Chapter 69: The Final Lord Speaks, Exploring the Factory
Y/N POV
I managed to squeeze myself through the narrow vent. I had no idea where I was going to end up, what mattered now was getting as far away from whatever that thing was as possible. Seems I'd soon accomplished this because the sound propellers began to grow quieter the further I went before eventually ceasing completely.
Even so, I continued to and crawl through the passage. My mind was racing in the process. What the hell were those things?! I knew Heisenberg had likely created them, but how? Was this what the factory was built for?
I continued to think about what Heisenberg had said when we first met him, 'I could have fitted you with some great modifications at my factory'. I also thought about what the Duke had said regarding Heisenberg when he was explaining the four lords.
'He works in his factory on the village outskirts. And the project? Let's just say parts of the human imagination are better left alone.' I was beginning to see what he meant by that now.
After a while of climbing and crawling through the vents, I reached what appeared to be another grid, attached to the ceiling of a room. I glimpsed through the narrow slots to try and see what I was getting myself into, however all I saw was the floor.
It was worth a go, I began to push at the vent, eventually getting it to budge before it fell to the ground, hitting the floor with a loud clang. I froze for a moment, hoping the noise wouldn't attract any creatures, but no one came.
I honestly felt like someone from one of those spy movies I'd watched. Slowly but surely, I slipped my legs through the hole in the ceiling, dropping down into the room below. I looked around however there wasn't much in here, a few generators off to the side and a table opposite with a chair and some ammo on it.
Taking the ammo, that was all of value here. My attention turned to the door however before I could even take a step, I was suddenly startled when a voice echoed throughout the room. A voice I recognized all too well and made me freeze up.
"Well well, I was wondering when you'd finally resurface. I should have known Moreau wouldn't be enough to exterminate you." HEISENBERG! I swiftly drew my magnum again and looked around, hoping to spot him however he was nowhere.
His voice could be heard again. "Relax, don't you know what speakers are? I'm not actually there." I sighed with relief before he asked "So, how are you liking my factory?" I growled out "I've already met some of your little playthings."
Heisenberg laughed loudly through a speaker which I now noticed was mounted on one of the walls. "Oh, sorry about them." There was a pause for a moment before I snapped "Tell me where the flask is!"
A tutting sound could be heard before Heisenberg replied in a calm voice "Now, you see Y/N. That's not how this works. You know that right? I'll tell you what, I'd like to have a word with you, explain something important. I'll send my location to that little communicator you have."
My eyes widened "Wait wha-?" He cut me off "I know how you got here, it's a pity that damned 'BSAA' have been elusive enough. I don't know where they are." I paused for a moment, thinking about what he was saying before I finally came to a conclusion.
"Okay Heisenberg, I'll play your little game. Send your location to me, I'll be there as soon as I can." Heisenberg spoke in a quiet, almost eerie tone. "I'll be waiting for you, oh, and mind my toys on your way up here, as you know, they can be quite friendly."
There was a screech as Heisenberg's audio presumably turned off. I stood for a moment before my communicator began beeping. Looking at it, I saw it wasn't someone trying to contact me, but rather it appeared to be a mini map, giving a bird's-eye view of what I believed was the factory.
One area in particular had a small beeping blinking light, I assumed that was where Heisenberg wanted to meet. I didn't trust him, not in the slightest. However if I was to figure out what he knew and where the flask was, it seems I'd have to play by his rules for now.
I was particularly interested for this meeting. If meeting Donna and Moreau had taught me anything, it was that people often aren't as they seem. During that initial meeting with the four lords, I'd developed negative opinions of them. However since then, those opinions had been tested.
Dimitrescu was just as I'd expected, cruel, ruthless. And yet even she held a great deal of care for her daughters which was admirable to an extent. Donna on the other hand, was different. At first I'd arguably hated her MORE than Dimitrescu initially, after she'd messed with my mind, showing me twisted versions of Mia and Zoe.
However upon cornering her and seeing what she was really like, the hate disappeared and I'd developed a sense of pity and even understood her angle to an extent. That's why I allowed her to live, give her a second chance to live.
I wanted to give Moreau that same chance, I really did. Much like Donna he seemed like a lost child in need of affection. But after our encounter in the mines, it became apparent he couldn't be convinced. There was no way around him but to fight. What would Heisenberg be like? We would just have to see.
My attention shifted to the only door leading out of the room. Being metal with a bright light in the centre. I instantly went and pushed it open. I found another seemingly meaningless corridor, I followed it along, according to the coordinates, I was going the right way. It wasn't until I came across a door at the end which I opened, did my shock become apparent.
The door lead to a narrow walkway overlooking a giant room. Various tools and conveyor belts were all over the place, hauling chunks of metal and cybernetics from one place to the other. Looking closer, I noticed some of them appeared to be the bodies similar to those creatures I'd encountered earlier. This must have been how they were made.
I stood overlooking the factory, asking myself, "What, is he making an army or something?" I sighed before turning to look down the walkway, I followed it along reaching another door, pushing that open I found myself once again on a corridor where I got confronted a second time by one of those cybernetic monsters!
Luckily, this one was like the first one I'd encountered, looking mostly human with the metal drill arm. As soon as it noticed me, it lunged forward in an effort to attack, however this time I was much less caught off guard by it.
I already spotted its glowing chest-piece on it that I'd figured was its weak point. As it approached, I used my rifle to aim directly for the chest. The first shot hit right where I wanted it to, causing the creature to stagger back a bit.
The second was less fortunate, as was the third. The creature just raised its drill arm and managed to block the shots. I shifted my rifle to aim at the creature's head, instead aiming there. That shot managed to make the creature stagger and free up its chest plate allowing me to fire two more shots to knock it back and a third to take it down for good.
I just walked right past it for now and it was at the end of the corridor I found a lift, going inside I found there was no floors below this one so I pressed the button to head up instead. The ride was quiet however when I reached the top and the shutters opened, there was a shaking feeling, I noticed sparks building up on the control panel.
I just about had time to leap out as the lift rapidly cascaded back down the shaft. Had I still been in it, I would likely have died when it hit the bottom and burst into flames. I peered down at it and muttered "Crap, what the hell happened?"
As soon as I regained my composure, I stood back up and looked around. All that remained was another corridor leading to a door. According to the marker Heisenberg claimed he provided, he was waiting just beyond this room.
I slowly approached, not drawing my weapon, but still remaining on edge in case anything was to happen. I approached the door and didn't hesitate to open it. What I found was confusing to say the least.
There was no sign of Heisenberg himself, the room was very much cluttered. My attention was drawn to a curtain on the far side, the beacon itself was coming from behind it. I walked over to the curtain before cautiously pulling it aside. What was behind it made me freeze completely in both confusion and possible fear.
Before I could fully comprehend what I'd found, that voice could be heard behind me, asking in an ominous, almost unusually quiet tone.
"So, do you understand what's happening here yet?"
Author's Note: And that's it for this chapter, the next one should be interesting because we'll finally see Y/N and Heisenberg interact properly. I really hope you liked this chapter and as always, thank you for reading.
