Chapter 3: Questioning Age

"Alright, class, we have a new classmate joining us for the meanwhile," our teacher announced excitedly to us, as if expecting us to share her enthusiasm. Welp, sorry, Miss, but us Tobot Pilots don't share it at all. Not after the shock we had been given yesterday....
I inhaled softly as I leaned on my chair, noting Hana and Semo's similar reactions. It had hit us HARD, especially Hana. After all, Duri was his twin. They had been in the womb for the same amount of time, and they had been through so much together... So to be betrayed so publicly... I could tell that Hana was trying hard to move past that, but he was failing horribly.
But still, I had to wonder, who would join our class near the summer vacation? It didn't make sense at all....
That was enough to drag my attention to the newcomer as he stepped into the room.
And I nearly did a double take. He looked so... So...!
"Please introduce yourself," our teacher smiled at him, allowing him to relax his shoulders as he faced us.
His first sentence to us would forever stay in my mind.
"Annyeonghaseyo. I'm Kory Char. I hope we get along during the short time I am here!" he then bowed towards us, adjusting his glasses shyly.
We made eye contact for the briefest moment, emerald green orbs meeting brown eyes, and I thought for that certain millisecond that he- He had a familiar gaze.
I frowned in disbelief as I shook myself out of it. What was that? Why was I reminded of... Why was I reminded of someone...?
"Well, let's see. Maybe you can sit near the window, behind Hana," she suggested.
"Sounds good to me," Kory smiled, walking to the seat casually.
I blinked. Something about his posture was familiar too... What was this? This emotion in my heart.... Was it... Recognition?
He then bowed at Hana, a sign of his respect, before he sat on his seat, looking out the window.
"Alright, class, let's continue our lesson, shall we?"
"Yes, Seongsaengnim!" we all chorused. Hana, Semo and I had blank tones in our words, but I noticed that Kory seemed out of it as well. It seems like he wasn't the type to care much about lessons.
I blinked. Somehow, that fit him I suppose. The green jacket, white shirt underneath with a cross on it (a devout Christian?), brown pants and brown shoes showed that he didn't have much of a fashion sense either.
Out of nowhere, a small smile made its way on my face. Kory seemed like a good person, despite all that. Plus, I found his seemingly non-existent fashion sense adorable.
"Ya, Dingyo, what's the matter?" Semo leaned in to whisper to me, a confused look spread across his face.
"It's nothing, Semo," I whispered back. "It's just that Kory's fashion sense seems worse than yours."
"Excuse me?" he mock-gasped quietly. "Hana has worse."
"As if. Yours is worse than Hana and Officer Oh's combined," I smirked upon seeing his offended look.
"How cruel," he pouted, but allowed a smile to grace his face. "Let's go ask him later on about it then."
"Sounds like a plan," I grinned. "I'm sure his is worse that yours."
"A bet then? Loser has to wash the other's Tobot," he challenged, grinning all the while.
"Deal," I laughed softly, noting the smile on Hana's face as well. It seems like we had snapped him out of it. That was great.
After that, we focused on the lesson, noting, writing, the usual. It was tiring, but I was only able to focus by reminding myself that this was nothing.
After all, Duri couldn't be here with us. The least we could do was gain knowledge to get him back.
So we could apologise.
That was enough to motivate me, because in the end, none of us had known about his problem. We were all to blame at some point for what happened to him.
Duri, we will rescue you no matter what.

Looking out the window, I exhaled, letting the morning sun touch my forehead. My eyes were focused on the lesson, but my mind was elsewhere.
To be frank, I was busy recalling what had happened before Acnee had beaten me. Before I met Nebok-hyung again. The lessons... Well, it came in and just stuck to my brain, mentioning something about Maths. That was my forte, being a programmer and all that, so I didn't have much to worry about.
Anyway, it had been the day before the reveal. A Sunday, thus a church day. Normally I would go to the morning service, but with the preparation for the exposing proving to be a huge workload, I had been forced to push it back.
Well, it turned out to be a good thing, since I had found it particularly taxing. The evidence had not added up, and I had been given WAY too many assignments from the usual companies, so I was an irritated mess when I arrived at church that day.
Somehow, though, it was kinda deserted. Only a few people were scattered here and there, mostly single adults. None of them came in groups. Sorta like me. It felt like this time was not a time most people would find ideal to praise God's name.
