Chapter 16: Escaping the Queen of the Flies
Y/N POV
I remained sat on the floor for a few minutes, staring off at the metal fence where Mia had been stood moments earlier. I had no idea where Lucas had taken her, he was always the least predictable and most enigmatic of the Baker family.
With another saddened sigh, I shifted a bit and placed my head into my hands. My contempt towards the Bakers and what they'd put myself, Mia, even Zoe, their own daughter through was indescribable. And yet, even there, me and Mia were partially to blame.
They weren't acting like this off their own accord, they were infected with Eveline's 'gift' the Mold. And unlike myself and Mia who maintained some level of control or Zoe who seemed to have full-on resisted control, Jack, Marguerite and presumably Lucas as well had all been completely consumed by it, they were too far-gone now, nothing more than puppets for her to play with.
It was Eveline who was responsible for turning the Bakers into these monsters. However it was me and Mia who brought her to this area. I just wish I could remember more about what lead us both to being out here in the first place. If only my memory would just come back!
I banged my fist into the wall in anger. I'd have thought my memory would have returned by now. Yet three years had passed since I'd woken up in the main house, greeted by a sane Jack Baker and even now the only reference I had was that note Mia left in the trailer. That serum gave us a chance of FINALLY putting an end to what was going on. Even if I couldn't do that, we may be able to get out of here.
With that thought, I eventually decided I'd done enough moping. My priority was finding a serum or at least something that could point me closer to it. Zoe seemed to think this old house had something to do with it so I guess my best option was to catch up with Ethan. I shouldn't have let him wander off alone but I needed my moment alone.
Standing up, I wasted no time heading through the door and back out through the small crawlspace into the main room of the house. After that I began back-tracking through the house, hoping Ethan had found a use for that strange stone statuette we found. I also hoped I wouldn't fall too far behind him.
Unfortunately this wasn't the case, as I began walking deeper into the house, I saw a dim light up ahead. I'd seen this light before and knew EXACTLY who it was. There was no way around her though so I kept going, hoping I'd find something or maybe, if I was lucky, be able to take her out like I did Jack.
The light shone barely through the crack in the partially-open door as I tiptoed towards the door. As I drew closer, that light suddenly vanished from sight. Assuming Marguerite had moved on to another room, I took my chance picking up my pace.
Upon reaching the door, I leaned forward and attempted to peer into the room, see what was going on. That's when Marguerite abruptly appeared, her eye staring directly through the narrow crack right back at me!
I gasped and stepped back as the door was flung open, banging against the wall in the process. Marguerite Baker stood in the doorway, grinning at me with the same insane expression I'd seen her constantly wear over the last three years. The dim lantern was held out in front of her, flies buzzed frantically around both it and her.
"I thought I heard the sound of a rat scurrying." She spoke as she frantically scratched at the side of her face, as if trying to rid herself of the insects crawling along her, to no avail though. I stepped back as she approached.
"Why do you reject Evie's gifts Y/N? You're a part of her family as well y'know? Just like us." I didn't reply, instead I kept stepping back down the corridor. Marguerite's grin abruptly faded though and in its place was a sickening snarl.
"Y'know what? I wonder sometimes if it's you and that damn sister of yours responsible for corruptin' little Zoe's mind. Maybe if it weren't for the pair of you, she would embrace our newest family member."
As she came towards me, flies flew towards me and attempted to bite at me however I just swatted them away to the best of my ability. Marguerite laughed before saying "Evie still wants you to be her uncle so I can't risk killing you yet. But I sure as hell can still punish you!" Those words caused me to reach for my magnum.
Raising it, I didn't even bother warning her. That effort was pointless as I'd learned with Jack. Instead I wasted no time opening fire. Two gunshots sounded throughout the house, one hit Marguerite in the lower torso, the second hit her square in the forehead.
The sheer force of the two shots send Marguerite to the ground on her back. While an ordinary person would no-doubt have been killed by that, I doubted Marguerite would go out to two gunshots, even from a 44 Magnum.
Sure enough, I was proved right, I attempted to step around Marguerite however I was stopped when I felt a hand firmly grip my ankle. Looking down I saw Marguerite looking up with another grin stretched across her face. She cackled and asked "Where do you think you're goin'?!"
Too my surprise, she got up even quicker than I'd though. I scowled and muttered "Really shouldn't have given Ethan that flamethrower." I rose my foot and kicked Marguerite in the face, managing to struggle my foot from her grip.
I ran through the door and soon found myself in the room with the projector. And just as I'd hoped, I noticed the stone statuette I gave Ethan resting on the stone podium and the wall with the portrait was no opened up to reveal a narrow slot passage.
I made a run for the narrow path however before I could, I was tackled and pinned against the wall by Marguerite who snapped "I'm not gonna let you slip away from me that easily boy!" I struggled to break her grip on me.
This struggle kept going for about a minute, Marguerite was proving far more resistant than she thought as she said "I've got you now HEH HEH! You're finally gonna become a part of our family!" She began laughing again and this gave me my chance.
A third gunshot rang out as I fired my magnum directly into her stomach! With a cry of pain she recoiled back but wasn't severely harmed. I used this moment though to grab the stone statuette and in a swift motion struck Marguerite around the head with it!
This knocked her completely to the floor, I hit her twice more in an effort to stun her before dropping the statuette and raced towards the narrow passage. Marguerite recovered and attempted to grab at me however I was just about to squeeze through.
As I pushed through the small path, I could hear Marguerite behind me calling out "Get back here boy! Come into MY house! Disrespect MY family! When I catch up with you I'm going to rip one of your arms off! You can't run forever!" Looking back I could see her frantically clawing into the gap, trying to reach me.
Luckily, I was out of her reach, and she didn't think to simply and crawl through as well. I felt relieved. I had managed to escape Marguerite for now. But for how long? It didn't matter at the moment.
My priority now was finding Ethan again and hopefully, something related to this 'serum'...
Author's Note: And that's it for this chapter. I'm sorry, this chapter was meant to be done yesterday, but I had quite a stressful day so I ended up only doing the first few paragraphs. I do hope you enjoyed it though and as always, thank you for reading.
