Chapter 9 - Didn't See It Coming

9. Didn't See it Coming

(POV) Mr. Davenport

I sighed as I pulled over two chairs for myself and Dr. Evans to sit during the simulation. Hopefully, this would go just as planned, and by planned, I mean Leo will fail. I'm not in the kind of capacity to give out bionics like Halloween candy. Plus, Dr. Evans will want to help, thinking he is my new lab assistant. Not that that would be completely horrible, but I put him out in the ice and cold for a reason.

Leo walked over and picked up the glasses off the controls. I walked over calmly, and picked up the remote.

"Leo, you ready?" I asked, he looked as though he had been lost deep in the twisted mind I must cal my step son's. He nodded quickly and stepped up onto the simulator before putting on the glasses. I smiled slyly as I clicked the on button, this was going to be fun... I hope.

I turned back to Dr. Evans who sat patiently in the lawn chairs I had set out. I had a monitor set up next to us where we could see what was happening. It was practically like the one in the lab that my evil brother decided to blow up. Jerk.

"What did you program it to do?" Dr. Evans asked as we waited for the settings to match up.

"I set it on surprise mode. We don't know what's going to happen." I explained excitedly. This was pretty exciting if I do say so myself. We had only every used the simulator on a non bionic human once before. Of course this non bionic human was Leo, but still. I didn't get to watch last time.

"Here we go." Dr. Evans stated happily as the setting came into view. I frowned as I glanced over to see a darkened sky with gray clouds. Tall grass was everywhere while an empty forest was off to one side, as well.

"Big D? What am I supposed to do? Where am I supposed to go?" Leo asked as he began to pace back and forth. I flinched every time he came close to falling off the simulator, thinking momentarily that he would, indeed, fall face first. I shook my head, knowing with my brilliant technology, this would never happen. Leo looked to the side as he ran straight into a man dressed in all black. He fell down to the ground within seconds of the hit. Fear was suddenly written all over my son's features as he looked the man up and down.

"Big D! What do I do?!" He whined. I smiled, I was a huge influence on the boy's life. He wanted my help!

"Leo, don't worry. Just act on instinct." I called, knowing I was just feet from him. In the simulator he wore a headset that was mimicking our interactions. He rolled his eyes.

"Well yeah, I figured. Any better advice?" Leo sputtered as he stumbled backwards a bit. I sat in silence as I racked my brain. I've never had to give this detailed information to anyone during the simulator.

"Stay alive." I replied as I sat on the edge of my seat. Leo nodded and looked back as the thug clenched his hands, ready to hit him. He smiled slyly before throwing a punch Leo's way. Leo jumped to the side, easily dodging the punch before leaping to his feet.

"Hey! Haven't you heard the saying, don't hit a man while he's down?" Leo asked sarcastically, leaving the man in black stunned. He still seemed in shock at the fact that Leo had missed his punch. Leo smiled evilly before bringing a round house kick to him, knocking him down to the ground. Leo's eyes widened as he watched the man on the ground before making a quick decision to run. He used his speed to get away.

"Super speed. Nice!" Leo said as he nodded approvingly. He stopped for a second as he did what could only be thought of as a victory dance. He stopped as he realized who was surrounding him, more thugs.

"Well... that escalated quickly." Leo mumbled as the others began to run towards Leo at full speed. Leo put his hands up to his face in defense. I smiled as he heard the screaming just feet from him. He had no idea what he did. Leo slowly moved his hands away to see the thugs on the ground.

"Big D, how many abilities do I exactly have?" Leo called as he realized he had used one of Chase's famous abilities, molecular kinesis. I laughed as his face grew more confused.

"Oh gee, I don't know. All of them!" I teased. Leo rolled his eyes but soon brought on a face of fake shock.

"Oh my god! Big D, really?!" He asked in feign surprise. I nodded before I remembered he couldn't see me. I smiled in embarrassment as Dr. Evans looked me up and down.

"Yeah. Now that you know, why don't you use those abilities?" I suggested, probably taking out some of my anger from my misfortune out on him. I hope he knew I was kidding.

"I would if I knew what I was supposed to do!" Leo yelled back. Nope, he definitely didn't know I was kidding, or he was kidding. This is too much.

"Beat the thugs, and find the particle collider!" I replied in a more sarcastic tone. Dr. Evans laughed lightly at my joke. I smiled, I am pretty funny.

"Hey Big D? Can you tell your movie buddy over there to shut it? Oh, and stop talking to me like I'm five!" Leo ordered sternly. I closed my mouth as I brought one finger to my mouth, silently telling Dr. Evans to be quiet. He held a thumbs up, understanding my message.

"Oh now you're quiet." Leo said as he shook his head before, yet again, more thugs appeared. They each stood just feet from Leo, ready to attack. Leo sighed and raced away. He stopped as he reached a sort of clearing, noticing that I had sent him the coordinates to the particle collider. It was only fair, I always sent coordinates for Adam, Bree, and Chase. A smile fell to my face as I watched the thugs attempt to run into him, only for them to fall to the ground. Leo picked them up with ease, using his strength, before he threw them aside. He nodded as he picked up the coordinates before he raced off in that direction. Leo glanced back momentarily, noticing someone was following him. I frowned as I tried to make out who it was. They looked familiar. They obviously had bionics as well since they were able to keep up with Leo. The person came into view as Leo finally saw them full on. I felt my face fall as I saw my one and only daughter up on the screen. Bree was running after Leo. Well, she's technically not my daughter per say, but same difference.

