Chapter 57: The Embodiment of One's Fears

Y/N POV

"Y/N... Help me..."

I froze completely in my tracks as the haunting voice echoed from the darkness down the corridor. I listened intently as the sound of ragged breathing and disjointed, uneven footsteps could be heard.

I tried reaching for my handgun, in an effort to defend myself from whatever was coming, however when my hand reached where it was initially holstered, I found NOTHING! I looked down and sure enough, it was gone, just like that. I reached around for my rifle however I found that was gone as well.

An angered look spread across my face as I muttered under my breath. "Damn it." I didn't know if my weapons were somehow stolen from my out of nowhere or whether this was all just a part of an illusion that had completely gripped my mind, however that was only the start of things to come.

The footsteps stopped, this caused me to instantly forget about my missing weapons and once again stare into the darkness. I heard nothing though, aside from my own light breaths. I tried to listen closely, in case I heard anything when-.

"GAAAAAAA!"

I couldn't help but yelp when the face of MIA appeared right in front of me, letting out an almost animalistic growl that caused me to step back. I got a look at what appeared to be my sister however I noticed one thing. Her face looked mangled, deformed. With large black eyes and odd wrinkles.

Even though, I knew this couldn't be Mia, it didn't stop me being caught off guard by her as she fumbled about. Suddenly, her head snapped in my direction. Black eyes staring directly at me as she muttered "Y/N..."

Slowly she began to step towards me, I could hear her snarling under her breath. I stepped back on instinct however 'Mia' just stepped forward. Despite clearly just being another illusion, I didn't want to stick around as she stepped closer.

I took off running down the corridor, the same way I'd initially come down, the only difference now was that it was extremely dark. I had to move my arms to feel at my surroundings for any walls. Behind me I heard Mia's voice once again calling out "Y/N... Help me..."

It was at this point I realized that whatever this hallucination was, it was only capable of looping that one phrase over and over. But what about the other phase I'd heard? Ever since I'd arrived here, I'd heard the same two phrases looped on repeat. That was one, the other was.

"Y/N... Why did you leave me?"

As if on cue, just as I'd thought of it. Another haunting voice echoed throughout the house, one I recognized straight away as that of Zoe! As I entered what I believed to be the entrance hall, again I couldn't clearly make-out as much as I could before due to how dark this illusion seemed to be.

If I wasn't mistaken, I was stood just near the top of the stairs, I could just about make them out in  front of me. My focus was soon drawn to the right of me though when I once again heard slow footsteps approaching.

As I dreaded, the figure  of Zoe emerged from the shadows, her face held the same complexion as Mia's. Emotionless black eyes, creases and wrinkles across her skin. She slowly staggered towards me, in an almost trance-like state before suddenly lunging forward!

I dodged out of the way, partially heading down the stairs to see Mia emerge from the corridor I'd come down. Now her and Zoe both stood at the top of the stairs, staring down at me. No words were spoken at that moment, instead they both began to take a step down the stairs.

I took no chances, turning and sprinting down the stairs. I attempted to head towards one of the doors when someone fell on me, pushing me to the ground! Apparently, Zoe had leapt over the stair rail, landed on top of me and was now attempting to violently claw or bite at me.

Trying to wrestle her off me, I snapped "Get the hell off me!" Her grasp was tough, however I finally managed to kick her off me. As Mia had finally made it down the stairs, I began running once again, Mia dived for me however she fell flat to the floor like a rag-doll before her body began contorting back into a standing upright position.

I tried my best to run through the house, eventually I came across a door leading to another corridor within the house. I could just about see the area around me as behind me, the voices could be heard. Again, those two phrases, repeated over and over and OVER! Drilled into my mind!

"Y/N... Help me..."

"Y/N... Why did you leave me..."

The phrased repeated both from the illusion's mouths but also in my mind, constantly looping themselves over and over. The voices slowly became more and more distorted each time, as I turned to face them, I began to see why.

At first it was minor, however I began to notice small growths begin to appear across both Mia and Zoe's bodies. These growths started small however they began to expand, their voices became more gravely as the growths began to get closer to their mouths.

They still maintained their humanoid shapes as they staggered towards me. Even if I did have my guns on me, I didn't know if I'd actually be able to do anything. Would I be able to shoot at Mia and Zoe? Even if they were illusions? Even if they were twisted versions of how I'd known them.

Instead of trying to fight them, I decided to use my the darkness to my advantage. I ran for a bit more before rushing into one of the doors. Luckily, I found myself in a room with a cupboard right next to the door. I quickly shut it behind me and pushed the cupboard in front of it, at least buying me some time.

It seemed to work, the distorted Mia and Zoe came to the door of the room and tried pounding on it, again repeating those phrases as they tried to push past the cupboard. I went up and did my best to brace it, pushing back against the door.

And then, in an instant, there was silence. Nothing. The banging stopped, as did the voices. Slowly but surely, the light in the room I was in began to flicker back on, just as it had been before.

I remained still for a moment, leaning against the cupboard before finally taking a deep breath and moved the wooden object out of the way before opening the door with a crack. I was still cautious that the illusions may still be there however as I looked around, they weren't.

In fact, it looked completely peaceful, just as it had been when we first arrived. The light had returned so I could now see the corridor more clearly. The illusions were now completely gone so I finally deemed it necessary to step out from the small room I'd been in and began backtracking back to the main hall.

After I'd arrived, I was about to make my way up the stairs when I noticed something once again emerge from the corridor, this time it wasn't the size of a full-human. As I drew closer, I recognized the figure instantly as my eyes narrowed in anger.

That damned DOLL! The one from the Lord's meeting, the one from the portrait! The doll stepped out of the corridor into the upper floor of the entrance hall and upon noticing me, it froze up, its expression remained blank, of course it would, it was a doll. Why would it react any different?

It did however suddenly shriek "YOU?!" Before abruptly turning and running down the corridor. I took off after it, going as fast as I could. The doll began cackling to itself taunting "HAHAHAHA! YOU CAN'T CATCH ME!"

I just snarled "You want to bet?" Before lunging forward, that's when things went from eerie, to just peculiar. I'd expected to tackle the doll to the ground, however my body instead collided with a seemingly invisible but clearly very much human.

Both of us collapsed to the ground in the process making them suddenly reveal themselves...