And that just put me off even more. I knew more than anyone that we could praise Him at any time of the day. I've been doing that for the past year; praying for guidance in the dark times.
Rubbing my forehead, I had decided to just let it be, choosing a seat near the back as always. The hood was up, since I didn't want anyone to recognise me, least of all Acnee's henchmen, like Angela and Huijuk, who came here as well.
However, my eyes then caught the confessional near my spot.
Normally, I would have just let it be, but at the same time, I was tired. I missed my brother so much...
I inhaled once more. It had felt like an eternity had passed since that fateful night. I had been bottling things up like a madman, only venting when Aruki and Makho told me to. Yet it still ate away at me. The guilt. The longing.
It had piled up on me. And it hurt so so much.
And I have committed sins. Even if it was for the better good, I knew that I couldn't justify my actions in any way.
After mulling over the pros and cons, as I always did, I eventually decided to just do it. Getting up from the seat, my feet moved towards the visitor's end, slipping in before I closed it.
"Welcome there, young man. I am Pastor Choi. Have you come here to clear your conscience?" the pastor on the other end gently inquired me. His tone implied that he was quite worried that a kid my age was here.
Well, he clearly didn't know much about how it was in the real world.
But then again, he seemed kinda nice. He was willing to listen to me, even if it was his job.
So I exhaled, letting my tension out, "Well... I miss my family so much. I want to go back, but I can't... Not until I get someone arrested... But I still miss them. I miss Oppa, Semo, Obochi, Dingyo, Ogong, Ondol, Limo, X, Z, Y... Nebok-hyung..."
My tone wavered here. I was unsure how I felt about him. On one side, he HAD let me drop into the ocean. He had made his choice there. That scar hadn't healed completely yet.
On the other hand, I know that he had been emotionally manipulated into it by Acnee. Dr. M was known for the many manipulations she had done, but I was still fighting her on my own to stop her. To help her see the light.
That's why, in a way, I had to thank Nebok-hyung. Without his decision, I would have never been given the chance to fight my other side. We could have continued on fighting, unaware that all this time, Acnee was someone watching us in plain sight.
And I would have never broken out of my depression.
On the opposite side of the coin, though, it was because of both of us that Y got captured and turned against X and Z. Even if Aruki and Makho keep on telling me that it wasn't my fault, I knew deep down that I was to blame. If I hadn't trusted Nebok-hyung so blatantly, perhaps this could have been avoided.
However, if I'm to be frank, Y was the main reason why I'm going up against Acnee. Even if she had outnumbered me at the beginning in terms of resources and brains in her little "game", I had grown over the year. I had learnt a lot from my mistakes. I had trained myself.
So thank you, Nebok-hyung...
Y, I will rescue you, even if it takes my life. I owe that to you.
"Young man?" the pastor snapped me out of my thoughts. "Do you have anything else to say?"
"... Not really," I shook my head, getting up as I spoke. "Thank you so much for listening to me."
"Of course. May God bless you. I hope you reunite with your family soon," he stated, a kind tone underlying his words.
A smile had made its way to my face, "May God bless you too, Sir." before I stepped out of the confessional. The irritation in my heart seemed to have disappeared. I had felt so much better. That meeting was truly magical.
I stopped there. Magical, huh? It sure felt that way.
With that, I left the church, the fire of determination stewing in my heart.
Now, I was ready to take down Acnee. The plan Nebok-hyung had suggested yesterday had been put into motion. If everything went smoothly... If we could find that last piece of evidence... Then we could stop her reign of terror forever.
Turning my head to face the board once more, I then found Oppa right in front of me.
A bittersweet smile slipped onto my face. I missed Hana so much. I missed my Oppa so much.
My eyes moved to see the other two in the class, and I had to look back out to hide the small tears that had fallen out for a minute there.
I will prevail above Acnee's tricks. We will win this battle, and keep Daedo City safe.
No matter the cost.

"Guys, we're here!" I waved as Ondol and I stepped into their classroom, smiling as per usual. Even if I didn't feel happy, after that revelation yesterday, I knew that I had to stay positive for everyone. If anything, I owed it to them.
"Oh Ogong-ah, Ondol-ah!" Semo waved back, a pure smile on his face. One that I never expected to see so soon after yesterday.
