15. "Who are you?"

Marinette couldn't calm herself down. Every time she saw Chloé before and after dinner that night, all she wanted to do was tear her to pieces limb-from-limb. But as much as she wanted to get revenge, she knew that it was against the rules and she didn't feel like leaving the palace so soon.

She couldn't stop shaking. As soon as Marinette had fallen asleep, she had nightmares of the ripped up dress. You may think that it was stupid, but imagine if someone had stormed into your personal space, grabbed something close to your heart and destroyed it. Like your phone, for example. (I know how emotionally attached you are to your phone or device or whatever you're reading this on!)

Eventually, the nightmares got too bad. Marinette clambered out of bed shivering and took a sip from the glass of water sitting on her beside table. One of her maids usually watched over her during the night, but Marinette had dismissed them to their own beds. That gave Marinette all the privacy she needed.

"Spots on."

Though she knew that Chat probably wouldn't be awake, Marinette wanted to go to the Training Room to clear her head. To clear her head. As quietly as possible, she snuck to the secret passageway and descended into the darkness.

"Chat?" Ladybug asked in surprise when she saw that her cat-like friend was there. Chat turned around from where he was practicing using his staff on dummies. "What are doing up at this hour?" Ladybug said.

"A cat never sleeps, m'lady." Chat replied, giving her his trademark smirk.

"Oh really? I heard that cats sleep for about eighteen hours a day."

"Perhaps I sleep during the day time." Chat shrugged. "Perhaps not."

"I wouldn't know. Well, I suppose I don't really know the real you, so..."

"I am the real me." Chat said. "Oh, and, uh, I apologise for not being at your first akuma attack. I got held up in my civilian form."

Ladybug sighed. "You abandoned me!"

"I said sorry! I'm really sorry!"

She took in a deep breath. "I'm still mad at you for not helping me, but apology accepted. For now."

They stared at each other from across the room before Chat spoke again. "Can I show you something? I know a good place."

"I'd be delighted." Ladybug said. She followed Chat as he went over to what appeared to be a secret exit behind a bookshelf - how many passageways were there in this castle?.

They walked up a staircase which lead to a hallway on the Second floor. Chat looked both ways before taking Ladybug's hand and dragging her up to the nearest staircase to the Third Floor.

"Um Chat, that's the royal family's quarters, we aren't allowed up here." Ladybug protested, but Chat just pulled her up and then lead her up a staircase to the Fourth Floor. They came to another bookshelf in the wall and Chat searched it for a moment before pulling a book out. The bookshelf swung forwards and they entered a small shaft with a ladder.

"It's a bit of a climb, can you manage?" Chat asked.

Ladybug rolled her eyes. "Please. You're on."

She raced up the ladder until her head hit a trapdoor. "Ow!" She hissed in pain.

"You okay?" Chat called.

"I'm fine." Ladybug said, noticing the latch on the trapdoor. She unhooked it and heaved it open before pulling herself onto the ground - or well, the roof.

"Oh wow." Ladybug gasped, staring at the city of Paris around them.

"It's cool, isn't it?" Chat said as he came up after her.

"It's amazing." The roof was a small area with high walls surrounding the outside, except the top of the walls were made from glass - probably the really fancy kind that doesn't break that easily.

But the view was incredible. It was a clear night and stars twinkled above their heads. The skyline of Paris was before them, the Eiffel Tower seeming so close yet so far away.

"I love it." Ladybug said truthfully.

"I used to come up here all the time when I discovered that secret passageway." Chat said. "But now it's just the same, really."

"How long have you lived in the Palace for?" Ladybug asked.

Chat shrugged. "Longer than I can remember."

He must be a child of a maid or a guard or someone... Ladybug thought.

"Where do you come from m'lady?" Chat asked.

"Oh, well I'm a member of the Selected so obviously I haven't been here very long, but in my civilian life, I'm a Four."

"Oh." Chat said.

"It's alright. I'm sort of in the middle of the castes, if you know what I mean."

Chat stared at Ladybug for a second. "Who are you, m'lady?" He asked.

Ladybug stared into the distance, thinking before she replied. "I guess that I don't know who I am yet."
