*Chapter Forty Four* {A View to a Kill}
"Christian," Elena's eyes widen as she walks into her home only to see her brother's ex-boyfriend. Christian smirks down at her.
"Hello, Elena, enjoying the vampiric life?" Christian chuckles. Elena gives him an annoyed look. "Oh, don't worry, I'm leaving. Hopefully I can find Kol before he finds Jeremy," Christian says turning his head towards the new hunter. "Do stay where he can't find you,"
"I'll be fine," Jeremy assures him. "He can't enter the house,"
"There are ways to lure your out," Christian says. "Best to keep your whereabouts a complete secret" Jeremy nods. "I'll be back tonight, hopefully with good news," Christian tells them. "Elena," Christian smirks winking at her before leaving the house.
"You called him?" Elena practically shouted when Christian was out of hearing.
"Who else was I gonna call?" Jeremy asks. "Damon was trying to kill me and you were nowhere to be found," He says defensively. "We can trust him, he would never hurt me," Elena sighs but agrees with him. She knows Christian would never hurt him, he's proved it over and over again.
"How are you?" She asks. Jeremy sighs rubbing his face.
"This is never gonna end," He whispers. "If Kol doesn't kill me first, then Klaus is just gonna force me to kill more innocent people. How many is it gonna take? 10, 100?" He grumbles. Elena gives him a sympathetic look before suddenly coming up with an idea.
"If you kill one Original vampire, their entire sire line will die with them. That's thousands, maybe tens of thousands of vampires. Kol compelled Damon to kill you, you're gonna kill Kol instead"
"What?" Jeremy whispers. "That's genocide, Elena"
"It's better than killing innocent people," Elena points out. "Klaus will turn out entire town into vampires to get what he wants, do you want that to happen?" Jeremy sighs running his hand through his hair.
"Kol's Christian's friend," Jeremy says. "Christian will kill me if we kill Kol,"
"No, he won't" Elena says shaking her head. "He'd forgive you. Jeremy, Christian loves you. He loves you enough to leave Elijah and go against Kol, for you" Elena tells him. "He would die before he let anything happen to you,"
"Right now, I have Christian as a friend. If we do this, I'll loose him for good," Jeremy says. "I'm not going to risk it,"
"And what if Christian fails?" Elena asks. "He's going to talk to Kol right now, what if Kol doesn't call Damon off? What if Kol decides to come and kill you himself? Are you just going to let him do it?" Jeremy sighs rubbing his face tiredly.
"Fine," Jeremy gives in. "I'll do it but only if Christian fails," Jeremy says. "If Christian is able to get Kol and Damon off my back then I'm not going through with it,"
"Fine," Elena reluctantly agrees. "We have a deal," Jeremy gives her a tired smile praying that Christian succeeds.
"So, you found me," Kol smirks as Christian walks into the house Kol is occupying. He turns his head and sees the dead home owners. "Had I known you were coming, I would have saved one for you... Probably the daughter, she tasted like fine wine"
"You knew I was in town, did you not expect me to come?" Christian asks him.
"Well, I guess I wasn't expecting you to find me" Kol shrugs. "How has my brother been treating you?" He asks.
"I'm not here to talk about Elijah," Christian says.
"Ah, yes, you're here to talk about Jeremy. It's hard to keep up on who you're with these days, careful, love, you're turning into the male version of Elena." Kol warns. Christian growls obviously annoyed with being compared to her. "Who will you be with next?" Kol wonders walking towards him. "Will you stay with Elijah? Get back with Jeremy? Or give little ole me a spin?" Kol chuckles.
"Well, we won't find out if you keep trying to kill Jeremy," Christian tells him.
"Maybe I'm just trying to tip the odds in my favor," Kol shrugs. "I get rid of Jeremy, I turn you away from Elijah, and bring you into my arms" Kol smirks. "Seems perfect to me,"
"So, you've turned my brother against Jeremy just so I can be with you?"