I blinked, tilting my head. What was going on? How was he so... Happy? After Duri's funeral, it took months for Semo to finally have a smile on his face, so how-
My eyes then caught the person who was conversing with Dingyo. He seemed new, but it looked like he had warmed up to them straight away.
"Did your brother actually do that?! Did he actually try to tickle you?!" Dingyo cackled.
"Yeah!" the new guy grinned. "He was all, 'Stop doing that, Kory!' But it was wayyyy too late for that!"
"Ooooh, whoever incurred your wrath must have a death wish," Hana burst out laughing.
"I know right?!" he agreed. "It's not like Noah-hyung didn't know me all that well."
"Well, he got the bitter medicine he deserved either way, so it's fine," Semo chipped in, making the four dissolve into giggles. Hana seemed the happiest among them, which kinda blew my mind. Who was this dude, and how did he manage to make them laugh like this?
Hana then noticed us, and he gave us the warm smile that I never realised I missed, the warm Cha Hana smile, "Guys! Meet our new classmate, Kory Char!"
"Annyeong!" He got up just to bow to us. "I'm Kory Char. Nice to meet you!"
"I'm Dokgo Ogong then," I greeted, putting my hands in my suspenders. "Nice to meet you!"
"And I'm his dongsaeng, Dokgo Ondol!" Ondol grinned. "You seem cool, Kory-hyung!"
"Ah, it's nothing," he waved it off, adjusting his glasses. "I just immigrated to Korea from America. My brother and I are Korean-Americans, but our parents decided to move back here."
"That sounds awesome," Suho's voice wafted in, making us turn to see him and Nokwon, who had moved to Daedo with his grandma temporarily for mental support, leaning on the wall with smiles on their faces.
"That's Guk Suho and Kim Nokwon," Semo quickly introduced them as they walked over. "They're good friends of ours."
"Nice to meet you! I'm Kory Char," he gave them this warm smile that-
I stopped. Something about that smile reminded me of Duri...
"Guk Suho imnida!" Suho flushed as he took his hand and shook it.
Nokwon just waved and smiled, "Kim Nokwon, as they said. Did you just move in as well, Kory?"
"Well, I suppose you can say that," Kory sunk his hands into his jacket, sheepishly smiling as well. "Noah-hyung said that I would be moving to another city soon, so yeah..."
"You'll only be here for a while?" Ondol tilted his head. He seemed disappointed.
"Sorry, Ondol," Kory patted his head, rubbing it affectionately afterwards. "But hey, don't you worry. We can keep in contact right?"
"Yeah!" his eyes were so bright, I nearly lost my mind over how happy I was. He was a miracle worker!
"You don't have to," a new voice cut in rudely.
I could have sworn Kory's eyes grew cold as we saw a trio of unfamiliar people approaching. Seems like they had known Duri, cause Hana, Semo and Dingyo froze.
"After all, they're all Tobots Pilots. Because of them, Duri went to the dark side," the leader of the group hissed, eyes cold as ice.
We all stiffened at that, excluding Nokwon and Suho, who hadn't met Duri before. Hana's tremors started up again. Dingyo's fists tightened. Semo looked down, doing the same as Dingyo. I bit my lip so hard I tasted blood. Ondol's eyes grew watery. Suho's ears went red.
"Hey, leave them alone, you meanies!" Nokwon growled, red eyes showing ferocity in them.
"Why should we?" another asked, bitterness clear in his tone. "Because of them and their parents, Duri hates us all now."
"Especially his twin," I saw Hana flinch at that statement, eyes growing wide in fear. "He was the reason he got that sickness right? He should have just told their parents!"
"Ya, it's not like you didn't contribute to it," Nokwon argued back just as heatedly. "I heard that you always favoured being with Hana over Duri due to how unlikable he was. You never wanted to know the real Duri!"
"Why you little-" A hand reached out to hurt him.
"Don't. You. Dare," a hand gripped his tightly, preventing him from doing anything. He winced in pain as he, and the rest of us, saw Kory glaring at him.
"K-Kory!" Semo's jaw dropped. "W-What are you-"
You could have sworn there was literal venom dripping from Kory's voice, "I can understand if you blame them, but hitting people when you're just as wrong is hypocritical, you know."
