Chapter 84: The Heart of the Megamycete
Y/N POV
The Duke's carriage rolled away, I soon lost sight of it as it disappeared off into the distance in the direction of what was once Heisenberg's factory. I wondered whether he was telling me about Ethan was true. Could he really be alive? After what Miranda had done?
I sighed, those answers would have to wait. For now, my attention shifted right to the giant Mold structure right next to me. It was clear, that my next point of interest would be inside here. Before doing that though I pulled out one of the first aid bottles I bought.
Taking the cap off, I began applying the healing substance to the large wound on my leg. I let out a hiss at the burning feeling of the alcohol on the wound. Of course by now I knew it was more than worth it in the long run.
The wound healed itself, but only externally. The damage to the bone seemed to be permanent or at least, would have to heal naturally. For now though, I'd still be limping. Once the healing was sorted I placed the empty bottle away and turned my attention back to the structure. I reached out and touched the surface.
The mere feeling of the black Mold made me cringe, thinking back to the Baker estate. I continued to feel along the wall of the structure for a moment until I suddenly felt a part of the wall which was much weaker, almost squishy in comparison to the rest of it.
I pushed on the surface for a moment and too my surprise, my hand began to squish through. A secret entrance of sorts it seems. I grimaced and continued to step towards the more fragile area in the Mold.
The more I stepped closer into it, the more my body slowly was sunken into the thick black substance. I continued to pass through until I reached what seemed to be the other end. I staggered out as my movements become easier again, I just about managed to regain my footing before turning to see my new surroundings.
Yeah, I was definitely inside the structure now, the Mold surrounding me was proof enough of that. From here I had no idea where Miranda was so I guess from here it was just a matter of wandering.
I drew my magnum and began to step forward, I had a bad feeling about this. Miranda was in the final stages of her plan, she could throw anything at me at this point, I had to be prepared for the worst, even if I had restocked my supply with the Duke earlier.
The Mold beneath me let out a slight squelching noise as I stepped deeper down the tunnel. My eyes darted around at my surroundings. I was too focused on the path ahead though that I didn't notice what was beneath me.
As my foot stepped out, I found nothing underneath me! The next thing I knew, I'd slipped down some sort of Mold chute. It was a short drop that curved around into a slide. Around me was pitch darkness so I didn't know where I was going.
The slide soon came to a stop and abruptly deposited me out into what seemed like a large open room. The only light source came from a circular hole in the ceiling which allowed what light was present outside to shine through.
There was only one path outside of the room. I was heading towards it when there was a loud banging sound somewhere within the structure. Almost like an explosion. The ground shook beneath me. Whatever had caused the explosion must have been something powerful!
I just about managed to regain my footing, it was particularly hard with the pain in my leg still aching. Once I was stable though, I resumed heading towards the tunnel I'd initially planned to go down, it seems that was also where the explosion had come from.
Shortly after this, I was jumped by three Lycan. By this point though, they were no trouble. I swapped to my handgun and opened fire, quickly taking down Lycans one by one in quick succession. By now I'd grown more than familiar with how Lycans fought. Suffice it to say, the first two went down no problem.
I dodged before shooting, effectively taking down the last Lycan. As its body hit the ground though, there was another loud explosion causing the surface beneath me to shake. This time though, I found it easier to keep stable.
As soon as the shaking stopped, I knew I had to find its source. Just on the chance it had something to do with Miranda and the ceremony. I did my best to run, my leg still aching leaving me with a limp. However I was going faster now, that was something.
I soon reached one corridor in particular leading to what seemed to be an open room. As I walked down it, the light at the end faded for a moment, everything went dark before there was one last explosion!
This one I could actually see at the end of the corridor, I didn't focus on it too much as I still was struggling to keep my footing. Upon doing so I moved as fast as I could to reach the end of the tunnel, what I found caused me to freeze.
On the floor, surrounded by a large blast mark, I saw the remains of what seemed to be that Urias creature crumbled bits of its body gave that away. Standing just in front of said remains was Chris, gun at his side as he stood catching his breath.
I heard him speak into his communicator "I'll keep going, the rest of you, stay above ground." I assumed he was talking to his men. I chose now to make my presence known, sliding down the sloped rock surface carefully until I landed behind him.
Chris spun around instantly pointing his handgun in my direction, when he realised it was me though, he sighed "Y/N, I thought you were dead." I shrugged "Apparently not. What's going on here? I could here helicopters outside, finally brought in the BSAA I see?"
My statement made Chris shake his head "No, me and my team left the BSAA following the Louisiana incident." This caused my eyes to widen, I simply asked "I'm sorry what?" Chris began explaining.
"Yeah, we left when they insisted on covering up the whole incident. Seems they've even got worse now. They released a tonne of bioweapons of their own into the village to combat Miranda. I just hope to destroy the Megamycete and stop Miranda before they do."
I stared at him for a moment "So, the BSAA are corrupt now?" Chris responded "Yes, and it likely has something to do with Umbrella's influence. I know you've worked for them for the last few years, did they make you do anything that seemed off-putting?"
I shook my head "No, they just funded my research into the Mold." From that Chris actually concluded "Then they probably used your notes to create these bioweapons. Damn it, shouldn't have trusted them!"
That's when Chris' communicator went off, a voice could be heard asking "Sir? Who's that?" Chris calmly responded "Relax. It's just Y/N, continuing with the objective now." I spoke up "I'm coming with you then. I'll provide cover fire if you need it. I swear, Miranda will PAY for what she did!"
Chris just sighed at my request, no, DEMAND. "Fine, I'm done arguing at this point. Let's go." From that room I just followed behind Chris, we entered into another tunnel, this one pitch dark. I still had the torch from when me and Ethan arrived in the village so I turned that on.
As we walked Chris' team could be heard talking. One asked "So if Miranda was the fake Mia, where's the real one?" Another replied "I doubt she saw any further use for her. I don't get any of this. How did Miranda even know Rose exists?" A third voice commented "A Moldy little bird told her?"
Chris interjected "We can figure that out later. Focus on the plan." Ahead of us we saw a light at the end of the tunnel. We both headed towards it, the opening lead into a large room surrounding something that made my eyes widen even more than before.
A giant beating heart, connected to the strings of Mold. Chris stated "I found it, the Megamycete." I commented "It's huge." For a moment we just stared at it in wonder before Chris spoke into his communicator again "Alpha to squad. We've located the Megamycete."
(The image at the top shows the Megamycete.)
One of the soldiers could be heard responding "So now we can end this mess after all." Chris said "And about damn time." That's when he pulled something off his belt. He armed it revealing it to be some kind of explosive, a blinking red light appeared at the top.
He threw the explosive causing it to become lodged in the giant red heart. As it stuck I asked "What were they?" Chris held up a detonator and explained "N2 Explosives armed. There's enough there to blow the whole village sky high."
One soldier suggested "Then let's get out of here and blow the damn place." Chris firmly responded "No, not before I end Miranda. I'm not taking any more chances, I'm going in." I smirked before saying.
"It's time to finally put an end to this..."
Author's Note: And that's it for this chapter, at most there will be five or six more before the book either ends or goes on hold. I do hope you enjoyed it and as always, thank you for reading.