"Well, not just," Kol tells him. "There is that bit with Silas but getting Jeremy away from you is a bonus. I won't have to worry about you relapsing back to him,"
"What if we just cut out all the middle men?" Christian asks stepping closer. "I leave Elijah, I stay out of Jeremy's life, we leave Mystic Falls and we're never heard from again," Kol frowns his eyebrows and tilts his head.
"You'd leave everything, everyone just to run away with me?" Kol asks softly.
"Yes," Christian whispers. Kol grins but it only lasts for a moment.
"If only you were running away because you wanted to be with me," Kol says backing away. Christian pinches his eyebrows. "We'll have our time, love, when you truly want me and not when you're simply trying to keep your beloved Jeremy safe,"
"What if I told you that I did want to be with you?" Christian asks.
"I'd say you weren't 100% certain," Kol tells him. "There's too much uncertainty in your eyes, in your voice. You don't know what you want and I'm not giving into you until you know for sure. I'm not running away with you unless I am truly the one you want. When you're done with Elijah, when you're done with Jeremy, then it'll be our time. But until then, I'll wait" Kol says with a small grin. "But, I can speed up the process by getting rid of one variable"
"Kol," Christian growls but the Original vampire disappears from sight. "Damn it," Christian growls before going back to the Gilbert out.
"Any luck?" Elena asks the next morning.
"No," Christian growls. Elena shares a look with Jeremy that Christian misses. "I'll try again today... Are you sure going to school is the best idea?"
"He's not going to try something in broad daylight like that," Jeremy shakes his head. "Besides, Damon's locked up, right?" Christian nods. "I'll be fine," Jeremy assures him.
"Don't let your guard down," Christian advises as they leave the house. Christian sighs before leaving as well in search for Kol. Around midday Elijah gives him a call.
"Things going alright?" He asks.
"Well, they're not horrible," Christian shrugs. "Everyone's alive at the moment,"
"Be careful, I know you and Kol are close but that won't save you from his wrath," Elijah says.
"I'll be fine, how's the club?" He asks.
"A little hiccup with one of the vampires but I'm handling it," Elijah says.
"Anyone ever tell you that you're a natural businessman?" Christian asks smirking. Elijah chuckles a bit. "Hey, I was thinking maybe we could go to Orlando when I return?" Christian suggests. "The beaches, the sun, a new environment. Besides, it's been a while since I've bugged Jenny"
"Sounds wonderful," Elijah grins. "I look forward to it, I'll start making the arrangements."
"And I'll be home soon, I love you," Christian whispers.
"I love you more, Angel" Elijah whispers back. The two stay on the phone for a moment longer before hanging up. Christian sighs and continues his search for Kol which leads him towards the Gilbert out towards the end of the day.
"Trust me, Elena. Some things are better left buried" Kol tells her before leaving without noticing Christian. The middle Salvatore frowns his eyebrows and goes to enter the house when he sees Jeremy marching up like he's on a mission. Frowning his eyebrows, Christian leaps the to roof and sneaks inside.
"I'm sorry, he left," Christian hears Elena's voice. "I mean, I-I tried to stall as long as I could" Christian walks out of the room silently. The doorbell rings.
"That's Bonnie, she was right behind me" Jeremy says as Elena walks to the door. Christian presses his lips together as he gets the feeling that he's missing something important.
"I've considered your request for a truce," Kol says smirking as Elena opens the door. "Request denied" He smirks forcing his way into the house. Elena tries to stop him but he over powers her. "I'm sorry, I've already been invited in!" Kol chuckles marching into the house. Christian hides in the shadows and Elena and Jeremy do the same thing. "Hide and seek? Fine by me" Kol smirks devilishly.
"Jeremy, what's going on?" Christian growls finding him and his sister before Kol. "Jeremy," He whispers warningly figuring out that they had found a way to kill Kol.
"We have to keep moving" Elena snips quickly. She grabs Jeremy and pulls him along. Christian growls under his breath but splits up to find Kol.
