Chapter 82: You Cannot Prevent the Inevitable
Donna POV
I had moved one of my chairs near to one of the windows and just sat. While my view of the village was blocked by the rock valley isolating me from the world, I could still see just beyond the fog, far off in the distance, Heisenberg's factory. Normally I wouldn't pay it any attention. However when it suddenly exploded into flames, my attention was piqued and I'd just sat in the window, watching the glow of the fire through the mist and now-dark night sky.
Y/N and Ethan must have done it. It had taken hours, but I assume they'd somehow managed to get around both Moreau and Heisenberg as well. Based off the explosion, it seems Heisenberg had put up quite the fight, I just hope Y/N had made it.
I still didn't understand why I cared for Y/N so much. Perhaps the fact he'd shown me mercy. Mercy I'm unsure if I actually deserved. And yet he showed it anyway. If all went well, he would have all flasks by now and it was clear, once they had the child back, they would be gone.
I thought about Y/N's offer. I'd never once considered leaving this village. What was there out there? What life could I live if I left this place? Was it worth it? There were so many questions, I didn't even know if an opportunity like this would come up again.
A knock on the door had snapped me from my thoughts, I tensed up. Only three people had ever come out here in all my time living here. Ethan Winters, Y/N and Mother Miranda. With caution, I stood up from the chair, descended the stairs and approached the double wooden doors.
As I swung them open, I heard a voice that caused me to freeze up. "Hello Donna, it's been a while since I last paid you a visit hasn't it?" Before I could respond or have Angie do it for me, she stepped into my house as the doors slammed shut again behind her.
Timeskip...
Y/N POV
My head felt especially heavy, even more-so than when I'd been knocked unconscious in the past. I knew it had something to do with Miranda. The last thing I remembered was being surrounded in a cocoon of black feathers after she-, she-.
I gasped out "Ethan!" As my eyes shot open. She'd killed him, quite literally RIPPED HIS HEART OUT! Without a second thought or a moments hesitation! That bitch! First Mia, then Ethan. She was going to PAY! Once I'd found out where I was.
The first sight I got when my eyes opened was of a familiar ceiling. Slowly sitting up, I was surprised when I found myself sitting on the floor in the living area of House Beneviento. The room that had all the dolls in it just off the entrance hall.
I didn't have time to collect my thoughts, figure out how I'd wound up here when I heard a voice that made my anger go through the roof. It held that same cold authoritative tone, as if she was talking to a child. "Good, I was beginning to wonder if you'd ever wake up.
Turning around to the voice's source, my anger briefly turned to shock when in fact Miranda was stood where the circular table in the centre of the room had once been. In front of her, sat on the only remaining chair from said table was Donna, her expression was unknown due to the veil covering her face. Angie was completely motionless on her lap, as you'd expect from a doll.
I snapped "Step away from her Miranda!" Miranda just glared down at me, not a hint of anything else as she said "All in good time. For now though, I believe with Ethan Winters gone, we can finally have our long awaited discussion.
My eyes narrowed, my brief shock being replaced once more by anger as I snapped out "What is it?! What the hell do you want?!" My tone was impatient and angry. I didn't really care what this was about, I just wanted the closure. Why Dimitrescu and Moreau didn't just kill me when they both had the chance.
Miranda's expression shifted a bit, her emotionless face gained a small grin. She stepped closer towards me, Donna still didn't move. Miranda went on to begin a speech, just like she did before, this one though was aimed directly at me.
"Y/N L/N, you've certainly been a topic of curiosity for me as of late." I raised an eyebrow, asking. "And why is that?" Miranda's grin only grew from there as her explanation began. "You were one of the scientists that were responsible for Eveline and along with your sister Mia became the only two to survive, but not after suffering such a horrible fate by her hands. Am I right?"
I didn't really have a response, Miranda didn't seem to care though and instead continued "After that you made a promise, to never let the Mold cause any harm ever again. You began research into a cure to it and remain so to this day."
I questioned angrily "So what if I did?" Miranda continued to walk forward until she was right in front of me. "I could have cared less about your work when I first took Mia's place, I cared only for getting Rose. However when you told me how this had come along. And, I knew there may be something more of worth."
I tried explaining "I haven't come far at all. There is little more than a few notes. It won't-." I was cut off by Miranda saying "And that's what I want. I told you before that the Mold originated from the Megamycete." I continued to stare at her "And?!"
Miranda breathed in for a moment, before finally making her statement. "I want you to tell me EVERYTHING you know of the Mold, and your full cooperation and assistance with the ceremony!"
Now there was silence between us, I just stared up at the witch for a moment. At first my reaction was the same as before. However then I smirked and burst out into a fit of laughter. I did this for a minute before asking sarcastically "Is that your attempt at humour or am I going deaf?"
When Miranda remained silent, staring down at me judgementally. I continued to laugh, each one laced with venom before I spat at her literally and snapping "You expect me to cooperate with you?! After everything?! You killed Mia, stole her identity, stole Rose, mutilating her and trapping her in those flasks! You killed Ethan! And that doesn't even include the suffering you inflicted upon the Lords and the residents of this village! After all that, you expect me to help you?! What a JOKE!"