"Bree?" Leo asked warily. She stopped as Leo spoke, looking just ahead of him. Her eyes were shinning a bright green. Something was wrong with her. It was the trident app! I thought I turned that off! I stood up to get a closer look. I missed them so much. Wait, this was a simulation. Bree brought up her arm as she took a strike at Leo, who easily caught her fist.

"What are you doing?" Leo yelled worriedly. He had never had to fight his siblings, and or, best friends. Bree kicked Leo swiftly before he fell to the ground. She stared down at him, actually, glared would be a better term. Leo shook his head, looking just a shipments up about this as I was.

"How is Bree in the simulation?" Dr. Evans whispered to me quietly, making sure Leo couldn't hear us. I shrugged, I actually had no idea.

"I don't know. The simulator has never done this before." I pointed out before I focused on Leo fighting Bree.

"Well. Looks like it's someone's time of the month, again." Leo hissed with a sly smile. Bree growled down at Leo, but to no avail. Leo tripped her again.

"You want some chocolate with that?" Leo asked sarcastically. I found myself laughing. I had wanted to ask her that a few times, myself. Bree's face flashed hurt at Leo's most recent dig. She frowned before Leo raced away, leaving his sister far behind. Leo ran until something hit him in the chest. It was Adam. Adam was in this too? Why was this thing using my kids! It was hard enough missing them, and now here they were, beating each other up while Leo fought to get bionics. Leo fell to the ground, gasping for air. Adam leaned down on top of Leo before punching him. Over and over and over again. Leo grabbed onto his shoulders before throwing him off. Leo quickly got up as Adam raced after his little brother. Leo sighed and stopped, taking a fighting position. He grabbed Adam by the arm, launched him over his head. I sat in complete awe. Leo was doing extremely well with this whole bionics thing.

"He's doing great." Dr. Evans whispered, practically reading my mind. I nodded numbly, still in shock of the whole simulation. Leo ran ahead, realizing there was only one of the bionic three left. Chase. Leo stopped and glanced around, waiting almost, for his brother to appear out of thin air.

"Chase, where are you?" Leo called out sarcastically. Leo's eyes widened as he looked down to see he was slowly being lifted into the air. I felt my own mouth drop as I saw at the corner of the screen, my youngest bionic lifting Leo into the air.

"Molecular kinesis, smart. But you forget that two can play at this game." Leo yelled before he spun around and lifted Chase into the air. The two were up about twenty feet, one simply holding the other in place. Chase began to struggle as he glanced down to the ground.

"Listen, Chase. I'll let go if you do." Leo reasoned. Chase glared back at Leo, throwing him, with as much power as he could come up with, to the ground. Leo cried out in pain as he hit the ground. Chase caught himself in midair before landing smoothly on his feet. He smiled snidely down at Leo as he began to choke him with his molecular kinesis. My heart stopped as I watched my two boys try to kill each other. But this would never happen in real life. I mean it could, but it won't. Somehow Leo had finally met his match in this twisted simulation.

"Chase!" Leo squeaked as he swayed his arms back and forth, drawing more attention to the fact that he was losing air quickly. Chase smiled evilly before he pulled Leo upward. He brought Leo up so he was face to face with Chase. Chase smirked as he tightened his grip, letting more air escape him. That was it. I had to stop the simulation. This couldn't go on any longer. He was about to die... Kind of. He wouldn't in real life but this may cause some serious physiological damage. I walked forward, picking up the remote as I watched Leo fall to the ground as Chase saw him lose consciousness. I held my hand to the button, almost half expecting Leo to make a reappearance. He had made it too far to die now. Chase smiled in victory as he walked away. I shook my head. This was it. I brought my hand up a bit for dramatic affect before I felt a hand clasp down on my shoulder. I jumped before Dr. Evans pointed to the screen, showing me that Leo had opened his eyes. Leo got up, looking a tad discombobulated, before he used his speed to run up behind Chase. Leo stopped just behind him and tapped his shoulder lightly. Chase's eyes widened as he turned to face Leo warily, obviously not expecting this of him.

"I can't believe you thought you got rid of me that easily." Leo scoffed before he spun and kicked Chase to the ground. Chase's back hit a nearby tree before he sunk down in pain. I cringed myself, wanting to run and help my son. Leo glanced back at Chase one last time before running towards the particle collider. Leo raced through the woods quickly before coming to a large cliff. He stopped just before he hit the edge, looking over to see how deep the cliff really was. Down below, sat the particle collider, Leo was meant to fix... Or destroy. Either way works for me.

"What the hell is this Big D?!" Leo asked as he walked over to the edge. He sat back in thought before he heard something behind him. Leo turned warily to see Adam, Bree and Chase. The three stood on every side of him. Trapping him, so the only way out, was down.

