Chapter 6: Signs
Blair woke up bright and early this fine morning to get everything prepared beforehand, just how she liked it. She called the town's best renovator team and pre-ordered all the furniture before she went to sleep last night. Blair didn't like to waste any time, and although all she did was handle a shop, she knew she couldn't stay away for her store for too long. Blair was determined to finish all the renovations in four weeks.
She quickly slipped on an old pair of jeans that were wildly ripped, like a cat had all its fun with it, but she didn't mind since today's work required raggedy clothes. She pulled on a flannel on top of her white camisole and some boots for her own safety- not that her magic would let anything fall on her, but one can never be too cautious is what Blair told all her customers.
Blair had just finished securing her hair in a chignon when she heard a honk of a car outside her window, she knew it was directed towards her since the only neighbour of her house was a forest. She grabbed the beige duffle bag that was already packed with some extra clothes, magazines, tools and her laptop. Even a witch occasionally needs the Internet.
She dashed down her porch stairs. "Tony!"
"Good morning, Blair." He smiled, but her feet froze when she laid eyes on him. "What's wrong?" he asked her.
"You're not wearing a suit," she waved at his appearance. He was also in jeans and a regular blue jumper.
He chuckled. "Ah yes, Mr. Steele ordered that I give you a helping hand," he said. "And secretly, I wanted to work with you."
She grinned. "Don't think I'm going to go easy on you because you're my friend," she said as he opened the car door. "This is going to be a wild job, Tony."
"I'm expecting it to be." He shut her door and hopped in next to her.
Her phone buzzed on her lap and the message she was hoping for popped up.
We are at the location.
"I called in Mr. Jones to help us move the remaining furniture and deliver the new things I ordered," she told Tony as they reached the back of the hotel, they both spotted Jones's team in their blue uniform and massive truck parked on the side.
"Jones," she waved at them before grabbing her bag and running to their side. "Thank you for coming on such short notice."
Jones smiled warmly. "Anything for you midear."
Jones was a huge intimidating man with a thick white beard and hair, he had great big arms and long legs that were knotted with muscles everywhere. But Blair knew he was a complete teddy bear on the inside, but he just loved to scare people. However, it was very hard to get on his good side; any wrong word or action and you're done.
"Jones this is Tony, the one I told you about last night," she presented Tony who was awkwardly craning his neck to see the scariest man in town. "Tony, this is Jones." Tony stuck out his palm, and a few moments had gone by when Jones unlaced his strong arms and grasped Tony's hand, he shook it wildly with a full hearty laugh that Blair was used to, he smacked his hand on Tony's frail shoulder.
"I'm just playing with you," said Jones.
Tony finally smiled from relief. He quickly guided them towards a private elevator and everyone got to work with Blair's instructions.
Hours had passed with them dashing through doors and from the storage rooms in the basement back to the massive space that was completely empty now, her voice echoed in the void that was cold and dull. Blair leaned on the cold wall with her laptop propped on her sore thighs that were still aching from today's raging workout. The gold light pushed the blue sky away which warned everyone that dusk wasn't far behind, and nightfall was on its way. But our shop owner wasn't paying any attention outside of her wide laptop screen.
"You're still here?" A deep voice startled her.
"Maddox, you scared me," she said.
"Sorry," he said. "Where's Tony?"
She looked around the room dazed. "I don't know," she told him. She kneaded the tight muscle in her neck, when she noticed the dark shadows swamping around her; she didn't even realize the time.
"You got everything out in one day," he sounded impressed.
She smiled while peeling her glasses off. "I wanted to start the renovations as soon as possible," she said. "So, I made everyone work 'till they dropped," she chuckled. "Tony's probably passed out somewhere." She shut her screen and the blaring blue light shut off with it.
Blair looked up to find Maddox leaning on the door's entrance with a crystal glass in his hand. He wore formal clothes, but there wasn't the blazer he had on this morning, or the tie, and the sleeves where rolled up revealing his strong forearms. Surprisingly he had a tattoo, she couldn't spell it out but it was dangerously appealing to her. She had a tattoo herself but it worked differently from the normal ones, hers was the family emblem; a rose which was inked on the back of her neck as a protection seal.
"I should be heading home too," she said as she packed her duffle bag, suddenly a great chill crawled down her spine and her eyes began to flutter heavily.
"If you want, I have a spare bedroom," offered Maddox. "You can crash here for tonight."
Blair shook her head. "No, I couldn't impose like that," she declined with a yawn.
"I don't really mind," he said. "And besides you're coming here tomorrow, save yourself the trip."
She hesitated for a moment. "Alright, thank you," she said with a small lazy smile.
She followed him quickly to a clean bedroom that smelt of fresh laundry and forest pine. He shut the door and left her in a luxurious bedroom. She quickly dragged herself to the massive bathroom because she was barely able to stay on her feet.
