7: The Motive
|Bucharest, Romania|
A few hours later, Maria and I went to the garage to get the vehicles that Chase sent to us. "Remember you have 23A". Maria said, tossing me my car keys. "Got it". I nodded to her. I got in my car and turned on my earpiece. "Alright, Maria, can you hear me"? I asked as I started the engine. "Loud and clear". She said. I turned on my GPS and typed in the location of the first warehouse. While Maria typed in the location of the second one.
"Don't forget, if you see him, just shoot him and take the documents. He's most likely alone, so it should be easy". She said. "Okay, I'll see you at the motel. Search every room in that warehouse". I told her as I turned off my earpiece, and backed out of the garage onto the road.
The drive from the motel took at least two hours, including stop lights, and without shortcuts, while Maria's took at least three hours. I parked outside of the warehouse. Knowing how precious our time was, I didn't wait for Maria, and opened the warehouse door, beginning my search. Just in case, I decided to bring my pistol with me. As I walk down the hallway, I noticed how old this place was. It was covered in dust and cobwebs and there was a strange odor in the air.
A little over 15 minutes had passed and I checked most of the areas on the first floor. I decided to go upstairs, and I saw a light coming from a door at the end of the hallway. I checked the bullets that I had in my gun and I quietly inched toward the light. I walked slowly towards the door and turn the knob.
I opened the door only to see a desk full of paperwork and a computer opened on its lock screen. I quietly close the door and began shuffling and skimming through the papers on the desk. Most of them were involving Cuba, others involved someone by the name of Sylvia, and the last few involved my family. I picked them up and saw the documents that he was planning to use against us. But before I could read it I heard footsteps.
I decided to hide in the closet to the left of me, and I left it open just a crack to make out the individuals face.
He walked up to the desk and opened his computer. I began to think about my father's description of Nathan Gray. He has brown hair, green eyes, and he's around 23 years old.
I couldn't believe it. I was, no doubt, staring at the man that was about to ruin my family's life. Out of instinct, I jumped out of the closet and told him to stop what he was doing. As I held my gun to aim for him, his eyes grew wide as he put his hands up, and got on his knees.
"Please don't shoot"! He begged. "Are you Nathan Gray"? I asked him. "W-What do you want for me"?! He asked in a panicked voice. "Answer the question". I said as I aimed for his head. "Y-Yes, I'm Nathan Gray"! He said. "I know who you are too". He said in a shaky voice. "You're Dylan Knightwalker". He started.
"I've learned so much about you and your family. I know how they've mistreated you and Olivia". He said. I had to admit it. Just like Father, he knows what my weakness is, but I have to complete this mission. "Shut up"! I said I begin to hold a gun tighter.
"Please just listen. You don't need to do this"! He cried out. I could tell that he was afraid. "Why do you want to expose us"? I asked him. He stayed silent. "Why"?! I yelled, putting the gun to his head.
"I was set up"! He yelled. "By who"? I asked. "By the Cubans". He said. "They said that if I didn't leak that information by January, they will kill everyone I care about". He told me. "They said I owed them". He continued "Owe them what"? I asked. I-I don't know. He stuttered. "You're lying"! I said pressing the gun to his head even more. "I swear"! He shouted. "I just wanted to protect my family. I never wanted any of this"! He cried.
Something in my gut was telling me to let him go. I felt sympathy towards Nathan. Losing the people you care for is the hardest thing anyone could go through. I took the gun off of his head and faced him.
"Okay I'll let you go. But you have to listen to me". I said quietly. "If you don't leave now, my partner is dangerous, and she will kill you without hesitation. But if you give me the documents, I'll make sure she knows that you were never here". I said. "But where will I go"? He asked.
"Do you have any hideouts that the Cubans don't know about"? I asked. "There's one in America that I can go to". He said. "Okay, just hide out there until we leave for Russia". I said.
Nathan walks to his desk and hands me all of the documents as well as deleting them from his computer. "Thank you". He said gathering his things. Gray runs for the nearest exit and disappears from my sight. I stare at the documents in my hand and I begin to panic. If Maria finds out what I did, I'm dead. I started to run for the entrance door and I start my vehicle putting the documents there.
I needed to get back to the motel before Maria, so that I could hide the documents from her. So I decided to use the shortcuts, which, overall, took at least an hour to get back. I didn't see Maria's car in the garage space. She wasn't back yet. I ran inside the motel, up the stairs, and into my room. I shut and locked the door, closed the blinds and hid documents in the back of the nightstand. Out of breath, I plopped down onto my bed and began to stare at the ceiling feeling extremely uneasy.
What have I done?
