Chapter 3

My fingertips fumbled on the doorknob as I attempted to open the door. My mother's scent wafted into the bathroom through the door. Just the smell of her made my stomach growl.  When I was about to twist the handle, a stinging sensation rushed over me. My eyes burned. I rubbed my eyes in attempt to get rid of the irritation.

"I'm fine mom! Just sick!" I yelled as I blindly turned on the sink faucet once again. My hands cupped the running water and wiped them across my face. "J-just give me some space!" It sounded more aggressive than I wanted, but I couldn't care at the time. This piercing pain was too much to bare. Mom's footsteps indicated that she accepted my excuse. As soon as her footsteps became fainter and more distant, the pain in my eyes became more bearable until there was no pain at all. The hunger in my stomach also disappeared.

I was able to catch my breath. Turning the sink off I looked up into the mirror above the marble appliance. Steam from the hot water running fogged up the mirror. I pulled my cream colored sleeve down over my hand and wiped the muck from the glass. I started wiping from the bottom to the top.

Once my sleeve reached where my face would be in the reflection, everything felt off. My mouth, nose. I paused in shock and confusion when reaching my eyes. They were the same as the Monster's ruby red eyes from last night. My body shook as those almost florescent irises stared back at me. I blinked violently as if maybe a double take would help fix the situation. They were still there, the same hue as that man's.

'What did he do to me?' I thought as I investigated my new eye color. Even though the headaches and the hunger went away when mom left, these eyes stayed all the same. I scrambled my thoughts together. How could dark brown eyes switch to something so bright, so red? Just like his...

Instead of crying, I pulled myself together and searched the medicine cabinet in search for any colored contacts that I might have saved up. All were just my regular prescription, I threw them around until I found my last pair. The box read, "Emerald Green". Luckily they were still good and a really dark shade. I tore open the box and got them into my eyes as soon as possible. Looking in my reflection, I finally looked and felt normal today. The green contacts and the red of my eyes made a soft greenish-brown eye color. Almost like my normal, barely noticeable.

When I knew I was completely alone, I slowly opened the bathroom door and briskly walked across the hallway to my bedroom. I shut the door behind me and stood there thinking what could have happened to me. My cool, almost uncaring attitude towards the situation disappeared. I slid down my closed bedroom door and sat there while hugging my legs. Trying to hide my fear was just prolonged and now tears fell. I wiped the tears away once they started touching my lips.

Among all the sniffles and tears, I didn't hear my window open. It was until the scent of an unknown individual that made me realize I wasn't alone. My bedroom was on the second floor, so that person had to have climbed or found a ladder to get into my room. I looked up at the individual, surprised to see someone I knew. I looked down and started wiping the snot and tears off of my face.

"We have to talk." I got up when they said that, still leaning on the pearl white door. They sat on my queen sized bed. They crossed their arms as I did the same. "I know what happened to you." I instantly whipped my head towards their direction. Shock and fear went through my body like electricity. They used a hand to gesture to come sit with them. I used all of my courage to walk over and sit.

I gripped my checkered patterned sheets with my fists as a soothing gesture. "How do you know?" I shakily asked and I wiped the last bit of snot from my leaking nose. I was alone that night, how could they...unless they saw and didn't do anything. Confused and angry, I wanted until they answered my question.

"That guy, he's not the only monster in the world. I think it's time you knew..."
