5.2 - Why Music?

Where does music come from? Is music only found on earth? Is it only practiced by humans? Did music perhaps even exist before humans? Is music a kind of universal language? Is music not invented, but discovered? Or even remembered?

If you take a closer look at music, you will discover a principle. Music is vibration. However, like light without eyes, music without ears would also remain just vibration. With eyes and ears and an intact brain, these vibrations can be interpreted in the form of sounds and colors. They become a sensual experience. And then it's not just people who sing! Birds chirp, wolves howl... and planets sing too! Radio telescopes receive signals from planets that can be made audible. Is our solar system a humming musical ensemble?

Music is more than just rehearsing movement sequences. Making music in a group means social interaction on a non-verbal level. This includes reacting to little slip-ups and other problems. Delays, power cuts, rioting fans, stage equipment set on fire, escalating drug escapades...

Musical talent and understanding, as well as auditory intelligence, are talents and abilities that are all too often not seen in the context of the totality of human life. The ability to hear multiple voices at once and to comprehend what each of them is saying are skills that expand our minds and our understanding of the world.

Perhaps if all these skills and abilities came together, people would be able to listen to different opinions and understand different standpoints. Perhaps they would be more able to correctly assess their own place, their position in society and in history. Perhaps they would also be more able to see the similarities that exist between all people and not always just the differences.

Whenever someone makes music, they have to perform two important activities at the same time: You have to express yourself - otherwise you are not contributing to the musical experience - but you also have to listen to others.

The art of making music is to play and listen at the same time, with one benefiting from the other. This enrichment occurs on both an individual and a collective level: your own playing becomes more expressive by listening to others, and the effect of each individual voice is enhanced in harmony with the others. Music has something elemental about it, it is an expression. An expression of something ancient. Isn't it said somewhere that in the beginning there was a sound - the word - when the universe was created?

___

In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

___

That's probably why you can't do without it. It is everywhere, since the beginning of time; it is, so to speak, the oldest relic in the universe, which we can enjoy anew every day.
