Chapter 63: Reasoning with a Mutant, or Trying to...

Y/N POV

I continued to breath lightly to myself as I walked further down the damp tunnel. We'd only had a small taste of Moreau's abilities so far with him seemingly controlling that strange slime-like stuff. There was no-telling what else he was capable of.

Little did I know, while me and Ethan had split up for now, we'd be reuniting soon enough. He would be the one to find the exit to this cave along with something else. I'd find all these at a later time myself, but for now, there was something else that unknowingly would get my attention.

By this point, the tunnels and mineshafts were becoming a bit repetitive. I didn't even know what these mines were used for or why they'd been seemingly abandoned. But all that mattered now was to find a way out, regroup with Ethan and get out of here with the flask.

The tunnel I was following soon reached yet another clearing where just like before with Ethan, I was ambushed by a band of Lycans. This one was much smaller mind-you however unlike before, I had no cover either.

Even so, I resorted to my handgun, that being the gun I had the most ammo for. Doing my best with what I had, I ducked back into the tunnel I'd just come through, using that as my best source of cover.

I would occasionally lean out and shoot. Of course, aiming directly for each Lycan's head before I shot. Each round hit its mark and one by one the Lycans fell. I briefly had to reload before I could continue and eventually clear my path.

As soon as the Lycans were out of the picture, I was free to continue on into the tunnels. I found what appeared to be a wooden hut however I didn't bother searching it so I ran right through. I was yet to come across a dead end, perhaps I had found the way out after all? Or maybe there was no dead end. Maybe both mine and Ethan's paths lead somewhere.

Sure enough, this theory was proven right shortly after. As the tunnel continued on and I followed its course. I soon came across what appeared to be yet another small wooden shack. This one though was tucked away out of sight.

Something about this made me cautious so I raised my handgun once again just to be safe as I approached the door to the shack and slowly opened it. A loud creak filled my ears as the door swung open and then closed behind me once I'd stepped through.

The entire room was in complete darkness with the exception of a lone lantern right in the centre. I couldn't quite make out my surroundings. I did my best though to feel at the surrounding area and that's when I heard a laugh.

"Huh, huh, huh." The laugh sounded both kind of funny but also discomforting. I was startled even more when I turned back around to the source of the laughter to see the face of MOREAU illuminated by the lantern. A grin spread across his face.

The light in the shack turned on at this point, still being dim due to said light only being a single bulb hanging from the ceiling by flimsy string. Even so, I could clearly see my surroundings as Moreau now stood directly opposite me.

He began walking forward, his webbed feet making slapping noises against the floor as he spoke. "It seems my little trap managed to catch someone. I hoped Winters would be the one who'd fall for it. Maybe I was wrong when I called you the smart one. Nevermind, this way it will be easier to bring you to Mother Miranda."

I chose to ask "And why does she want me so much?" Moreau stopped walking towards me before responding "She will not tell us. That is mother's to know and for me not to question. But when I bring you to her along with the flask, I can finally be her favourite."

Strangely, his head darted to the side so he was no longer looking in my direction, I heard him mutter. "If I fail, I will forever be a laughing stock to everyone, just like always. Damn Dimitrescu, Heisenberg, Beneviento! Stealing Mother's love from me!"

His eyes widened "But now, I finally have a chance to set things right." I won't lie. Hearing him say this reminded me of what Donna had told me, she seemed to think the same. Dimitrescu and Heisenberg were clearly the ones paid the most attention to by Miranda. Perhaps, if I played my cards right, I could give Moreau the same opportunity I gave Donna.

"So, you hope to earn her affections by keeping the flask safe and bringing me to her. Am I correct?" Moreau seemed to get giddy at that as he pointed at me "Yes! Yes! That's right. I will become Mother's favourite!"

Now was when I chose to bring it up. "You know, I've already visited House Beneviento, you aren't the only one who thought this. We already have the flask. This doesn't have to end in further bloodshed."

Moreau paused for a moment before a low laugh sounded from him. This started quiet at first, however it soon developed into a full on fit. Oddly enough, even though he was laughing, it sounded as if he was also in pain.

"Why should I believe you?! I know you've already got the head and legs flasks. What's to say you didn't kill Dimitrescu and Beneviento, take their flasks and are now lying to me to catch me off guard?"

I sighed, trying not to groan to myself. "Dimitrescu is dead sure. But that's because she forced our hand. Giving no other option. Donna however was given a chance. A chance to live a life outside of Miranda's grasp."

As soon as I said that, before I could even say anymore, Moreau snapped "Blasphemy! Mother Miranda has treated all of us with dignity! You spread such lies about her!" I raised a hand, saying "I never said anything about Mother Miranda. I merely offered Donna a chance to live. I offer the same to you."

I stepped closer and continued "Allow me and Ethan to leave with the flask, we'll get Heisenberg's flask then you'll never see us again." I didn't bother offering him leaving the village like I did Donna.

Moreau didn't even take a moment to THINK about it as he abruptly barked "NO! I will not betray Mother Miranda! I will bring both you and the flask to her! Then she'll respect me!" As soon as he'd finished his rant, a sound of growling could be heard in the distance, getting closer.

Before I knew it, the building was CRAWLING with Lycans! It seems they'd been drawn here by Moreau's little tantrum. For all I knew, it was possible he'd yelled on purpose just to lure them here. This idea was reinforced when Moreau began laughing.

I turned back to him and said "You know, it's a good thing I don't have the flask on me. You'll have to try a bit harder than that." Moreau just kept chuckling, not actually responding as more Lycans filled the room. And that's when I began running.

It was a relatively long backtrack, but even so, I knew I'd have to get back to that junction and follow the path Ethan did. It seemed Moreau was too loyal to Miranda for me to negotiate with him. It was inevitable he would emerge yet again as an opposition.

Until then though, I had to find Ethan so we could find a way to get out of here...

Author's Note: That's it for this chapter though. I found this really difficult to write and it drug on a lot, I did want to get it up this morning but now we're mid-way into the afternoon where I am. I really hope you enjoyed it though and as always, thank you for reading.