"Trust your instincts." Leo mumbled as he looked back to the cliff. A smiled graced his face before he glanced back to his siblings who stood confidently in front of him.

"Tag... you're it." Leo yelled before he turned and ran towards the cliff, looking back as he did. Adam, Bree, and Chase sprinted after him, leaning out towards him, trying to catch him. The three held their arms out to grab him. Leo smiled slyly before jumping off the edge of the cliff. My heart dropped to the ground as he did. This was something that could actually kill him.

"No!" I yelled as I reached out for the screen. He couldn't do that! Leo closed his eyes as he fell downward, the ground coming closer and closer. Tasha was going to kill me. I took in a sharp breath as Leo disappeared from view momentarily. I sighed as I saw he was now in front of the partial collider building. I forgot about geoleaping. Wait, he geoleaped! How on earth did he do that? I've been working on that for years! Scratch that, Douglas and I have been working on geoleaping since the old days. Even Marcus didn't have geoleaping. Meaning of course, my jerk of a brother had yet to figure it out. Its not possible! Leo smiled and raced inside, the cameras following his every movement. He raced in just as Adam, Bree, and Chase had that day so long ago. He copied his older brother's actions as he made a force field, launching it towards the control panel. The flashing red lights instantly stopped as the force field hit the panel, only leaving one piece of the puzzle left, the roof to collapse. Leo nodded to himself as he used his super speed to leave the building as the roof fell inward. Once he was safely outside, the screen fell black. I took in a much needed breath, letting myself fall to my knees on the ground. I let my head fall to my hands as I ran over what had just happened.

He did it. Leo actually did it. He even beat Adam, Bree, and Chase. Dr. Evans patted me on the shoulder, motioning for me to do the honors of pressing the off switch, thus, bringing Leo back. I nodded slowly, not able to wrap my mind around all of this. Not wanting to wrap my mind around all of this. I hit the button before Leo opened his eyes, pulling the glasses off slowly, readjusting to his actual surroundings instead of the simulated ones.

"So... How'd I do?" Leo asked enthusiastically. I shook my head, looking off towards the door. If I run, no one could give him bionics. I may even be able to find my missing children that taunted us all during the simulation.

"Big D? How-"

"You geoleaped. How'd you do that?" I asked, not believing what had just happened. Leo shrugged.

"I thought you said I had all abilit-"

"Douglas never created geoleaping, Leo. How'd you do it?" I asked again, trying to be as specific as I could be in a situation like this. There had to be another way. The simulator uses real life experiences, it can't come up with new abilities. It can't use actual people against him.

"Remember when you created that proton fuser?" Leo asked warily, wondering if he was answering correctly. I nodded slowly.

"Yeah, what's that got to do with anything?" I asked. I knew my genius inventions left impressions on all of us, but I didn't know Leo would still remember it to this day.

"Well, it worked. But it created a wormhole to a parallel universe. A parallel universe where I had bionics. One of my abilities was to geoleap. What's the big deal?" Leo asked. My eyes widened at the last part. How could he not see this as a big deal? This was huge!

"I said, I gave you all abilities... all the ones I knew of. You could only use those abilities I gave you. I never gave you geoleaping. You discovered that ability on your own." I explained as Dr. Evans stood up and made his way over to my step son.

"Leo, don't you see? That defies the program we created. It disproves everything we know about the molecular structure of the bionic human. You just gave us the combination to create this ability, and many more. Leo, you made a scientific breakthrough!" Dr. Evans exclaimed with a clap of his hands. I rolled my eyes at his enthusiasm. I knew ten times more about this thing than he did. Yes, the kid did figure out geoleaping, and the whole actual people in the simulator thing. But the rest I knew about. Leo looked up at Dr. Evans with wide eyes.

"Ok... do you guys have any other questions for me?" Leo asked teasingly. I nodded, remembering one key point to this simulation that just wasn't right.

"Actually, I do. How did Adam, Bree, and Chase get incorporated into the simulation? That as well, wasn't possible." I added, looking from Dr. Evans to Leo.

"Well, I was thinking about how I might have to fight against other bionics to save them, and they just you know... appeared, I guess." Leo answered with a shrug, looking confused himself. I frowned as I ran my mind over the possibilities.

"Your own imagination manipulated the simulation entirely..." I mumbled as I let the facts replay in my head. Leo had added my three bionics, and a new ability to the mix, just by thinking about it.

"Umm... you never really answered my question." Leo stated sarcastically, bringing me out of my deep thinking quest. I frowned as I thought over his statement. What was he talking about?

"Which was?" I asked. He smiled brightly

"How'd I do?" He asked. I laughed lightly. He should already know he did great just by this awesome feedback from this billionaire scientist, me.

"You... did amazing." I answered honestly. Leo's smile grew even bigger, if that was even possible.

"So? Does that mean I get bionics?" Leo asked excitedly. I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair for about the fifteenth time today, wondering this time, whether or not to take the life threatening risk of giving my step son bionics. So, I did the only logical thing that came to mind.

"Well..."
