Chapter 3: The Message and the Wreck
Y/N POV
Alan's hastily scrawled message provided us with all the information we would need. We wasted no time rushing to the staircase, shooting through another Molded in the process and as per Alan's directions, we headed up to the next floor, the path going any higher was closed off however we did find a door.
And it was on the other side of this door, heading through a small corridor that we found Alan once again, hunched over coughing. We both went over to him, Mia asking "How did you get here?" Alan looked up and asked as well "Where's Evie?"
I replied "She's out of control. Without the treatments she's deteriorating." Alan slowly stood up, still clutching his side in pain as he joked "Well it's a good thing I'm already dying." He began coughing even harder and fell forward, me and Mia caught him with her reassuring "Don't say that."
Alan looked at us both saying "She trusts you two. That little bitch, she never-." Suddenly he stopped, his eyes widened as he began exclaiming "No Evie, I- Evie- I didn't mean to call you that. Evie!"
Mia tried calming him down "She's trying to take control, you have to fight her!" Alan abruptly let out a bloodcurdling scream. Black splotched began appearing across his body. He fell to the ground vomiting black Mold all over the floor.
Mia ran over to Alan yelling "Eveline stop! Stop right now!" Alan through her back saying "No don't touch me!" He kept vomiting, collapsed onto his hands and knees before finally falling onto his front.
We were motionless for a moment staring at Alan's Mold-encrusted body, Mia dropped to her hands and knees when we heard light footsteps approaching. I spun around to see Eveline stood there with a grin on her face.
Image of Eveline:
Mold slowly began building up around her feet, extending outwards. Before either me or Mia could react the black substance completely enveloped us. Mia let out a scream as I just gasped a bit, after that there was darkness.
Timeskip...
I don't know how long we were out, the next thing I knew I woke up on the floor Mold littered all over the place. I snapped my head around when I heard Mia scream again. I saw her looking at her hands, black vein-like marks streaked across it.
My eyes widened when I looked at myself and saw the same markings. I staggered back a bit as the marks slowly disappeared. I began muttering "No, no, no. This can't be happening." Mia managed to calm herself before saying "Come on, we've got to get moving."
I nodded, slowly trying to regain my composure. I was trying hard not to hyperventilate now. We made our way into an office further down the corridor and here we found a computer. Mia ran over to it and instantly started booting it up.
I said "I'll stand watch, make sure we aren't taken by surprise." Mia frantically nodded and pressed a few keys, starting up a recording. In a stressed and sad tone, she sent out what we both believed would be her final message to her husband.
"Ethan, you were right. I did lie to you. I shouldn't have, but-" She paused for a moment closing her eyes before continuing "All I can say is that if you get this. Stay away! Forget that you ever knew me! Have a good life." And with that she signed off.
Tears flooded down her cheeks I gave her a sympathetic look and said "Mia, I'm sorry." She looked at me and gave a sad smile, replying "Don't apologise Y/N. This is what it's come to and there's no changing that."
I nodded and said "Eveline awaits." Mia sighed and said "Yeah. Lets go." We both loaded our submachine guns and exited through the other door. As soon as we entered this corridor Mold rapidly took over the walls, encasing them all in that black substance and as we rounded the corner we were met face-to-face with Eveline standing eerily in the darkness. Only occasionally being lit by the red light of the siren.
A Molded ran at us screaming before violently exploding. It was at this point that Eveline spoke in a quiet yet sinister tone "We'll be together forever." Out of nowhere there was a massive shockwave, the glass windows smashed and once again both me and Mia were knocked unconscious.
I was half-prepared to die that day as the tanker wound up wrecked in the swamps of Louisiana. However it seemed fate had other plans for me.
??? POV
Damn these hurricane winds. I was having trouble keeping upright in this state and with the amount of rain falling, my torch wasn't exact doing much to light the way for me. Still, I navigated through the swamps until I came across something which took me by surprise.
A giant tanker of some sort was beached in the marsh, judging by its appearance and lack of rust it must have only crashed hear recently most likely in the hurricane. But still, what was it doing all the way out here?
My thoughts were cut off when I noticed something else. A body lying face-down on the ground. Upon a closer look, I noticed it was a boy probably early twenties at best. I approached slowly not sure if he was alive asking "Hey, hey kid. You alright?"
Thankfully, he groaned faintly making me sigh in relief before I said "Now son, we can't just leave you out here. Come on, I'll bring you back to my house. We'll get you feelin' better soon."
I scooped the boy up into my arms and began taking him back to the house. As I was going I noticed another body, this one of a woman, a bit older than the boy. She seemed to be alive as well. I decided I'd have to come back for her once the boy was settled down.
I wouldn't just leave these people to die...
Author's Note: And that's it for this chapter. Now technically I'd say that's the prologue done. I hope you enjoyed the story so far. From here I think you know what's coming so I really hope you like that as well and as always, thank you for reading.
