Y/N POV

"Y/N?!" "Mia?!"

The two of us quickly embraced one another in a tight hug. We eventually pulled away from one another as Mia sighed in relief and said "You have no idea how glad I am to see you. I didn't know what happened to you after the boat capsized, I woke up and you were gone." I replied "Same to you. Where's Ethan?"

Mia's expression then turned from relief to fear as she answered "I don't know. I found him shortly after waking up but some of that black Mold carried him away. I thought he came in here but so far I've not found him."

Her fear remained as she said "There was a little girl, something familiar about her. She claimed I'd told her we'd be a family." My eyes widened as she explained this, I thought about the little girl I'd seen, the one I'd believed to be Eveline. If she had appeared to Mia as well, that would indicate she'd somehow managed to be in two different places at once!

I commented "That's concerning." Mia asked "How come?" I went on to explain "I saw a girl as well, in fact, I followed her here. She also mentioned you'd promised her something, when I asked her to explain she freaked out and ran off."

Mia's eyes widened as she muttered "Oh god... What's happening." I shook my head saying "I don't know. But I suppose the only way to find out would be to find this girl. She obviously knows something we don't. Perhaps it could explain why neither of us can remember what happened three years ago." To that Mia said "Okay, Lets go..

With that, we both continued on our way through the tanker. One thing I found interesting was that grass had begun growing out of some of the Mold on the ground. Even with my time at the Baker house I had no idea that Mold could grow in a place like this.

We continued walking past some shattered windows, outside it was still dark. We'd escaped the Baker house in the night so it still hadn't turned morning as of yet. As we made our way towards a door at the end of the corridor, we found our path cut off by another Molded which emerged from the grass beneath it.

I gestured to Mia and warned "Behind me! I'll deal with this." I raised my MPM Handgun and opened fire on the creature. Unfortunately, the two rounds I had left weren't enough to put the Molded down, it kept walking towards us and my handgun just clicked when I tried firing.

I stated "Damn! Out of ammo." I was about to use the last round in my 44 when Mia said "Wait, I found a box of handgun rounds before. Take them." I nodded saying a quick "Thank you." Before taking the box of bullets and reloading my weapon as quick as I could. 

The Molded was still approaching so as soon as I'd loaded in six new bullets, I resumed fire. Aiming directly for the Molded's head. Having already hit it twice already, two more shots were all I needed to take the creature out for good.

Our attention returned to the door at the end of the corridor, with that Molded out of the way we were free to head on through it, it was hear we were met with a stairwell heading upwards to the second floor. We ascended the first flight and arrived at a door, unfortunately it was locked so our only choice was to ascend the stairs yet again.

We were on the third floor now. And there was another door here as well. This one luckily for us, was unlocked so me being the one with the gun, I pushed it open and went in first. Walking onto this level, we went through a small corridor before arriving in a large square room. 

At the far end of the room was a television, switched on but playing static, in front of the TV was a chair. At first it seemed the chair was empty however as me and Mia entered the room, the chair slowly spun around to reveal the eerie girl who'd been appearing across the ship for both of us.

She just stared at us with an emotionless expression before saying "Watch it." She gestured towards the TV and an old VHS tape that was placed next to it. I remained silent, cautious of the supposed child as Mia asked in a confused voice "What? Why?"

The girl, who I'm assuming was Eveline, based off what the Bakers rambled on about, answered "You two need to remember! So we can be a family." We both approached the table with the television on it, the girl watching us the whole time. I picked up the VHS tape, it looked old and covered in Mold.

I held the tape up to the girl and asked "This?" She nodded, I pushed the tape into the VHS player. The static on the screen disappeared as despite its condition, the tape began playing displaying a message.

'Masv jh-15al Attd 

"Test subject E-001"

The tape began playing and at first I just watched in confusion, the tape seemed to be from Mia's point of view however glancing over at her, she seemed just as confused as I was. It seemed neither of us recognized what was happening in the tape. 

That soon changed as the tape progressed. I began to recognize certain things, a man named Alan Droney appeared at the start who I recognized. However the final turning point that triggered everything was when I showed up in the video!

Just like that things began flooding back, and it was just as I'd come to fear. I had become a scientist working with a group named the Connections. The girl behind us right now was in fact Eveline that the Bakers had talked so much about. Me and Mia were both on board this very tanker transporting Eveline when all hell broke loose.

The tape itself documented the tanker's final moments. Me and Mia desperately searching for Eveline. Alan died after he accidentally insulted her. In the end we eventually encountered Eveline in a corridor after that there was a massive shockwave, shattering windows around us and the tape ended.

One thing did stand out, sure enough, Mia did in fact make a promise to Eveline that we'd be a family. Sure it was only a ruse to get her to come out, but this must have been what lead to her obsession with the two of us these last three years.

(I didn't want to include the tape itself because you already saw most of it in the first three chapters of the book.)

My memory was back, I could remember everything, including things that I wish I'd known at the Baker home. As the TV went back to static, the tape ejected itself and we both turned to Eveline who watched us expectantly before asking "Now do you remember?"

Mia replied first, saying "Yes Eveline, I remember." I nodded and answered "As do I." Next, Eveline asked "Can we be a family like before?" I sighed and said "Eveline, look it was wrong to have filled your head with ideas, I'm sorry."

I don't know why I was apologizing to the child, no, bioweapon, in front of us. I still loathed her for the crap she'd forced me, Mia, Ethan and the Bakers through these last three years. Yet, a part of me also felt bad for her, Mia had lead her to believe we were her family, and the kindness I'd shown her shortly after her creation, while it was mainly to keep her calm, must have contributed to those thoughts she had.

Mia however answered her question in a much more harsh tone. "No Evie, we can't be a family. We were never a family. We will never BE a family!" Eveline's face dropped, her already vacant expression showed one of anger as she said darkly "Then I don't need you two anymore."

In an instant she seemingly teleported from the chair right in front of us. She laughed loudly before vanishing completely. The lights flickered on and off for a moment as me and Mia both stood in the room, looking around in confusion before we turned to one another.

I growled and said "This is our mess Mia, the mess we made." Mia muttered a response "I know. Damn it, I should have been more careful."  I shook my head before saying "We'll deal with that later, for now our priority should be finding Ethan, to that she replied  "Okay."

Giving one last look to the chair where Eveline was sat, I knew we'd have to be careful now. Making her angry wasn't a good idea but what other choice did we have? She was unhinged, fixated on an idea.

We made our way out of the room, entering a corridor until we came across a lift, the door was half open and clearly not working anymore, even so I said "Mia, come help my with this." We approached the door and with a combined effort were able to pry them both open.

Dropping down onto the top of the lift, we did end up finding a ladder, we both climbed it and found ourselves on a small platform where we found a hole in the floor, leaping through that, we dropped into what appeared to be the control room, for the ship or just an area of it, I'm not sure, I'd never been this far.

Mia suggested "Look around, there might be something in here that can help." I agreed and we spread out around the room. We weren't looking long when Mia called me over "Y/N! Come look at this."

I nodded and approached, Mia was stood by a computer that to my surprise was still active even after all this time, interestingly enough it appeared to be a security camera viewing a part of the ship. Mia suggested "Maybe it still works."

We cycled through the different cameras before coming to a stop on one listed as floor S2, Camera 5. Here we saw a giant wall of Mold, encased in which to our surprise was ETHAN! I just stared with wide eyes as Mia gasped "Ethan... I hope we make it in time. Okay, bottom level..."
