Chapter 64: Escaping the Cave, The Return of Chris

Y/N POV

The sound of Lycans could be heard all around me as I ran through the tunnels, across a few wooden walkways. Occasionally I would turn back and shoot at my pursuers however there were too many of me to face alone.

Perhaps if Ethan was here with the shotgun and grenade launcher, that would work wonders here. Unfortunately, this was not the case. My handgun managed take down a few of them, but aside from that, I was completely on the run here.

I climbed a ladder onto another wooden walkway and just kept running. After a while I came across a wooden gate leading into yet another hidden structure. Previously, I'd just ran straight through it without a second thought, however this time, I stopped and closed it behind me, there was an unlocked latch on this end so I managed to pull it locked.

That wouldn't hold the Lycans for long, however it did buy me some time. I began looking around the small cabin for anything I could use. And that's when I noticed something of interest. Several ammo cases placed on one of the nearby tables.

These cases looked different to any which I'd seen before, next to them was a chest that had a metal chain wrapped around it, held in place with a lock. I could hear the Lycans pounding at the door so I knew I had to be quick.

Raising my handgun I blasted the lock off and opened the chest. What I found inside caused my eyes to widen and a grin to spread across my face. Inside the chest was a REVOLVER! Black with gold patterns on it.

(Originally I was planning for Y/N to get this at the same point Ethan would normally get one in-game. But I realized that may not fit with the idea I'm considering for that part of the book.)

I lifted the magnum revolver out of the container and spun the barrel. I obviously had to take the gun. And it's a good thing I did, because while I was inspecting it, the door finally gave way, revealing the horde of Lycans that had managed to follow me this far.

I instinctively raised my newfound weapon and opened fire. Already, I was treated with results! I didn't even land a headshot but I still managed to demolish THREE of them with a single bullet! My grin got wider as I muttered "Oh, you'll do nicely."

I pocketed the gun as well as the ammo on the table and continued running. I left the remaining Lycans to pursue, I didn't  want to waste precious ammo on them. I soon reached that crossroads once again, where we had split up the first time, this time though, I went the same route Ethan had.

It was just a matter of continuing running now as I navigated through the tunnels and across the wooden walkways. I climbed up a metal ladder, turning back with my new magnum and firing it to take down a few more Lycans before continuing.

And it seemed Ethan had been the lucky one, because after running and evading those Lycans for about five more minutes or so, I finally saw light ahead. Going in that direction, the cave network lead out onto a snowy footpath. I had made it!

From there, I followed the footpath, I could hear what sounded like gunfire up ahead and after a brief walk, I came to what seemed to be a boathouse of sorts. A small wooden shack with a narrow jetty sticking out into the water.

The building was currently occupied by about four or five Lycans. That in itself wasn't surprising, what was though was who they were surrounding. It seemed Ethan hadn't managed to get that much further ahead of me.

He was sat in a boat, fending off the Lycans with his shotgun. I wasted no time joining in. I revealed my rifle and looked down the scope, aiming towards one of the Lycan's heads before I opened fire.

The bullet shot out and hit the creature, causing it to fall from the roof. This action earned the attention of both the Lycans and Ethan, the latter of which exclaimed "Y/N!" The Lycans just roared and began trying to approach.

They didn't get that far though, I swapped to my handgun and continued to shoot each Lycan down. From the boat, Ethan did the exact same and because of that, it didn't take long for all the Lycans in the area to be cleared out.

I stepped towards Ethan who instantly asked "Where the hell were you? I got here about twenty minutes ago!" I shrugged before replying "I had another little run-in with this place's resident Lord and a group of angry Lycans, cut me a break."

Ethan commented "It's a good thing I found the key for this boat then. Lets go already. We still need to get out of here." We both climbed into the boat, Ethan placed the key in the engine and with a roar, off we went.

The boat slowly set off out into the reservoir. We went through a small cave-like passage. As we came out of that, we were met with a large dam, more than likely what was holding all this water in place. As we were coming past the dam though, that's when a huge fish emerged from the water!

It briefly emerged, causing a splash of water before submerging itself once again. The boat rocked lightly as Ethan asked, clearly scared "What was that?!" I leaned forward, saying "I'm not sure. But we'd best keep moving before it comes back."

We continued to sail through the reservoir until I noticed a cave up ahead with what seemed to be another jetty sticking out of it. Pointing, I said "There." Ethan nodded, saying "Looks good to me."

We aligned the boat with the jetty and pulled up. As the boat came to a stop, we both disembarked onto the wooden walkway. I wondered at first why this place was hidden away however I soon got my answer when at the end was a tent, connected to a wooden structure.

When the flap was moved though, I was extremely surprised when we found quite an advanced set-up. It was apparent that someone had been here recently, metal containers were dotted about. With various appliances such as microscopes arranged as if they'd been used.

Ethan muttered out "What the hell? A research post or something? What the fuck are they doing here?" We continued to inspect the items and that's when I noticed something. My attention was drawn to one container in particular which had an all too familiar logo.

UMBRELLA!

Suddenly, I heard Ethan let out a grunt behind me. Spinning around, I saw him caught in a headlock by a soldier clearly wearing the BSAA's gear! He managed to throw the attacker to the ground only to get into a wrestle with them, with Ethan yelling "Get off me!"

The soldier yelled "Stay down!" I raised my handgun however another soldier emerged from the shadows pointing another at my head saying "Stand down doctor L/N." And that's when an all too familiar voice said "Ethan, Y/N."

Turning around to its source, my eyes widened when we saw CHRIS stood leaning against the wall. He continued "I gotta say. I'm surprised you both made it this far. Even you Y/N. It'd be a shame if something happened to either of you now."

I felt anger fill me but I managed to remain calm, instead coldly asking "Chris, what's going on? What are you doing here?" Before he could answer though, Ethan snapped "Sure Chris, why not? You killed Mia! Now do us and finish the job!"

I was about to raise my gun again however the soldier still holding me at gunpoint warned "Don't even think about it doctor." Chris slowly began to approach us both when a third soldier entered the room, saying "Hey cap. I'm getting some serious motion readings out there, we should move on."

Chris' attention shifted to the soldier asking "What kind of readings? What's moving?" The soldier replied "Unknown, but my guess is we've been here too long and Miranda knows it."

At the mention of Miranda, Ethan blurted out "Hey, hey! Did you say Miranda? How are you involved?!" Chris pointed and snapped "Leave it alone Ethan you and Y/N are out of your depths!"

He turned back to the soldier "What about the sample analysis?" That's when the soldier said something that caused my eyes to widen. "It's definitely related to the Mold." That's when I stated "I thought so."

This caught the attention of Chris who simply asked "What?" I explained "I've noted several similarities between the creatures here and the Mold already. But I haven't come across a known connection yet."

Once I'd said that, a growling could be heard outside, Chris and the soldier both approached the open door facing the reservoir. I could see that large fish again, swimming outside before it abruptly turned and headed in our direction!

Chris said "You stay out of our business, Ethan. Y/N, if you have anything that could contribute, tell me!" Ethan asked "What business-?" However he was cut off when Chris abruptly yelled "Watch out!"

He pushed us out of the way just as the giant fish crashed right into the structure, destroying it completely! We managed to avoid that however soon the wooden planks beneath us broke away as well!

Causing us both to fall into the cold waters of the reservoir...

Author's Note: And that's it for this chapter, originally it was going to be uploaded yesterday, but I was too tired to finish it. I really hope you liked it and as always, thank you for reading.
