Chapter 3 - Avalanche

3. Avalanche

(POV) Chase

"Yes we did it!" Adam cheered as we jumped into the helicopter. I just laughed, of course we did it. We get there, and get the job done. There's also the fact that we're bionic. But who's counting?

"Adam put the pelican back." Bree ordered as she saw the bird poke its head out of the bag. At least Bree was paying attention to Adam. Seriously, if someone's not watching him twenty-four seven, who knows what could happen.

"Don't you think we did good Chase?" Bree said, looking behind Adam and to me. Adam was directly in between us, but I was happy she wanted my approval.

"Yeah, the mission went great. I think Mr. Davenport might actually be proud of us this time." I said, thinking back to the weeks before. He was still coming up with lists of things we do wrong. We're teenagers, what does he expect?

"You're still on that?" Adam asked, turning to me as he did so. I just shrugged, of course I still was. I wasn't exactly over the whole thing yet. I personally think Mr. Davenport's side of the family is insane. At least I'm not related to them. Adam is Davenport's son, and Bree is Douglas'. I personally have no idea where my parents are. From the looks of it, I was taken from a nursery the day I was born. My real parents are probably still looking for me.

"Chase, Davenport hasn't criticized us about a single mission since then. We're fine." Bree pointed out in a reassuring tone. I sighed. I knew for a fact Davenport would have something against this mission.

We landed and made our way into the lab. I had been waiting for this, the moment when Mr. Davenport would tell me how good of a mission leader I was. Lately, I've felt a little unappreciated. But hopefully, things would change.

"Great execution you guys, that was one of your best missions yet. You saved that island from one of the worst tropical storms in history." Mr. Davenport said as he walked over to us.

"Big D's right you guys, you've been doing great." Leo said with a smile. I laughed, knowing he wanted some say in the congratulations.

"Yeah, and the even better part is I brought back these hairy fruits!" Adam said. He set down the bag and started to grab one out, causing a worried look to grace Mr. Davenport's face.

"Just be glad I made him put the pelican back." Bree said, a small laugh coming from me.

"With Bree's speed, and Adam's strength, this team is unstoppable! See, this just proves that speed, plus strength, equals success." Mr. Davenport continued.

"Um, excuse me. Let's not forget who put this whole thing together." I said motioning to myself. This was not happening. They had to acknowledge that I put all my time and effort into this mission.

"Oh right, let's not forget our fearless leader. Mr. Davenport." Adam said while he and Bree turned to our adoptive dad. I sighed.

"I meant me!" I yelled back.

"Chase let's just face it. Your super smarts are just no match for our hustle..." Bree left off.

"And muscle." Adam looked down at me. Would I ever be taller than him? I always find myself looking up to him.

"This isn't fair. I'm sick of these two getting all the credit just because they have super speed, and super strength." I added before my 'brother and sister' were able to derail me even more.

"Don't worry, Chase, we'll find you an ustle." Mr. Davenport concluded. I know he was trying, but at the same time, he wasn't. Adam, Bree, and Leo always thought that I was Mr. Davenport's favorite. But more and more, it seems that I can't do anything right in his eyes.

"They're the flash of the of team, but you're the glue that holds this team together. YOU'RE FLASH GLUE!" Davenport concluded. Adam and Bree snickered behind me as I headed to change out of my mission suit.

"I'm flash glue?" I asked. They nodded before heading upstairs.

"Flash glue, really?" I wondered as I changed. There was no point in me fighting. I would never really be apart of the team. They would never see it unless...

That's it! I have to prove myself! Maybe complete a mission on my own? There's tons of disasters, I'm sure I can fix one of them by myself.

I nodded to myself as I headed upstairs, seeing Leo sitting on the couch watching TV. Our mission specialist everyone. I sat down by him, my little brother not sparing me a glance. Even Leo didn't acknowledge me. Well that hurts.

**************************

Mr. Davenport called us into the lab to go over our next mission.

"Hey guys! Look at my latest invention!" Mr. Davenport called as we walked into the lab.

Leo walked up first. "What does it do?!" He asked in excitement. I rolled my eyes, Mr. Davenport always did this. He has some kind of amazing invention, but in the end, it backfires. Literally.

"I'll show you... put that cup down, and stand back!" We all watched as Mr. Davenport flipped it on. He shot it toward the cup, and it turned to ice.

"So basically it's a fancy way to make ice." Leo said unenthusiastically. I laughed.

"No, Leo. I've created the worlds' first, instant freezing machine! But I need citanium from ice burgs in the Antarctic. That, is where you guys will get it." Mr. Davenport said as he pulled it up on his cyber desk. Suddenly, a warning flashed up on the screen.