"Ah, there you are," Kol growls finding Christian.
"I didn't know what they were planning," Christian says quickly.
"Oh, I figured as much," Kol says slowly walking up to him. "Which is why I'm not ripping your heart out right now," Kol growls snapping Christian's neck. "Sleep tight, love, I'll grab you before I leave" Kol says stepping over his body to continue his search for Jeremy and Elena.
When Christian wakes up, he hears commotion coming from the kitchen. He groans and quickly pushes himself up to a stand. Ignoring the soreness from his neck, Christian speeds to where the others are.
"Sorry about the sting. Now, which arm is it? Is it left or right?" Kol wonders when Christian arrives. "I'll just chop off both to be safe,"
Christian growls tackling Kol to the ground before he could harm Jeremy. Kol quickly shoves him off and the two rush to a stand. Christian growls standing in front of Jeremy protectively.
"Let it go, Kol" Christian demands.
"They're trying to kill me darling, that's not something I can just let go" Kol growls.
"Well, they're hardly the first to try" Christian shrugs. "Leave, we can work this out"
"I'm past trying to work things out," Kol snapped racing forward. Christian dodges his attacks and tries to keep him from Jeremy. Kol manages to throw Christian to the other side of the room before rushing to Jeremy. Jeremy acts quickly and uses the sink spray hose to spray water tainted with vervain at Kol.
Kol cries out and moves away from the water. Elena leaps forward and grabs the white oak from Kol's jacket. Christian's eyes widened as Elena tosses it to Jeremy who catches it expertly. He stops spraying Kol with the hose allowing the Original a moment to recover.
"Jeremy, now!" Elena ordered.
"Jeremy, don't!" Christian shouts speeding forward. He pushes Kol out of the way before feeling the stabbing pain of the white oak stake go through his chest and into his heart.
"Chris," Jeremy whispers horrified. Christian chokes out in pain as grey veins begin to cover his body. "No, no, no, no, no" Jeremy whispers tears instantly clouding his eyes. "No, please, God, no"
"It's ok," Christian chokes falling to his knees. Jeremy collapses beside him. Christian falls into Jeremy's arms. "I love you," Christian whispers before the veins cover the rest of his body.
"No," Kol whispers looking at Christian's grey body in disbelief. Jeremy holds his body close and buries his head into Christian's neck. The hunter cries softly.
Anger is quick to overtake the shock. Kol turns to Elena and begins to snarl. Elena looks at Kol fearfully. The Original appears in front of her before she could blink. Kol thrusts his hand into her chest and grips her heart.
"You should have stopped searching for the cure," Kol growls before ripping her heart from her chest. Her body hits the ground but Jeremy doesn't hear it, his entire attention on Christian. Kol moves in front of Jeremy. "I hope this eats you alive, I hope the grief consumes you. I hope you know that this is your fault," Kol snapped. "I will come for you Jeremy Gilbert, one day" He says before disappearing.
Kol's threat falls on deaf ears as Jeremy simply holds Christian close to him.
"You scared the shit out of me" Jeremy whispers with a small laugh. "I didn't know what I was gonna do or how I-"
"I love you" Christian tells him. Jeremy freezes and instantly falls silent. Christian looks him in the eyes. "I love you, Jeremy Gilbert" Slowly, Jeremy begins to smile. "You're all I can think about, you're the reason I want to live, you make my life worth living, and I love you"
"It's about damn time, Christian" Jeremy jokes laughing with a face splitting grin. Christian grins as well and laughs with him. He slowly nods.
"Yeah, you're right" Christian says smiling at him. "Come here" Christian mutters wrapping a hand around the back of Jeremy's neck. Jeremy willingly leans towards him planting a kiss on his lips.
"I'm so sorry," Jeremy sobs. "We should have left Mystic Falls, I should have never let you go," Jeremy kisses his forehead letting his lips linger there as the tears dripped off his face. "I love you,"
