10. the life of shadow

After Oliver dropped Hailey at Emmanuel's junk yard he was made to talk to Danny through the phone. He changed his license plate on his car, changed into black clothes, and drove to the address that was sent to him. He noticed that the caller ad sent him the address of a small house in a peaceful neighborhood. He parked two streets down the house sneaking in it through the back door. A teenager in her mid teens pouring coffee in a mug. Her arms, neck and face were covered in fresh bruises that weren't there 8 hours ago. He stood motionless watching her move in a fearful way that even the spoon fell from her hands. She turned around from the sink, almost dropping the mug from her hands she noticed Shadow.

"I will not kill him." She shook as she broke down in sobs. " The inmates in jail will take care of him."

"But...."

" Call the cops and give this to them. There's important information in this." He pulled out a flash drive out of his pocket, she took it and watched him walk out of the house.

He drove back to the junkyard to pick Hailey up and as he got out of his car, he noticed Danny working on an impala.

"I didn't know you knew how to repair cars?" He asked as he approached her.

"I girl gotta know a thing or two on about how to fix her car."

"Then it won't be easy to hitch you a ride in my car?" He chuckled.

"Not if my car Is long gone."

"Then I'll be looking forward to it." He leaned against the car.

"Bite me. Now move." She elbowed him to stand up to close the hood. He stuck out his middle finger.

"Screw you."

"You can't screw me more than what my head already is."

"Where's Hailey?"

"Inside." Oliver knocked on the door before entering to look for his baby brother.

"She's in the couch." Emmanuel called out from the kitchen. She was in a pink jumpsuit with her pacifier in her mouth and pillows all around her to stop her from falling off.

"Why does she have bruises?" Emmanuel asked as he turned the stove off and leaned against the door frame.

"Probably mom. I don't know." He was about to pick her up but he decided against her and sat on the floor.

"Do you have a place to go?" Emmanuel threw a water bottle at Oliver who caught it. He shook his head. "Where do you sleep?"

"Before she was born I slept outside the apartment door but now I drive and sleep in my car with her." Emmanuel drank from his beer.

"Come over then." Danny walked in and headed towards the kitchen to wash her hands.

"Dan. You're staying her tonight."

"K." Danny called out from the kitchen.

"So can I give my baby a paint job tonight?" She asked as she dried her hands on her clothes.

"Is it polished?"

"Yeah."

"Then yeah, after dinner and homework." He sat on a chair and drank.

"Do I have to do my homework?" Se whined.

"No homework. No paintjob."

"Urgh. Fine." She grabbed her bag, took her books out and did her homework. Oliver fell asleep next to Hailey who soon after waked up and started crying. He was too tired to wake up fast and without doubting it Danny picked Hailey up and attended her. When he waked up to the sound of baby giggles.

"Why didn't you wake me up?" He asked as he sat up and walked towards her.

"You were asleep." He sat next to her on the floor.

"Thanks for helping me." He leaned against her shoulder and waved a the giggling baby.

"No probs." He watched as Danny played peek-a-boo with Hailey until she started to cry.

"How's she holding up?" Victor asked.

"She's doing ok." Emmanuel turned to look at his window and saw her and Oliver asleep with the baby cooing between them. "Are you really doing this?"

"Yes. It's for the best."

"Yeah but won't it affect her?"

"She'll understand."

"Last time I checked she's a nocturnal-raged-filled-psychopath-kid." He heard Victor sigh.

"True but she's damn old to understand."

"She's still a kid."

"Damn in, Dick. If she stays with me she'll get killed. The further away she's from me the better." He kept quiet for a second. "It's for the best."

"Yeah. The best you could come up with." Emmanuel was pissed and gave Vic some sass.

"Shut up, man."

"This better work."

"I'm betting my life on it."

"Your life is way too worthless to bet on."

"Asshole." Victor muttered annoyed.

"In moments of great trouble a wise man once said: Bite me foo."

"Woaw. Tone it down, baby boy." Emmanuel ended the call and drank from his beer while sitting outside.

"Mr. Emmanuel?" Oliver silently opened the door and stepped out.

"Why the formality, kid?"

"Sorry." He gently closed the door.

"I need to check on my mom....."

"Leave her here, we'll look after her."

"Are you sure?" Oliver asked uncertain of what he had heard.

"Yeah. Pick her up tomorrow after school."

"Thanks."

"Just go, we don't want you crying." Oliver got into his car and drove. He walked down the familiar hallway towards his apartment. The lock on the door was off, his friend, John, unlocked it in the morning. When he entered the apartment he saw the mess his mother had done, he started cleaning.

"Mom?" He shook her awake.

"Mmm?" She opened her eyes. "Where's Hailey?" She tried to sit up but she got dizzy and had to lay back down.

"At a friend's house."

"What happened?" She covered her face with one of Hailey's baby blanket.

"Just go and take a shower. I'll make you something to eat." He helped her to her feet and walked her towards the bathroom.

"I'm fine. I can do this by myself." She didn't want him to help her step into the bathtub.

"You always say that and you always fall." He helped her sit.

"Just leave me alone." She threw the shampoo bottle at his chest.

"Scream if you need something." He walked out of the bathroom and into the kitchen to cook some spaghetti for his mom.