Miranda's face hardened even more-so than before. She stepped back before turning to face away from me. She walked back in the direction of the still-silent Donna who just watched all this unfold with an unknown expression. Miranda then delivered a piece of news which caught me off guard.
"What if I was to tell you your oh-so-precious sister is still alive?" I stared up at her exclaiming "WHAT?! DON'T LIE TO ME YOU BITCH!" Miranda grinned yet again "I have your attention now then. That's good."
She went on to explain "Yes, Mia Winters is alive. Even as I impersonated her, I still had need of a lab rat. While not like Ethan, your sister and yourself are both very special. It seems, while Eveline's influence over you both was in fact severed, the Mold itself remained within you both. You may have noticed how you heal from injuries much quicker no?"
I will admit, the revelation shocked me, I'd thought the Mold had been purged when Ethan cured us with the serum. My main focus though, was still on Mia, if she was alive, I had no idea where she was.
"MIA!" I snapped "Where is she?! What have you done with her?!" This time it was Miranda's turn to laugh as she retorted "I've kept her in my personal laboratory. I had planned to take you as well, however I got all I needed to know from your sister. For your support, I will hand her over to you, only if you behave yourself."
This actually made me falter for a moment, if I helped Miranda, she'd let Mia go? No, there was no reason for me to trust this harpy of a woman! Even so, there's no way Mia would forgive me if I allowed Miranda to sacrifice Rose. My answer was clear.
Almost straight away, I replied bluntly "I don't trust you! And don't have a reason to. There's no way I'd help you, not with Rose on the line. I'll find Mia, rescue Rose, mark my words!" That's when for the first time since I woke up, Donna actually spoke. It wasn't much however I heard her whisper "Y/N..."
This sent Miranda into a tirade, she turned to Donna snapping "Be silent you useless waste of life! I'll deal with you later!" Miranda once again turned back to me, saying "I had a feeling you'd say that. Which is why I brought you here."
She looked around "I haven't forgotten how you openly defied my plan. I had specifically hidden each flask with the Lords. It was very specifically designed this way, not only to test you and Ethan, but to eliminate the loose end of my four 'false children'."
Shooting a glare at Donna, she spat "And yet, what do I find? That you allowed one of them to live! A worthless doll, based on nothing more that pathetic mercy! The Cadou within her remains, yet she is of no further use to me." Looking at me she finished "As such, your refusal to aid me leaves two loose ends, I'll start with you."
After that everything froze. I didn't comprehend what had happened until it was too late. Miranda raised her hand in my direction and something launched itself out. I thought that was the end, but something unexpected happened.
Donna leapt from her chair, diving in front of whatever Miranda had launched as if she was trying to protect me! Causing it to hit her square in the face! Blood sprayed briefly in all directions as she hit the wooden floor! The projectile still hit me, striking my leg. An excruciating pain shot through me as I fell down myself, unable to not cry out!
Miranda stood over us both as she explained "Even your supposed healing won't help you now Y/N, soon you'll bleed out, I am certain I struck a vein AND an artery. Now, I must be going, the ceremony awaits. But fear not, your niece's fate will help reconnect me with my own daughter, that should be enough for you."
With that, no more words were spoken by her, she turned and departed the room. I could do nothing to pursue, my leg was in agony. I did my best to ignore it as I heard the door to House Beneviento slam shut.
Instead of trying to follow, I did my best to shuffle over to Donna, I knelt by her side and scooped her up. Doing so, caused her veil to fall to the side a bit, revealing the large bloody gash running down her face.
I tried speaking "Donna, Donna! Hang in there." She was letting out shaky breaths however her eye slowly opened to stare at me. She didn't say anything at first, instead just staring up at me. After a moment she weakly rasped "Y-Y/N. I-it hurts..."
I reassured "I know, I know, but I'll find medical support, just hold on." Donna didn't respond though, instead she just stared at the ceiling. Her skin turned even whiter than usual, followed by her clothing, her body calcified and just like the other lords before her, she crumbled to nothing in my arms!
I remained motionless for a moment, in shock at what had happened. I thought of what Heisenberg had said. I'd bought Donna mere hours, nothing more. She'd still died, and it was all thanks to that bitch MIRANDA! Funnily enough, if I'd just agreed to help Heisenberg, I'm almost certain this whole ordeal wouldn't have happened, Ethan would still be alive, as would Donna!
If Mia was alive though, I knew what I had to do now. I would find her, get Rose back and get out of here ALONE if I had to! My attention shifted to Angie, now with no life left in it. I picked the doll up and held it as if I was holding a child. Making one last promise.
"I couldn't help you, I'm sorry. But Miranda will PAY! I'll make sure of it Donna..."
Author's Note: And that's it for this chapter. I had intended for it to be a sad one. However I'm not sure of I was able to make it so. Believe it or not, this was always my intention when I had Y/N spare Donna in the first place, I was just anxious to actually try it. We shouldn't be too far from the end if I don't put the book on hold at the end of this segment to wait for the DLC, I'm still unsure if I want to include that, we'll have to see. Anyway, I really hope you enjoyed the chapter and as always, thank you for reading.
