Chapter 17: Marguerite's Swarm and the Shrine
Y/N POV
I continued to squeeze through the narrow passage until at last I came to the other end. For a moment I could still here Marguerite's enraged shrieks however just as I was about to come out the other end, they seemed to cease, the house, fell into complete silence once more, all that could be heard was the creaking of old rickety wood beneath my feet.
Stepping out of the thin crevasse, I took a glance at my surroundings. Interestingly enough, it seemed that be on the other side of that giant hole in the floor, on the other side of which was the front door.
This time though, I noticed a wooden walkway bridging the gap, attached to a crank that I knew wasn't there before. Ethan must have done that while I was busy. Between my little mope and the encounter with Marguerite which lasted longer than I'd hoped, I had no idea how long I'd been gone or how much Ethan had accomplished.
I began looking around at my surroundings, there actually wasn't all that much over here. My focus did eventually land on a door at the top of a flight of stairs with a large black bird, perhaps a crow or raven, emblazoned on it. It was safe to assume that would be the best bet for a future search.
Unfortunately, as I approached the door and attempted to open it only to find it locked, just as I'd come to expect from most of the doors with symbols on them. I was lucky with that scorpion door I found in the main house.
Stepping back down the steps again I muttered "Damn, got to find that key now." I was saved this effort. As if hearing my mutters, I heard a voice saying "Y/N?" Turning around, I saw Ethan carefully stepping over the walkway.
Once he reached the side I was on, he explained "Had to backtrack for a moment, looking for this." He held up a key which looked like it was perfectly fitted for the bird-door ahead of us. I grinned and said "Good thinking, saves me the trouble."
Ethan then added "Yeah, got this as well. With the way things are, we need all the firepower we can get." He passed a weapon to me and I will admit, I was left surprised when I saw what he'd given me was a GRENADE LAUNCHER!
Image of a Grenade Launcher:
I held the launcher up and inspected it. My enthusiasm only increased when I spotted some INCENDIARY rounds in the barrel, the perfect substitute for the flamethrower in this situation. Turning to Ethan I said "Smart. But we'd best get going. Sooner we get this serum the better."
Ethan nodded in agreement, he had the flamethrower and shotgun over each shoulder and I held onto the grenade launcher. We began making out way up the steps once more, towards the door. When the unexpected happened.
Seemingly completely out of no where, Marguerite appeared once again, right in front of us at the top of the stairs! It was like she'd found a way past us without us noticing! With a psychotic tone in her voice she screamed "I TOLD YOU TO STAY OUT OF HERE!"
First she grabbed Ethan, throwing him down the stairs causing him to hit the solid wood below us. I barely had time to react saying "What the f-?" before I was cut off by her screaming "I WON'T HAVE THAT LANGUAGE IN MY HOUSE!" I was then also shoved down the stairs!
As both of us hit the floor, we heard the fragile floorboards cracking under our weight. We tried to brace ourselves however suddenly the boards broke away causing us to fall into a small damp, muddy surface at the bottom.
We each sat up and looked to the top to see Marguerite standing over us, looking down with distain. As we got back to our feet she shrieked "This is what you get for messin' around in places you aren't supposed to!" She held her lantern out as a swarm of flies cascaded towards us!
Ethan swatted away at the flies while I tried to withstand the pain of the bites and aim my newly-acquired Grenade Launcher, Marguerite kept yelling at us "Lord only knows what you and Zoe have been up to!" This was closely followed by "Time for your punishment Y/N!"
The flies continued to bite and I was having trouble keeping my arms straight. In the end I decided to take a blind shot, it was risky but in this situation it was my best chance. I pulled the trigger causing the red incendiary shell to launch out.
My luck was blessed it seemed, the shell flew upwards and impacted Marguerite directly in the face, bursting into a fiery inferno and causing Marguerite to let out a pained scream as she staggered back engulfed in flames.
