Chapter 26: Three Rings Seal

Blair waited outside the door that Maddox had entered to tell his family of the dangers that was about to befall tonight. They had all gathered in Maddox's suite, because the entity would come looking for her, now that it knew she had the dagger. She would have done it at her house, but it was too guarded by hexes, which would take days to take down and they didn't have time to waste. The dagger was strapped around Blair's hip and it wasn't going to wait for to be ready.

"Any word?" asked Anastasia.

"None yet," said Blair. The two cousins stood in the hallway waiting for Maddox to return. "Is everything ready?" she asked Ana.

"Yeah," she said. "The three-ring seal has been prepared."

"Alright," said Blair. "I'll trap the entity and you have to protect all of them."

"What about you?" asked Anastasia. "You'll need help."

"We don't have time," said Blair. "I have the dagger, I can do it." The door opened and Maddox walked out. "How'd they take the news?" she asked him.

"I think they understand," said Maddox. "I told them about the attacks and everything I saw, so they believe me as much as they could."

"Can I have a moment with them?" she asked him, Maddox nodded and only then did she enter, because she knew that his family was now ready for her instructions.

"Blair," the panic on Eleanor's face was clear. "Is my family really in danger?"

Blair gathered Eleanor's hands in her own. "Anastasia will be here to protect you, whilst I get rid of the threat."

"Is it true that our father brought it to this world?" asked Melinda. "Is this our fault? All of the attacks, your shop."

Blair shook her head. "None of this is your fault," she reassured them. "The entity has been plotting this since its creation. Do not blame yourself."

Melinda and Eleanor's grim expressions didn't let up. "How will you get rid of this...thing?" asked Melinda.

"I'll explain it to you after it's all done," she said. "Now, I need you three to stay with Anastasia. Can you do that for me?"

The Steele family nodded. "What about you?" asked Eleanor. "How are you going to do this alone?"

Blair smiled. "I'll be fine," she said. "But I need you three to stay safe and out of harm's way, so I can concentrate." Blair knew that she had got through to them, so they'd stay beside Anastasia through the whole ritual. She made her way back to the front door, when Maddox followed her right behind her.

"Will you really be alright?" he asked her.

"With duties such as mine, I am not always guaranteed things such as safety," she tried to answer his question to the best of her abilities and not lie. "I have to do this to keep everyone safe," she said. "And that means I have to go to places, others fear."

Maddox cupped her nape and titled her head back, so her eyes met his. "How are you not afraid?" he dazed.

"Because I trust my abilities," she said. "I know that I can protect myself no matter what comes my way."

Maddox kissed her lips, and then, he embraced her. "You're amazing, Blair Lightwood," he whispered. "And I am bewitched by your magic every day."

Blair chuckled. "I know, my powers are pretty impressive," she boasted.

"I meant the magic that's in your heart," he said softly.

Blair's breath froze when she heard his words. "Maddox, I had to tell you something," she said. "It's about us and your family."

Maddox pulled away and looked at her. "What is it?"

"Do you know a woman named, Sienna Steele?" she asked.

Maddox nodded. "Yeah, that's my grandma," he told her. "She married my grandpa, Lachlan Steele. Why?"

Blair was about to get into the whole truth of how she found him; the secret behind the magic that brought them together; his family bloodline. But they were interrupted by a dark, ominous energy that stood right outside the front door. "It's here," she said as she faced the door. "Go to Anastasia, Maddox."

Blair knew that the protection seals she had put up in front of the door stopped the entity from entering. She opened the door and in front of her stood an insidious creature; it had long black limbs and claws as fingers. Its black feet dripped like ink and left a footprint trail behind him. She stared into his beady red eyes that spoke evil, his hungry mouth full of razor-sharp teeth with a blazing red tongue. But it simply stood outside the door, like a guest who had been invited to the house. Patiently it waited for her to remove the spell and let him in. The moment she felt Maddox disappear from the sight of the entity, she figured that she could remove the seal and prepare for the trap to unveil.

"I didn't even need to call for you," she commented. The entity tilted his head and made a low hissing sound like it cursed at her. "Calm down," she bit out. "No need to rush."

Blair set the protection seals aflame and watched them die in the blaze. Until they turned to ash, only then could the entity enter. And when that happened, the sense of victory crossed over the entity's face. Without any hesitation, it took the first step inside the house. The heat in the house all died away and as the entity got closer; icy cold energy tailed behind it.

Blair stepped back and let it come to her. And as it followed, she knew she had gotten it trapped under her spell. The entity naively stepped into the three-ring pentagram without even realizing that it had. His face glowered with anger and resentment the moment it understood that it was all a trap. Blair closed the circle with black salt and caged the entity inside. Dark amber light glowed around it, which was enough to burn its body if it tried to escape from her seal, but that light didn't harm mortals or witches.

