Chapter 3
Emily ran through the house and down the stairs. Grabbing her baseball bat and glove, she threw them into her bag, grabbed the bag and ran out of the house. Not bothering to grab her helmet she jumped on her bike and rode out of the driveway.
Panting, she biked along the roads of the town, to find the baseball diamond she had seen on the drive. She finally found it - filled with kids, it looked like they were sorting out teams. She was about to turn around when one of the team's captains, turned to look at her. Saying something to her friends, she ran over to Emily.
"Hey kid." She said cheerfully. "You play ball?"
"A bit." Emily replied.
Her bright smile widened.
"That's great! We need one more for our team!" She said.
Emily was about to refuse when she remembered the words of her mother, before they began the drive to the town.
"Remember Emily, you will need to make new friends." Not like she had any in her old town.
"Sure." Emily said, smiling.
"Great! My name's Sora!" She said. "What's yours?"
"Emily." Emily replied.
"Well, Emily, come and meet the team!" Sora said with a grin.
Sora grabbed her hand and pulled her over to 'the team'.
"Guys, meet Emily, our final player!" She said to everyone.
After came a chorus of Hi's and Hello's.
"Hey." Said another girl, with lightning-blue hair.
"Emily, this is Ariana, my best friend."
"Just call me Jay." Ariana gruffly said.
"Okay." Mumbled Emily, intimidated by her annoyed tone.
"Emily, what position do you usually play?" Asked Sora.
Pulling out her bat from her bag she said,
"You know, one would think this would tell you what position I play, but I'll tell you anyway. I play back-catcher." Emily said sarcastically.
Jay and Sora laughed.
"I like her." Jay said, smirking.
"Okay, you can bat first Emily."
"Sure." Emily said, pleased to show her skills to the team.
Emily stepped up to the home plate, ready to hit. The pitcher threw, it was a good fastball. Breathing in, the world seemed to slow down. Aiming her bat perfectly, she swung. There was perfect contact. The ball flew for a long distance along the field. Everyone stood there staring at her, dumbfounded, as she hared from base to base. They finally got a grip and dashed after the ball, and her team-mates were whooping and cheering as she ran around the bases.
"HOME RUN!" Roared Sora and Jay.
Then batter after batter hit, then ran to their bases, then earning them a total of 6 points. When the batter before Emily went to the home plate, Jay and Sora walked up to her.
"Hey, Emily." Jay began. "Where are you from? I've never seen you around here before."
"Oh, well I just moved into the mansion on the hill." Emily replied.
"What? People have gone into that house, and never came out!" Sora nearly shrieked.
"Well there is no-one in my house, so I doubt that." Emily said coldly.
"Rumour has it that there is a mirror in there, that if you touch it, you have to relive your worst memory." Jay replied.
"Oh, that mirror exists, I had to relive watching my father die." Emily said, walking off to the home plate, leaving the two girls shocked.
After the game, where the team won, Emily was ready to bike home, and come back the next day, she saw Sora and Jay running over to her.
"Emily!" Sora yelled at her.
"What." Emily asked using her same cold tone.
Sora and even Jay both flinched.
"We're going to your house with you, we want to see the mirror." Jay said.
Emily narrowed her eyes, then nodded.
"Get your bikes then." She said.
While they were biking home, Sora said to Emily quietly,
"You had to watch your dad die?"
Emily tensed, and Jay looked at Sora as if she was insane. Then Emily's shoulders drooped, much to Jay's surprise, and said,
"Yes."
"I don't want to pry, but how did he die?" Jay asked.
Emily sighed, as if she didn't want to answer, and Jay lowered her gaze, then Emily said,
"Illness, he got cancer, he had to be moved to the hospital within a week of his diagnosis, and died 5 days after. I visited him almost daily, and at the time of his death, I was with him. He had been connected to all these tubes," Her voice shook. "A-and his mouth and nose had to have this mask on it. His hair had fallen out already, and h-he was s-so weak. H-his last words were to me. I will never forget him." Emily said, getting her grip again.
Sora and Jay looked as if they regretted starting the conversation.
The rest of the ride was in silence. Once they reached the house, Emily's mother was on the phone. Looking up, she said into the phone,
"Oh! She has returned! Thank you for your help though! Good-bye!" She said, hanging up.
"Emily! Where did you- Oh! Did you make friends?" She asked happily.
"You could say that." Emily replied.
As she put her bike back, she told them,
"Don't touch it. Unless you want to relive your worst nightmare."
Sora shuddered.
Emily led them to the mirror.
"Wow," Jay breathed. Taking her hand, and touching the mirror part of the mirror. And to Emily's horror, her fingers went through.
Sora shrieked, and Jay whipped her fingers out.
Emily, curious, places her hand on it.
Her hand fell through.
Not saying anything,
She walked through the mirror.