"W-What did you say?!" the person growled, literal fire in his eyes.
The bespectacled male only scoffed, "I've dealt with bullies like you. You guys were on the same team as him, and yet you never picked up the signs? How pathetic. How can you even blame the Pilots if you yourselves were clueless? I bet that you're only like this because you lost the soccer championship a few months back. In the first two matches, nonetheless. If you think that treating the Pilots like this would bring whoever this dude is back, then you are wrong. So, so wrong. So leave before I get serious, because believe me, you don't want to see me serious. I don't want to get serious either. I want to save my energy instead of wasting it on people like you."
The two of them exchanged intense looks before the other guy hissed, "F-Fine!" and stomped off, with the other two trailing from behind.
Once they left, Kory turned back to face us, an apologetic smile on his face, "Sorry for that. I couldn't stand on the sidelines while you were being picked on. Are you okay, Nokwon?"
"Y-Yeah!" Nokwon's smile filled the room like the sun. "Thank you so much for helping me! You were awesome!"
His cheeks went red, "It's fine. I-I just did what was right."
"No, that was absolutely brilliant!" Suho shook him back and forth, grinning like a crazy person. "You really outdid yourself, Kory! Respect!"
"A-Ahh!" he flushed even harder, puffing up his cheeks in a valiant attempt to stop them. "I-It's really nothing!"
The rest of us just burst out laughing, sharing smiles before the bell rang, signalling the continuation of class. We then quickly said our farewells and set off for our own classes.
Kory seemed like a really nice kid. Perhaps he was a godsend to us grieving Pilots?
... Nah, that can't be. How would he have known that we needed help?
I just waved the thoughts away as I headed back to my class with Suho and Nokwon, who were in the same direction. Maybe I could ask Kory later.
The day seemed faster than normal, mainly because I couldn't stay awake after the restless night I had, but when the dismissal bell rang, I felt much more energized than before. This was proven as I walked down to Hana, Semo and Dingyo's class, a light step in my movements.
Apparently, Suho, Nokwon and Ondol had thought the same, because when I got there, they were already waiting outside.
"Hey guys!" Hana grinned as the four of them stepped out as well, all smiles now. It felt good to have them happy again, though I do have to wonder how Kory did it.
It almost felt like he was Duri.... The one who could make them laugh.
Wait that was ridiculous. Duri was a bad guy now. How could he be here as Kory? If he had been Duri, he wouldn't have defended Nokwon.
Argh, this is so confusing! I feel a headache coming!
"Hyung?"
I looked down to Ondol, whose innocent navy eyes, just like mine, stared into my orbs, "Yeah, Ondol?"
"What are you thinking of?" he asked. It seemed like if I tried to lie, he would know right away just by staring at me.
I just sighed, "It just feels strange to me..."
Ondol blinked once more, "What's strange?"
I frowned a bit, "Kory. How did he get so close to them?"
Ondol shrugged nonchalantly, "I guess he's just like Haeil-hyung. Like, at first you think he's just a normal person, but once you talk to him, he's a person with a golden heart."
"True true," I chuckled back at him. Thinking about it, Tak Haeil was really something. He resembled Kory so much.
Just then, a new voice called out, "Hoiiiii, Kory!!!"
At that, his head did a near-180º turn, a smile on his face, "NOAH-HYUNG!" He rushed over and hugged the male who was approaching us.
Eh?
I was sure that the rest of us were as stunned upon seeing his brother, mainly cause this guy looked like a near mirror of Kory. He was sporting a black hoodie, wearing a dark blue cap over his light blue eyes, similar to my and Ondol's, red jeans that seemed as red as blood (AHA.), and purple sneakers. It made him look like a magnet.
I snickered mentally. This was adorable, but at the same time, he looked cool and handsome- Wait hold up what did I just say- Did I just call Noah hot?
Oh God, please don't let Ondol notice. If he does, it'll be the end of me...
Thankfully, it seemed like he hadn't. Instead, he was focused on Kory's older brother, "Hi there!"
"Yo," Noah waved at us coolly. "I'm Noah Kim. Nice to meet you all."
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Hana and Semo's eyes squint slightly. Hana's caramel irises were filled with scrutiny and doubt. Semo's cocoa orbs had suspicion in them. What was up with them?