The flames died down surprisingly quickly though and as soon as they did Marguerite came forward looking even angrier than before as she screamed "That's IT! I'M THROUGH WITH YOUR CRAP! I'M GONNA MAKE YOU WISH YOU WERE DEAD!"
She sent even more insects towards us, Ethan raised his flamethrower to burn them away before pulling out his handgun and shooting several rounds, I did the same with my magnum however I had to be much more careful as I had far fewer rounds.
The combined effort and gunfire proved enough to make Marguerite recoil once again. Upon recovering she sent yet another swarm hurtling down towards us which Ethan roasted with the flamethrower. She screeched "You're gonna die in this hole and like it! As for you Y/N, I'll drag your barely-breathin' body back to Evie to see what SHE wants done to you!" I ignored her threat and instead used this time to load another incendiary round into the launcher's barrel.
Ethan fired several more handgun rounds at her, avoiding the flies she sent out until I was finally ready. Raising the grenade launcher once more, I pulled the trigger and watched at the round shot out, impacting Marguerite directly in the face once again!
This time she let out one final scream of "NO!" Before toppling forward and falling down into the pit where we were! She rolled onto her front and gasped out "No... it's mine... it's mine... My light."
A black liquid spread up from the ground and much to both mine and Ethan's surprise, began enveloping Marguerite's body. We wasted no time rushing to the ladder on the side and climbing back up to the surface. Turning back and looking at Marguerite's body being consumed by the black substance. Ethan commented "What was that?!" I responded "I don't know, hopefully we've seen the end of her for now though."
With Marguerite at least incapacitated, we once again headed for the stairs leading to the door. This time there were no more delays so Ethan took out the key he found and fit it in the lock. With a twist, there was a clicking and the door swung open, what we found on the other side was a strange sight to say the least.
It appeared to be some form of shrine, on a pedestal underneath a picture surrounded in dolls and plants was a small box. The sight alone gave me chills however the box itself gave off an ominous vibe.
We both approached it and once we were close enough Ethan's wrist device beeped, glancing at it we saw a message simply reading "Target located." The meaning behind that held familiarity for me however I ignored that feeling and instead opened the box up.
Inside was even more strange than the shrine itself. The box contained several bottles and what appeared to be some sort of deformed baby-like model in a foetal position, several ropes holding it down.
Ethan pointed and said "There's a note." We looked at the top of the box, a piece of paper was stuck to it. While most of the writing was faded, we did make out some interesting info.
'Regarding the -Series serum:
-the following items-
-be able to synthesize the serum-
1: D-Series Cranial Nerve
2: D-Series Peripheral Nerve.'
That was all it said. The term 'D-Series' was extremely familiar. I knew this was the key we were looking for as I said "Perfect. This is our clue." Ethan nodded and said "This is it." As if on cue, the phone behind us rang.
I knew what this meant and said to Ethan, "I'll get it." Going over I picked it up to hear the familiar voice of Zoe asking "Well? Did you find the serum?" Ethan leaned over my shoulder and explained "We just got done dealing with your mum and her fucking bugs. Wish you could have warned me."
Zoe chuckled faintly and apologized "Sorry about that." She asked once more "What about the Serum?" I explained "We haven't found any, but we did find out what we need to make some. A D-Series head and an arm." Ethan commented "This can't be right."
Zoe commented "A head? I think I have that around here somewhere. I don't know about the arm though. Have you searched the whole house?" I replied "No, not yet. We still need to check the second floor here."
To that Zoe said "Alright check it out. Meet me at the trailer if you find it." With that she hung up. I placed the phone down before turning to Ethan. We both remained silent but nodded to one another. We may have not found the serum, but we had the clue to how we could make it.
That was a start right?
Author's Note: And that's it for this chapter. We're nearing the end of the third part to this segment with the final Marguerite boss fight, hopefully that's interesting to write. I really hope you liked this chapter and as always, thank you for reading.