After the hot bath, she slipped into the spare shirt she brought and dropped dead on the fluffy bed, her sore arms pulled the heavy duvet over her body and she fell into the demanding darkness that aroused wild dreams like always.
Blair rolled over in the ruffled sheets as her body began to ache with the cold breeze, her soul craved heat, but there was none. Her eyes reluctantly flickered open only to find herself in a dark room filled with iridescent moonlight that powered her magic, she slipped on some pants and wondered what time it was. She rubbed her hands together and conjured a small spark of heat but it didn't help, she was too cold.
Blair moved with the air, a streak of warmth swirled around her and she followed it.
The doors squeak was thunderous since it was so quiet, she tip-toed out of the room and wandered to the lounge area where the streak of amber enchantment resided. Her ears perked at the soft crackling sound that made her heart flutter with excitement, the floors glistened with gold and orange hues dancing everywhere along the white. She turned the corner hall and spotted a roaring fire that hungrily consumed thick wood pieces. She slid onto the couch and pulled her legs close to her chest as she observed the flickering fire, slowly she fell under its spell, the flame began to slow down and lose spirit. Blair flicked her finger and a twinkle of magic sparked the fire alive again. She sighed from satisfaction. But the magic that brought her here didn't belong to the fire, it was something much stronger.
"Still awake," said a deep voice.
Blair turned her head and saw Maddox, he strode towards her with tousled damp hair, he was dressed in casual sweats paired with a simple white shirt. Damn he looked hot.
"I got cold," she spoke softly.
"Oh sorry, I like my air-conditioning turned up pretty high," he said and he took a seat casually next to her and rested his elbows on his knees. She suddenly got a closer view of his tattoo which looked like a date inked in roman numerals.
"What time is it anyway?" She asked as she secretly examined his tattoo.
He ruffled his hair that laid gingerly on his forehead. "Quarter past twelve," he answered. "Er- I was about to make dinner, would you like to join me?"
Blair smiled. "I would love to" -she followed him closely to the sleek, modern kitchen and perched herself on the counter stool- "do you play?"
His gaze followed hers to the grand piano. "Yes."
"My-"
"Your mom taught you," she interrupted.
His golden gaze widened. "How'd you know that?"
Blair leaned on the counter. "Usually moms like to teach their kids more than fathers," she said.
"She made sure I knew how to play the piano and cook," said Maddox with a sweet smile.
"That's nice," said Blair. "My parents didn't teach me much."
"Then who taught you to be a psychic?" Maddox asked.
"I'm not a psychic," said Blair.
Maddox took out a frying pan from the bottom shelf. "How else did you acquire such a particular skillset."
Blair grinned. "It's a secret."
"I'm beginning to wonder you have a lot of those," he remarked.
Her brow arched before she twirled on her chair away from his dark amber gaze. "I hope you can play for me one day," she said. "Would you like me to help?"
He handed her a knife and some colourful bell peppers, she hummed as she got chopping.
. . .
"Dinner was delicious, thank you," said Blair.
"You're welcome," said Maddox. "So, what are your plans for my office."
"I have almost finished designing a layout for you to see," she said. "I think you'll be quite pleased."
"You seem sure of yourself," said Maddox.
"I never get these types of things wrong," she remarked with pride.
Maddox nodded. "Don't be so sure," he said. "I might surprise you."
"Nothing really surprises me," she grinned. "I've seen the most peculiar of things in this world."
"Fine, don't show me the layout you have planned," challenged Maddox. "If you're so confident, then finish the entire office first."
"How do I know you won't take a peak?" asked Blair.
"You'll be here to guard it," said Maddox. "And besides, there are no cameras in my office. So, no one will be able to see anything for that matter."
Blair taken aback. "There's no cameras in your office?"
"I like that space very private," said Maddox.
"That's why it's passcode secured instead," noted Blair.
Maddox nodded.
"Alright you have yourself a deal," agreed Blair. "I will finish your office in four weeks and you'll love it." Blair picked up her plate and arranged the rich ceramic in the dish washer.
Maddox laughed very briefly, but it charmed Blair.
She tried to move to the side to give Maddox access to the dishwasher, but as she turned around, his massive form slammed into hers. Blair's bare feet slipped on the tiles and she landed straight in his arms. His burning amber gaze smouldered into her mind, and his arms tightened around her waist to keep her anchored on her feet. She didn't know how long they were frozen like this, but all she felt was his fiery touch and the contours of his hard body fit snuggly against hers, his strong dark scent of jasmine and thyme bewitched her. The slight tingle crawling up her neck startled her to get out of his arms.
"I'm going to head to bed, goodnight," she blurted out before scurrying off to her room.
