Chapter 1: The Breakout on the Tanker
Y/N POV
It doesn't take long for a small spark to blaze out into a full-grown fire. And that's how this incident began, small, yet in an instant spiralled out of control. I often think, was it this incident that shaped my whole life from that point on? It certainly felt like it.
I had always shown an aptitude and interest in science, especially in biology and chemistry. At the age of 19, shortly after getting a degree, I was approached by an organization known simply as 'The Connections' I didn't trust them however I desperately needed to pay the rent and their money was stable so I agreed.
My older sister Mia was also hired for this same project unbeknownst to her husband Ethan. Her presence put me at ease. That was a few years ago now and both of us had been assigned to a tanker named 'Annabelle', escorting a very important cargo to a facility in central America, that's when things started to go wrong...
I was just in my quarters, reading a book I'd bought just for this journey. Outside hurricane force winds billowed against the side of the ship, I don't know how we were staying upright but there was no reason to panic, yet at least.
Suddenly I heard a loud bang outside my room that caused me to leap upright. What made this so shocking was that it appeared to be coming from WITHIN the ship itself. I exclaimed to no one in particular "What the hell was that noise?!"
I stood up and made my way out of the room, entering the long corridor outside. I looked back and forth down either side however there wasn't anyone in sight, in fact it seemed quiet, too quiet. There wasn't a single sound aside from the winds outside.
I was cut short by another bang, this one seemed much more identifiable. It seemed like it was coming from a room further down the corridor. I narrowed my eyes and in what was perhaps a foolish move, I began approaching the room where the banging was originating from.
The source seemed to be originating from one door in particular. I looked around for a moment, still seeing no one in sight before I gently placed my hand on the door and pushed it open. My eyes squinted when I realized that whatever this room was, the lights were off making it near impossible to see anything.
While inside this room I could hear strange sounds, there was definitely something alive in here. I fumbled along the walls for the light switch and eventually found it. I really wished I hadn't.
As soon as the light came on, I was met with a hulking black figure, definitely not human, no, I recognized this as a Bio-organic weapons, likely sprouted from our valuable cargo. Upon noticing me, the Mold-covered Bioweapon bared its teeth at me.
Image of a Molded:
As the Molded shuffled forward, I staggered back muttering "Oh crap". Nearly tripping over myself in the process. I managed to maintain my footing however as tried heading towards the door when the Bioweapon lunged forward.
It tried to scratch at me with its clawed hand however I abruptly ducked causing the Molded to scratch the metal door leaving claw marks behind in the process. I moved to the side as the creature lashed out again attempting to swipe at me however just like before, I moved causing it to break through a series of boxes while I ran out of the room.
The Molded emerged shortly after, following me down the corridor. I knew exactly what had caused it's creation however I didn't know WHY it was here. Something had happened an I aimed to figure out what ONCE I'd dealt with this B.O.W right here.
I was lucky though, as I ran, with the Molded in pursuit. I soon came across another small storage room and after looking around frantically for an escape route, I noticed a small cabinet and inside of it was a submachine gun. I grinned and said "Bingo, I'll be taking you."
Image of a P19 Submachine Gun:
I was extremely lucky, if I'd have not found the gun here, I'd have been screwed as the Molded entered the dead-end storage room shortly after me. I turned around and instantly opened fire, the rapid fire rounds all impacting the B.O.W in the head until it finally collapsed to the ground.
I just stood there for a moment, a small trail of smoke coming from the tip of my gun. I caught my breath for a moment before stepping forward and standing over the Mold B.O.W as its body dissolved into a black mush.
Like I said before, the shock wasn't that this B.O.W existed, I'd seen multiple of them be created over the last year. What concerned me greatly was the fact that there was one HERE on this ship, roaming free. I suddenly looked up and gasped "Mia."
With the submachine gun still in hand, I raced along the corridor. It was safe to assume there were many more of those Molded on the ship. I had to find Mia and make sure she was alright. She could also possibly fill me in on what was happening.
The last time I saw her, she was with Alan, another of our colleagues. Him and Mia had the most interaction with the subject, I'd only interacted with it a few times myself however I knew full-well what it was capable of.
I headed towards the elevator and pressed to go up. the ride was silent and soon I arrived on the floor where Alan's room was. I rushed along the corridor and swiftly opened the door instantly asking "Mia, are you in here?"
I heard a cough, followed by a weak voice saying "No. She's not." Looking down, my eyes widened when I saw Alan sat on the sofa, gasping for air with his hand clasped at his side.
Image of Alan Droney:
I ran over and knelt next to him, asking "Alan, what the hell happened here?! Are you okay? Where's Mia?!" Alan tried to sit upright a bit however he slumped again, groaning in pain before he replied "She got out, that's what happened."
I looked to the side and muttered "Damnit." You see, the 'cargo' I've been talking about was actually an extremely dangerous B.O.W created by our very own organization, designed to resemble a 10 year old girl, I'm not sure why that specific choice was decided upon, her name was Eveline.
Alan and Mia were assigned as her 'caregivers' acting as parent figures towards her. Like I said, I'd only had a few interactions with her myself, she kind of put me on edge yet I taught her things like how to read, other than that, I just observed.
I asked Alan "How did that happen? How did she get out?!" Alan replied weakly "The hurricane, must have disturbed her. She rebelled and attacked. I think she managed to infect me, I don't know how long I've got left."
I looked around frantically "There's got to be something-." Alan cut me off "No, it's too late now. Mia, you've got to find Mia and get Eveline back under control." I nodded and said "Right, I'm on it." After that Alan just collapsed onto the chair, not dead, simply resting.
Meanwhile I got back to my feet, raised the P19 Submachine Gun I'd found. It was obvious I'd come across more of those Molded. However my goal was clear, find Mia and either get Eveline back under control or put a stop to her.
Little did I know, things wouldn't go so smoothly and like I said in the beginning, this incident would set in motion a chain of events that would define my entire family's fate...
Author's Note: And that's it for this chapter, the first one for this book. Please tell me what you thought of it, I will admit, since I'm new to this idea I found it kind of difficult. Hopefully you enjoyed it nonetheless and as always, thank you for reading,