"Noah-hyung goes to the high school around here," Kory explained to us enthusiastically, eyes lighting up in happiness. It felt like he admired Noah a lot, judging by his proud tone. "The two of us and our parents usually travel around the world whenever they're not busy in the office, but they decided to move back to Daedo City because they missed being in Korea."
"That's just about right!" Noah nodded along, ruffling Kory's hair before continuing, "Kory and I are used to taking care of each other, so our parents usually give us a place to stay while they work. Thankfully, this one time they managed to find a place big enough for all four of us to run around like headless chickens."
"I can understand that," Dingyo giggled, but I sensed an underlying doubt in her words. "When I moved all the way to the countryside, I found the place better than my old one in the city."
"You all moved?" Kory blinked. He looked genuinely confused now. "I thought you guys would stay in the city since that's where your school is."
"Well it's just some of us who moved to the countryside," Hana shrugged, scratching his cheek with his index finger. "Semo, Dingyo and I did to make space for Tobot stuff."
"Tobot stuff?" For a moment, I thought something weird flashed in both their eyes before Kory asked that question. "Oh, you mean the reason why those guys were so angry at you."
"Yeah..." Semo nodded. The mood went somber, as we all remembered why he wasn't here with us...
Noah blinked, befuddlement now clear on his face, "Kory, do you know what they're talking about?"
"I don't think they want to talk about it," I heard him whisper to him quietly, replied with an "Oh..." of understanding from Noah. Something in his eyes spoke a different story, though.
I frowned internally. This was strange. I had a feeling that these two were hiding something from us.
But what?
"Anyway, let's go, Kory. Mom and Dad want us home soon," the capped teen ruffled Kory's hair once more.
Hana's classmate could only sigh before he turned to us, "I'll be back tomorrow, so don't you worry. I won't let those guys go near you again."
"Ah, genchana yo (It's fine)! You don't have to," Suho shook his head frantically.
"Oh, you don't know half the story," Kory snorted, a smile playing on his face. "I was known as the Whistleblower or Detective back in the US. It's just part of the job I suppose."
"That's kinda sweet," Ondol grinned. "You're defending other people who need help. That's cool!"
"Well, there was a time when I couldn't save anyone," Kory's eyes went glassy briefly. "So I want to make up for it."
"It's okay, Kory," Noah hugged the younger one before he grinned at us. "I thank you so much for being Kory's friend while he's here. He's a nice person once you get to know him."
"That's true!" Nokwon nodded, a chirp in his tone. "He stopped someone from hitting me!"
At that, Noah stopped for a moment.
Then, he facepalmed, "Oh my God, Kory. Please try to stay out of trouble."
Kory could only shrug half-heartedly, "Can't do anything about it, Noah-hyung."
"Aigooo, it won't kill you."
"It can if it wants to. I have a trouble magnet for stuff like this."
"As if you do."
"You're an example."
"Oh shut your trap."
And thus, the two of them left bickering like a bunch of children, leaving us there sweatdropping with all the might we could muster.
They seemed more like how Hana and Duri had been, but at the same time, they had some respect and love for the other. That was kinda sweet, and I knew more than anyone that sibling bonds couldn't be as fragile as that.
Not even Hana and Duri's.
"Alright guys, let's head back and get a strategy together to bring Duri back," I turned to the others, a determined look on my face.
The others all nodded, their own orbs reflecting their hearts' deepest desires.
Duri, don't you worry. We will stop you once and for all.

"Well, well, well, look who finally decided to show up," Duri lazily rolled his eyes as we stood in front of him, our Tobots by our side while Y and some Raptorbots with him. "This is quite the scene. What, do you think you're the heroes of this story? Ha, pathetic."
"Duri, we may have hurt you in the past, but it's not too late to let us help you now," Semo begged him earnestly. He really looked hesitant to fight Duri, proven when he had gotten over his initial shock first (I think that they mentioned that it was one of Acnee's robots... Apparently they had defeated her... Huh.) ahead of Uncle Doun, Hana, Limo, Ogong, Ondol and Dingyo.
He scoffed, "Wow, so neat Semo. You think that this will help you get me back? Why would I even go back to you? Especially him."
There was so much hatred and rage in his tone as he looked at Uncle Doun, who seemed shocked upon seeing the anger.
