Chapter 9: Gifts

Aerlinniel POV

Still holding my arm, Legolas asks, "You're a Princess?"

I stay silent for a moment. He is probably mad at me, maybe I should have told him before. I just didn't want anyone to treat me differently.

"I-- I'm sorry. I just...I didn't want anyone treating me differently. I know, I should have told you. I am so sorry." I apologise, praying to the Valar that he is not mad at me.

I hear him sigh. I turn away from him, but he turns me back around.

"There is no need to apologise. Even though I wish you would have told me, I understand why you didn't tell me." He tells me.

"You're not mad at me?" I question.

"Of course not." He says, giving me a hug. I am grateful because I really needed one. He then backs out of the hug and hooks his arm with mine as we start walking. "Come on, you've been through a lot. You should get some rest."

"Thank you, Legolas. For not being mad at me and for the hug. I really needed that." I thank him.

"Any time. I am always here if you need anything." Legolas tells me.

"And I am always here for you if you ever need anything."

When everyone is ready, we are lead outside. By the sound of it, we are near a river. We are waiting for Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel. When they arrive, we are each given a cloak.

As the cloaks are being put on us Lord Celeborn says, "Never before have we clad strangers in the garb of our own people. May these cloaks help shield you from unfriendly eyes."

Lady Galadriel then gives out gifts.

"My gift for you, Legolas, is a bow of the Galadhrim. Worthy of the skill of our woodland kin." She tells him and then stands in front of me.

"Aranel Aerlinniel, this is for you." She says, putting something on my head. "It is your circlet. I was going to come back to the Hidden Kingdom to give it to you when you turned one hundred. Since I did not give it to you then, I am giving it to you now. Wear it proudly."

Merry and Pippin are next, "These are the daggers of the Noldorin. They have already seen service in war. Do not fear, young Peregrin Took. You will find your courage. And for you, Samwise Gamgee, Elven rope made of hithlain."

"Thank you, my Lady. Have you run out of those nice, shiny daggers?" Sam asks her. But Lady Galadriel does not answer him and moves on to Gimli.

"And what gift would a Dwarf ask of the Elves?" Lady Galadriel asks him.

"Nothing. Except to look upon the lady of the Galadhrim one last time for she is more fair than all the jewels beneath the earth." Gimli tells her and Lady Galadriel gives a small laugh. Actually. There was one thing. No, no, I couldn't. It's quite impossible. Stupid to ask."

~~~
We start to get everything we need into the boats that we are using to go down the river.
While I am helping Sam, I hear Legolas say, "Lembas, Elvish waybread. One small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man."
"How many did you eat?" Merry asks Pippin.
"Four." Pippin answers and I smile. I love Hobbits.
We all get on the boats and take off. We are taking three boats. I am in a boat with Legolas and Gimli. All is silent for a while, until Gimli speaks.
"I have taken my worst wound at this parting, having looked my last upon that which is fairest. Henceforth I will call nothing fair unless it be her gift to me."
"What was her gift?" Legolas asks him.
Gimli replies, "I asked for one hair from her golden head. She gave me three."
The rest of the way is pretty much silent. We stop somewhere to rest. I lay down and I am left to my thoughts. I have a feeling that something bad is going to happen soon.
