6. Poor baby
"How are you feeling?" Ian asked her.
"Better than Ethan." She smiled as she took a sip out of her grape soda.
"Who's Ethan?"
"It doesn't matter."
"Really?" Ian asked as he took a bite out of his turkey sandwich.
"Yee."
"Do you guys want anything?" Kell asked as he gave Danny a napkin to clean the mayo off of her hands.
"I'm fine." The two of them answered at the same time.
"Anything new on Vic?" Danny shook her head.
"Depends on traffic."
""By the way, lay low. Someone is looking for Death."
"Death?" Ian asked confused.
"That's what they're calling Danny."
"Why?" Danny asked confused.
"Because the prostitute said you called yourself that."
"All I said was I'm your death before I killed him."
"That's where it came from." Ian took another bite out of his sandwich.
"If you don't want to get dragged into this world don't put that mask back on at night." Danny nodded because she knew that she didn't want to die a mercenary or be on the top wanted in the justice and the criminal world.
"What are we going to do with Pops?" She asked as she watched Gunner sleep next to her feet.
"We'll bury him tomorrow."
"What really happened?" She felt sad for Pops, he had to die alone. Pops had been more of a grandfather for more than half a year.
"They shot him, wound wasn't lethal but he had a massive heart attack.
"Thus killing him." Ian finished the sentence.
"What would happen if I become a mercenary?"
"You'll have to constantly watch your back hoping for the Feds to not catch up to you." Kell sat on the floor with his back against the wall like Danny and Ian who were sitting away from the windows. "Lets not for forget the other competitive mercs."
"Damn." She got up from her seat and washed her plate on the sink. "How does dad not get caught?"
"He has but he always has some crazy plan up his ass to escape." both Kell and Ian laughed.
"Why did they start looking for him?"
"Honestly. I get if he hadn't tortured the Lieutenant before killing him then they wouldn't have looked for him."
"Who is looking for her?" Ian asked as he petted Danny's hair as he washed his plate in the sink.
"I've heard rumors that is a confidante of Shadow."
"That kid?" Ian asked amused.
"Who?" Danny asked.
"Shadow. One of the youngest merc and if he's looking for you, you better hide and be prepared." Ian answered her.
"If he's asking for you it's because you're competition to him." Kell poured himself a glass of scotch.
"How? I only killed two people."
"Don't ask us, we're not the kid." Kell shrugged thinking of a way to help her keep her safe. Although he was keeping his cool but for some reason she could tell that he felt annoyed. He was annoyed because Victor had someone how gotten Danny knee deep into the mercenary world.
"Kell? What are we going to do with him?" Ian asked.
"Nothing." Kell answered half ignoring them.
"What do you mean nothing?" Ian asked almost shouting in Kell's face.
" She lays low or she gets killed. Unless if you got another plan." Kell put down his glass of scotch so hard it shattered.
"This better work." Ian seemed ready to fight any moment.
"It better." Kell growled as he leaned against the sink. "Also move out of that house, they know where he lives soon they'll figure out who you are." His phone vibrated with a text message.
"You got to be clowning."She was getting pissed.
"Not my fault you butchered James' son and shot Brandon dead."
"I had to or they would threaten him with the two of you, assfarts."
"We have no connection with Bloodhound." Kell almost shouted at her.
"Kell. You are the only living thing that doesn't fear Bloodhound." Gunner tried to ignore all the shouting. "And Ian. What's a retired veteran and doctor doing? You're single and hang out with Kell, the St.Matthew's bartender
"Were..."
"Yeah." She felt her phone vibrate inside her pocket.
"Who's it from?" Kell asked.
"Dad?"
"Still kicking." He answered.
"Tell me the headlines."
"Someone called Shadow is looking for Death. Mind explaining the name?"
"Prostitute hear me say a line and I guess she only caught the word death."
"He means bad news, stay at Kell's. Keep a .10m with you at all times, when in school carry the obsidian knife.
"On it. What's with you?" She asked as she watched Ian and Kell clean up the broken glass.
"Will be home by 4. Need anything?"
"No." She ended the call and looked at her hands.
"Everything ok?" Someone asked, making the three of them reach their weapons.
"God damn it, Kevin. Knock before getting into my apartment." Kell threw the tv remote at Kevin, his older brother.
"I'll knock when I want to." Kevin sat on the couch and petted Gunner.
"Annoying faggot." Kell muttered under his breath.
"Any news?"
"Nothing so far."
"What news?" Danny was so tempted to ask but before the words had gotten out of her mouth Kevin raised his finger.
"I'm not answering your questions, newborn. You gotta go to school"
"But....."
"I'm picking you up tomorrow by 11 on the dot." She was going to protest but didn't find a point in it. She headed to the bathroom until she remembered that she didn't have any of her stuff with her
"I'll head to my car to get my stuff out." She dangled her keys as she opened the door and let Gunner walk out with her.
"More than 10 minutes, you call. If i don't hear from you I'm looking for you." Kell was almost like a protective older brother to Danny. Although he was in his mid 30s he looked after Danny the same way a brother would. He would make sure she did her homework, ate, and kept herself out of trouble. The reason why he took care of Danny was not because he liked her or Vic but because she reminded him of his little sister. When he was around 10 he had a little sister, a 3 year old toddler. One day his mom was drunk and instead of locking the door when she had come in she left it open. That night the little girl, Naomi, walked into the street and got hit by a car, she did not survive. He blamed himself for her death, stopped talking until Victor transferred into 4th grade. What reminded Kell of Naomi was her spitting image. The dark brown eyes, natural tanned skin, and the way Danny smiled was identical to Naomi. It was natural that he worried about her not because of her appearance but because for what Victor did for him. One night in high school Kell was drunk when he jumped into the tracks of an oncoming train. He was ready to die but Victor saw him and helped him out of the tracks.
"Got it." She closed the door behind her.
"We got to do something about that child." Kevin turned the tv off and leaned forward.
"I know but she still needs 3 more years to emancipate her." Ian looked down at his hands. "And we can't leave her with someone else because they will kill that person, kidnap her again and get to Vic."
"The doc has a point." Kevin agree with Ian.
"We can't keep her with any of us, he'll be completely helpless." Kell closed the blinds.
"Then what are we going to do?" Kevin asked.
"Stop meeting so often?" Ian suggested unsure of his answer.
"What about Danny?" Kevin asked."Can we rent an apartment under a fake name and identity for her?" Kevin took a moment to think about the suggestion.
"We could but don't you think she looks a little too young for a 20 year old?"
"Yeah but what about her father is in the army and he'll be back in three months?"
"Let me make some calls and i'll get back to that question." Kell got his phone and a notebook out and started making calls to guys that both Kevin and Ian didn't know he had.
Gunner was happy that his new master was great to him, that she wasn't abusive and was thankful. He knew that Danny had heard the conversation and didn't seem pleased with what she had heard. He sniffed around looking for the perfect spot to take a dump while they walked towards the impala.
"Poor baby." She pout her lips as she brushed her fingers on the bullet holes. " We're lucky enough they didn't hit your gas tank." She almost cried because the impala had meant so much to Solomon despite her rusting away for years. The Impala had been his first car where he had sex with Victor's mother, the woman he loved. Victor's first memories were that Impala, how many conversations had taken place there since. The only reason why it was trashed was because of Victor's mother just for the heck of it. After Solomon had his accident he stopped trying to fix it, just watched as she rusted away like he rotted away. She opened the trunk and made sure the hidden compartment was still secret. She grabbed her duffel bag, called Gunner and headed back to the building.