"Oh no, there's a massive storm coming. It's not safe, the mission is off." Mr. Davenport sighed. This was my chance.

"Mr. Davenport, we can do this. The storm won't hit for a few hours." I brushed off before Mr. Davenport shook his head.

"No, Chase. It's too dangerous." Mr. Davenport said as he turned to face me.

"But if we don't get it now, you might lose the citanium forever."

"I know." Mr. Davenport looked defeated. He had created something amazing, but now, it had nothing to run off of. This was how I could prove myself! Mr. Davenport walked out of the lab before I turned and began to walk back to the mission prep room. Bree put her hand on my shoulder to stop me before I could take three steps. She must have known what I was thinking.

"Stand down, flash glue. You heard the man. We're not going." Bree said in a teasing tone. She knew I hated that 'nickname'. Bree, Adam, and Leo followed Mr.Davenport upstairs, leaving me alone in the lab.

"I'll catch up with you guys later." I called no one acknowledging me, again. I got my mission suit on and got into the helicopter. This would be simple. All I had to do was collect the citanium and come back. Why would Mr. Davenport not let us go?

************************************

This blizzard is insane! No one had contacted me yet from home, so they still didn't know I was gone. I was just finishing up when I heard Mr. Davenport over my comset.

"Chase, I thought I told you not to go! What are you doing up there?!" Mr. Davenport yelled.

"It was a simple mission. And I wanted to prove that super smarts, are just as good as super speed, and super strength." I replied back with authority back. This should show them. I wasn't just this self proclaimed 'flash glue'.

"There's an avalanche headed your way, get out of there!" Mr. Davenport yelled after conversing with Bree. I was following his orders to get away from the area when I heard a cracking sound. I turned to see snow coming at me. I screamed as the snow came over me. The next thing I know, I'm trapped.

***************************************

"Chase mission log, hour three. I'm cold, I'm tired, and these pants are giving me an extreme wedgie!" I recorded, yelling the last part. It was getting to be really bad. The snow I was under had created a sort of cave. The only bad thing was I couldn't move. I could feel myself growing colder by the minute. What if they didn't come for me? What if they left me out here to die? They wouldn't do that would they?

Suddenly, I heard someone digging above my head. Thank god.

"Adam! Bree! I knew you'd come! Hurry, get me out!" I yelled through the snow. When I turned to look out the small hole though, I saw the one person I'd hopped I would never see again.

"What are you doing here?" I said to Douglas. How did he even find me?

"Saving my sons' life." He smiled back as he continued to dig me out. Not that I wasn't thankful for this, but come on. This guy was the face of evil. He created an android to fight Davenport, kill Leo, and capture us so we could be his bionic soldiers. There was no way I was trusting him.

He shoveled the last bit of snow, making enough space for me to crawl out through the hole. He reached in with his free hand, pulling me out as half my body was completely frozen. He tossed the shovel to the side, deciding to come and get it after the storm as he started to lead me to a nearby shelter.

"You're lucky I'm desperate." I muttered as we reached his makeshift home. Douglas pulled the curtains back and motioned for me to enter.

"After you." He said in fake politeness. I rolled my eyes. Was this guy serious? Didn't he know that I knew? Didn't he know I knew he wasn't really my father and neither was Mr. Davenport?

A small silence took us over as I sat down, a silence that played out for a long while. He played with his tablet as I warmed up. I can't believe I got frostbite.

"Want some soup, I went to cooking school in the 90's. It's Tuscan bean." He offered with a smile. I sat back as he moved it closer to me.

"Is it poisoned?" I asked as I took it in my hands. I didn't know what to expect. He could still want me dead for all I knew.

"Yes. I flew 10,000 miles around the world in a massive storm, and risked my life in an avalanche to rescue you, so I could then poison you." He said slowly. Well, guy does have a point. I took the soup from his hand and took a sip.

"Mm." I paused as I pulled the soup away from my mouth. "You make a pretty good soup for a diabolical maniac." I said. Douglas laughed as if I was kidding, which of course, I wasn't. "What's on the agenda today? Build some bombs? Take over a tiny country? Steal money from old ladies?" I asked sarcastically. Not that any of that was actually out of his range, he did capture us.

"No!" He hissed, almost offended. "Well, not in that order." Douglas answered. Wow, who would have guessed. "I'm kidding. I'm not all bad. I think you have the wrong idea about me. Chase, have you been feeling unappreciated lately?" Douglas asked suddenly. I sat back in thought. How could he have known that?

"They're my family. That's what families do." I tried to reason. I knew the real reason they treated me like this, they though I was completely incapable.

"Yes, Chase. Families take you out of the family business' and take your kids from you." Douglas retorted. I rolled my eyes.

"When are the two of you going to grow up?"

