Volta
During swift days and long nights,
We held each other close.
We imitated the ice
That clings to the window in winter.
When darkness settled,
I studied the freckles on your skin.
I brushed my hand through
The hair lying on your forehead.
I ran my fingers up and down
The grooves lining your tired crown.
I pressed my lips tightly upon
The shadows around your eyes,
And trailed my teeth
To the haughty bridge of your nose.
Carelessly, I held
The dark, soft cheeks,
And pushed my nails into
The craters of your flesh.
I dragged my nails (sharp nails)
Down your face and to your neck.
I tightened my hands (strong hands)
Upon your long throat -
And squeezed, with full force,
So that you woke up with a start.
You watched me with frightened eyes,
But I turned my head away.
I remembered the dark irises
Like two cups of coffee.
And when I looked, they were empty
And filled with pained tears -
I could see myself reflected in
The glassy surface of your round pupil.
