11.

Upon entering the suspect's unit, both detectives Fred and Al saw a quite surprising sight.

They saw the black bag-pack lying on the the floor.

But what really caught both of the detectives attention is the scribbles of blood on the bed.

On the plain white bedcover, there's an image of an INVERTED CROSS painted in BLOOD. There are words too, also written in BLOOD: "LEX TALIONIS".

Fred scratched and wagged his head. "Fuckin' riddles again. LEX TALIONIS, and an inverted cross. It's clear Al. That son of a bitch is an occult psychopath!"

Al was squeezing his chin while seriously gazing on the words written in blood and the inverted cross on top of it. He then uttered, "EYE FOR AN EYE.. A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.."

Fred, with serious face, curiously stared towards Al and asked with a curious tone, "What's that?!"

Al replied, "Lex talionis literally means as the LAW of RETALIATION."

"Okay ... Einstein... I really can't fuckin' get it.. okay? Enlighten me, Al." Fred uttered.

Al replied, "In simple language Fred, it's an 'eye for an eye' ideology. The principle is, that the repercussion or compensation of any crime is to be penalized to a similar degree of injury that had been done."

Fred was still puzzled even right after Al explained everything about it. "Oh. Okay.", he sighed and then continued, "... what about this upside down cross here? Would you concur that this is an event of an occult practice of goddamn psycho?"

"I don't know. I really can't conclude. I think I need Kelly here... call him from the next room, Fred.", Al commanded with so much urgency.

(Fred called Kelly)

After Dr. Kelly Spencer went inside the suspect's room, Fred just stood up and listened carefully at Kelly and Al's conversation.

Dr. Kelly saw the scribbles written in blood on the plain white bedcover. She sighed, and then uttered, "Eye for an eye... The Code of Hammurabi"

Al replied, "Yeah, I already got that. What I can't decode is this inverted cross here. Can you share any thoughts?"

"That's a St. Peter's Cross. You can see that kind of cross at the back of the Papal Seat of the Pope in Vatican. It's a symbol of St. Peter's martyrdom. When the Roman soldiers crucified him for preaching the gospel of Christ, he chose to be crucified in an upside down position as a symbol of humility towards God.", Kelly intelligently uttered.

Fred interrupted, "So this ain't an occult fuckin' thing... that's what you're saying Kelly? Are you implying that this fuckin' wacko is preaching?!"

Kelly just wagged her head slowly and gave no answer.

Al sarcastically grinned a bit, "Martyrdom.", he sighed and then continued, "He is not preaching Fred."

Fred was pissed off, "Then what the fuck is this Al? Cause it's ain't funny, Al. For me he's just a fuckin' psycho that I want to hunt down. I want to put a fuckin' bullet on his brain!"

"Cool it Fred.", Kelly tried to calm Fred who obviously was now burned out.

Al gazed at Fred with a blank stare and then rebuked his partner, "'IMPULSIVENESS IS THE ENEMY OF DEEP THINKING', remember that my friend, alright?"

Fred turned his head down, and just nodded.

Al continued and then looked towards Fred and then to Kelly, "He ain't preaching. I believe he is PUNISHING."

Kelly curiously asked, "What made you think of that?"

"Remember how he reffered his WORK towards Dante's 9 circles of Hell. You said to me before we entered this room, that Danté divided THE DIVINE COMEDY into three parts: The Seven Stages Heaven, The Seven Deadly Sins in Purgatory and and the Nine Circles of HELL. He referred the latter rather than the former nor the middle. He's pointing us towards JUDGMENT. HELL is the place for torment... Judgement.. Punishment.. He is killing people, but he wants to justify his work as a work of God. I think, he's thinking that what he is doing is a work of God and HE WANTS JUSTIFY HIMSELF as a VESSEL of God's wrath towards a specific sin."

The room was filled with silence after Al's convincing parlance.

But then the phone from the suspect's unit began to ring and broke the silence.

Everyone looked at each other's face - curious on who might be this caller and at the same time, hesitant on who shall answer the phone.

Al gave the signal, "Fred... answer it and I'll record it."

Al pulled a recoring device on his coat pocket; Fred answered the phone.

Tension began to rise at everyone's nerves.

Fred put it on a speaker mode; Al turned on the recording device.

Fred tried to compose himself and then spoke , "Hello, who's this?"

A man replied with a muffled and husky voice. "I am the one you're all looking for, Detective Fred Sullivan..." the man paused for a second then continued, "Truly a spark can create a flame.. would you agree, Detective Al?"

He talked slow yet clear on every words. His tone was relaxed and composed. He knew who he's talking to - and that gave both detectives Fred and Al, puzzled thoughts and feelings .

Kelly.
Al.
Fred.

All of them were all shocked at the caller's answer. Heartbeat went faster than fast.