Blair pulled out the dagger and the fear on the entity's face grew. It started to go erratic inside the barrier circle. The menacing magic from the entity caused an eruption in the house; the lights flickered and the glass broke around the room. Mirrors shattered around Blair and she crouched down for cover when the lamps and chairs flew across the room. Blair dodged the flying objects with a wave of her hand and continued with her spell to bind it down. The three rings started to glow blue as her spell progressed and restrained the entity's power.

Suddenly, the door opened and out came everyone with stunned expressions as they viewed the disaster in the room. But they all paled, when they saw what Blair was battling.

"What the hell are you doing?" snapped Blair since she had to put a hold on her spell.

"It's Anastasia!" yelled Maddox.

Blair's turned her head to find another spirit holding Anastasia by her neck. "Ana!"

"Everything's... fine," she choked out. "Just...got...caught...off...guard!" Anastasia broke free after she ripped herself out of the tight grip and kicked the spirit in the face.

Blair's menacing glare landed on the entity that was being tortured. "Aren't you smart," she remarked, "bringing buddies to the fight." A few more minutes and the spell would drain out the entity's energy. But Blair wasn't that lucky. Since the protection seal on the door had been broken; spirit after spirit entered the house. Blair's eyes widened when she saw how many dark ghouls had followed this entity.

Anastasia emerged from the room after she destroyed the ghoul. Her eyes went straight to the swarm of ghoul that had gathered. "Finish the spell, Blair!" she yelled as the ghouls surrounded only Ana in particular. "These ghouls will all leave once that entity dies."

Blair poured every last bit of strength into her spell. The entity bellowed and cried for help, that's when the ghouls sprang into action. Anastasia stood in front of Blair protecting her from any ghouls that could disrupt the spell. The light around the three rings grew brighter and Blair knew the spell was close. But Anastasia was overwhelmed by the numbers.

"Hurry up, Blair!" she shouted as she fell to the floor and took a spirit down with her.

Blair let her hand spring free from the three-ring spell and she helped her cousin. She destroyed three spirits, that had ganged up on Anastasia who was busy with another one. Blair realized that this wasn't good, they were in trouble and more was too come. Blair's body covered in sweat and wounds from the dark magic, she almost wanted to let go of the three-ring spell and stab the entity right now. But she was stuck between helping her cousin or destroying this foul demon.

Suddenly, a flash of white light blasted across the room detonating everything in its path. Anastasia and Blair sighed in relief when the ghouls had been warded off, but not for long.

"Took you long enough," alleged Anastasia as she got off the floor with bruises and blood.

Anastasia's brother, Nate waltzed inside with his cobalt blue eyes burning with resolve. "It's not over yet," he announced. "Finish the spell, Blair. We've got this." Nate and Anastasia stood in front of Blair as protectors. This time Blair knew there would be no interruptions, because her family had come.

Blair got off her knees and finished the spell draining all the life out of the entity. The light had vanished and Blair knew the spell had been completed. She reached for the dagger again, but something quite peculiar occurred.

"What's wrong?" asked Nate.

"The entity," she said. "It's dead."

"Isn't that a good thing?" asked Nate.

Blair shook her head. "It can only die by the blade," she said worriedly. "Something's not right." Abruptly, all the spirits that had gathered to fight them, were sucked back into the dark hall beyond the door. Blair made her way towards the door; all she could see was the darkness and evil swimming in the void.

"It's still alive," she said.

"How can that be?" asked Maddox. "Then, what did you trap over there?"

"Do you think the entity set up a trap?" suggested Anastasia.

"To send another creature in its place," said Blair, "only means that the entity has possessed a human body, instead of making one. It has reached its full power."

"It was distracting you," said Maddox. "The ghosts, the shop, all of it was to turn your head another direction."

"To do what?" asked Nate grimly.

Blair recalled all of the events; Alexander Ainsley, the ghosts, the attacks, her shop and meeting such a despicable entity. But the one thing that was buzzing in front of her as she stood at the threshold of the door, was Tony falling sick and becoming distant with her, so distant that he couldn't even touch her, because if he had, she would have found out the truth behind his illness.

"Has anyone seen Tony?" she asked.

Maddox gaped at her. "You think Tony-" before Maddox could finish his last words, something grabbed Blair and pulled her into the abyss. "Blair!" She heard them call out her name in fear and panic, but nothing stopped her from being yanked into the spirit realm. Far away from home, from Maddox.