"You know, the counselor kept on telling me to tell my family," he chuckled darkly. "But one of them didn't care a single bit for me. He only wanted the perfect family. With Omoni gone, you never wanted to look at me. It didn't help that I was a useless person... In the end, it was my family, my closest people who did this all to me, so how can anyone tell me to tell you? Opening up about mental illnesses is already hard enough, but to the people who were the reason it happened... You people are really oblivious and horrible... That's why I promise that you will regret every single thing you've done to me."
Hana's face, if it wasn't already pale, was now a sheet of paper, "D-Duri..."
My ears went red in guilt. It was all our faults for being so oblivious... If we had been more attentive, then maybe it would have ended otherwise. Maybe Duri would still be with us...
Duri just scoffed, "Ah, whatever. This is stupid. Let's just end it here. Y, Raptorbots, make sure you end them painfully."
"As if we'll let that!" Semo disagreed, eyes glowing with his feelings of determination. "We will stop you!"
"No matter the cost, we will prevail!" I declared loudly, just like how I would in taekwondo practice.
"Let's do this guys! We can beat him!" Nokwon turned to the others, trying to rally them up. His determination seemed to seep into them as well, as I saw their postures change. It looked more energized now. More positive.
Semo, Nokwon and I shared a secret grin. We had done it! We had gotten them to join in the fight!
"Well, I guess that we're on defence duty then," an unfamiliar voice chuckled out.
"Huh?" all of us, Duri included, blinked. Who-
SLASH!
The next thing we knew, one of the Raptorbots was on the ground, a bronze knife of sorts embedded in it.
Duri's eyes widened, not in mockery, but this time in shock, PURE shock, "Y-You're-!"
Another robotic screech echoed, and another one was down, this time with a masked person standing on top of it, "This is kinda pathetic."
"Heh, you have no room to say that, you know," another masked person pulled the blade out of the Raptorbot, making it slump, no longer active. "You're worse."
"Excuse me?" the first one sounded offended as they kicked it into inactivity. "How can you say that?"
"Heeeeeh," the second one mocked. "Are you denying it?"
"Oh shut up idiot."
"Ehhhhh, how cruel of you."
"W-Who are you?" Uncle Limo spoke up, looking just as perplexed as the rest of us. In fact, when I look back later, it would seem like we had questions marks flying all over the place.
The two of them looked back at us, and we saw their masks.
One of them had an eye mask designed like a USB, and used a masker to cover up the bottom part of their face. All I could see was the pair of eyes, though I couldn't find the irises. The other had a wooden ark painted on theirs, and they had opted for the same style as their friend. Huh, strange...
"Just call me Programmer," the one with the USB mask spoke. "He's Ark. We're here to help you. Don't ask any more questions if you want Y to return to you."
"Will it work?" Uncle Doun asked, finally speaking up ever since he arrived at the battlefield.
If the mask didn't cover anything up, I was sure that Programmer would be smiling, "Of course. We can fight them together."
"T-Thank you so much for helping us!" Officer Oh bowed to them, making Ark laugh softly, "No way, we're even. It's nothing."
"We are?" Dingyo blinked. "Since when?"
"Less talk, more action. Don't ask those kind of questions," Programmer cut in , a serious tone on. "These Raptorbots are not to be underestimated."
"Right," Hana nodded, and the rest of us followed suit as we all got ready. It was time to get serious.
"GIGA SEVEN, INTEGRATION!"
"W/C/R, Transformation!"
And so, the battle began.

"This is ridiculous, Duri!" I screamed at the laptop, rage evident in my tone. "How could you retreat halfway?!"
"Lady Sora, you know as much as I do that my real self is not to be underestimated!"
"I know that! But still!"
"You make it sound easy, but my real self and his new buddy had taken out all the Raptorbots! If we had let it continue on, then they would have found out about you!"
"Okay, that makes sense, but still!"
"Please use your brain, Lady Sora! This is not the time to let your vengeance against my real self cloud you!"
I groaned, rubbing my head. This felt so tiring. It felt like he was pushing me to my limits.
"Lady Sora?"
"... I feel better now. Thank you, Duri."
"No problem. Anyway, are we moving on to Plan B?"
"Indeed we are," there was malice in my tone. "It's time to corner Cha Duri once and for all."