"I'LL GROW UP WHEN HE GROWS UP!" He yelled. He quickly took a deep breath and came over to sit by me.

"Let's get back to the point. The only reason I've done this, is because he's always taken the credit for everything. I mean, haven't you ever had a sibling who's outshone you constantly? Chase, I know how hard its been for you. How they're always taking the credit for everything when you've clearly done the majority of the work. They don't give you the credit you deserve for your work, but I can..." Douglas explained, forcing me to turn and look at him. He was completely serious.

"Chase, I can make it so you have all three abilities. You could be stronger than Adam, and faster than Bree." Douglas said as he came closer. I will admit, it did sound appealing, but could I do that to my family?

"How could you do that?" I asked. He paused as he looked me over, his eyes stopped as he spotted where my chip was in my neck.

"You were the third one. By the time I got to you, I was able to make capacity for upgrades. But then Donny ripped you away before I was able to continue my research." Douglas said. He got up and began to pace, me following and standing up.

"You could do that?" I asked, trying to reassure myself before I got into something that wasn't truly thought through.

"Yes. But I don't exactly have the utilities to help us." Douglas said hinting at something. "If you join me, I can give you everything you could ever imagine."

"Alright Mr. Davenport, I'm in. We can use Davenport's lab. It's Wednesday which means... Something's getting waxed." I said as I shuttered at the thought of Mr. Davenport. Scary.

"You know, if you want, you can call me dad." Douglas suggested. I frowned. Did he really not know?

"No, I'm good."

*****************************************

"Chase! I'm so glad you're okay!" Bree squealed as she ran over to me. She wrapped her arms around me before she realized who was standing next to me. She pulled away hesitantly.

"Chase..." Bree whispered as she put two and two together.

"Huh, it's evil uncle daddy!" Adam said when he stepped into the lab. Davenport looked betrayed, he even thought I was going through with this.

"It's too late Donny, the download is complete. Chase will now have all three bionic abilities!" Douglas yelled in triumph. I smiled evil as Bree looked at me in disgust. She backed away and went to stand next to her uncle, Donald Davenport.

"Actually, that's not it. That USB drive you're holding is completely useless." I said. Bree's smile returned as Douglas looked more furious.

"Then what just took an hour and a half to download?" He yelled.

"A list of everything Adam's ever eaten." I said with a smirk. Douglas was furious.

"Not my incredible edibles!" Adam gasped. Douglas slammed the flash drive down and got out a device that could probably kill me.

"Watch out!" I said as I pushed Leo behind me. I froze Douglas. He will forever be caught in a stance of readiness. Bree sighed as I turned to smile at her.

"That was amazing Chase. You make a great double agent." Davenport said as he patted me on the back.

"And... I got the citanium." Davenport's face lit up.

"Money, money, money, money." Davenport sang as he did a dance. When he noticed we were watching he stopped.

"I mean. Thank you." He said as seriously as possible. I laughed as turned to change out of my mission suit and warm up. Adam raced ahead of me after Leo and Davenport. Bree stopped me before we could get in the elevator with them.

"Wait, I need to talk to you for a second." Bree said as she stopped me and pulled me back into the lab.

"What?" I asked as we sat on the stools in front of each other.

"Chase you almost died out there! I thought you were dead! How could you leave us thinking that?" Bree yelled at me. She stood up slowly and put her hands on her hips. Well, she looked mad now.

"Bree, you guys were treating me like I wasn't even part of the team. Why would I tell you where I was going?" I yelled back. I stood up and took a step closer to her.

"Chase, I'm sorry about that. When you left I realized why you had left and it... It killed me. I don't like knowing that I was able to do that to you." Bree said her voice fading with every word. I started to worry that I hurt her feelings.

"Bree I'm sorry-" I started.

"Chase you shouldn't be sorry. I'm sorry that me and Adam made you feel that way. I didn't think that you would actually go out there and get it by yourself in the middle of a giant storm." Bree was crying by now. I took another step forward and hugged her. She laid her head on my chest and started crying harder.

"Bree, it's okay. I'm here. I didn't die. We captured Douglas and... I don't know what else to say." I rambled as Bree started to laugh. I smiled. I love it when she laughs.

"Come on. We better go see what Leo did." Bree said as she whipped her eyes and started walking to the elevator. I smiled as I followed her. Maybe she did care about me the way I cared for her.

As we entered the elevator, I looked to Douglas frozen in the ice block. Hopefully all of this was over.

"I'm really happy you're okay, Chase. I don't know what I would do without you." Bree said as the elevator rang. We stepped out into the kitchen to see everyone standing around another two ice blocks.

"I don't know what I'd do without you either, Bree." I whispered as we walked over to the others. What had Leo done now?
