When Dana woke up that morning, she had no idea what the world had in store for her and it would put her to the test in more than one way.
Normally, Dana woke up to the sound of her lovely annoying alarm clock. Groaning and tempted to knock it off her nightstand, she would throw her hand over in an attempt to try and hit the clock. After the third try, it worked. She would get out of bed and jump in the shower. Lucky for her she already lived at her place of work so no commute to work. Working for a noble Scotsman had its perks. Though at times she felt those were few and far between.
After getting out of the shower she would get dressed. Then do her hair and make up before rushing down to the cook and grab a quick breakfast and cup of coffee. Her hair was usually tied up in a tight bun but today she had no time for that so as she made a run to the kitchen the head chef Glen looked at her as though he didn't recognize her.
"Since when do ya wear yer hair down lass?" he asked with a chuckle.
"Since I decided to do so, don't start Glen, I have to go awake his royal pain in the butt." Dana commented putting a bagel in her mouth.
"Still don't see why you left a publishing job in America to come be his assistant." Glen sighed as he turned to go back to his work.
"This was only suppose to be temporary, only to do research and I do need money so I thought it was a fair trade at first." Dana sighed.
"And now?"
Right after Glen asked his question, an alarm on Dana's phone went off. Time to wake her noble pain in the bum. Rolling her eyes she ate the rest of her food and took the tray that was waiting to be handed off to her employer. She settled herself before leaving the kitchen and making her way to her bosses bedroom. Not bothering to knock on the door because she had learned after the first fiasco that he wanted to be woken up calmly not with the sound of knocking on the door. She took a deep breath and walked into the room, the lights gentle turned on and she heard a loud thump from the other side of the bed. Rolling her eyes she didn't bother to look at whatever date had managed to stay the night.
"Where am i-'' the unknown voice asked before Dana heard the woman become sick on the floor.
'I am so not cleaning that up.' Dana thought to herself as she went to her bosses side of the bed.
"What time is it?'' her boss mumbled not even turning his head her way.
"Time to get up, you have a tour of the grand hall today to promote investments in the future of this place." Dana said as she went to the table and sat the breakfast tray upon it. "There is your food."
Going to the windows she opened the heavy drapes and opened them allowing the sun to intrude on the dark room. The date hissed as though she were a vampire. Not that it would really shock Dana to find out one of his dates were. Duncan McLaughlin groaned as he pushed himself up on his elbows and looked at his empty side of the bed.
"Was I alone Dana?" Duncan asked still not even looking her way.
"She's thrown up on the other side, Hamish will clean it and take her home." Dana replied as she turned to Duncan.
Duncan motioned for her to come closer and with a small eye roll, Dana leaned down so Duncan could whisper in her ear. He held onto her trying to steady himself as his lips were nearly in her ear.
"What's her name?" he asked and Dana held back a chuckle.
"I have no idea sir." She replied in a whisper. "I suggest you hurry the investors will be here at 10 so you have only and hour to sober up."
With that, Dana turned and went into the bathroom, walking right over the woman now passed out on the ground. She turned on the shower then went to his closet to pick out the clothes that would make him look presentable. Duncan on the other hand stood up and put his robe on only to see the woman passed out on his floor. He looked down at her puzzled, almost as though he had no recollection whatsoever.
"Jessica maybe?" Duncan questioned as he went to the closet and leaned against the doorway. "I haven't slept with you have I?"
Dana froze, turned from her task and looked at her boss with quite the evil glare in her eyes.
"I be takin that as a no." Duncan said running his hand through his dark black hair.
"Sir, I highly suggest you shower, the scent of alcohol is not becoming to investors." Dana said as she led him to the shower.
"Dana, unless you wish to join me in there I know how to get to my bathroom alone." Duncan laughed, a true and hardy laugh she hadn't heard since she first came there.
"Sir, take the shower. You stink." Dana said pushing him into the bathroom and shutting the door.
Turning back to the scene behind her, she saw Hamish looking down at the latest date of their boss and shaking his head. Hamish was an older man in his late 50's to early 60's. Dana had never asked his age but she had assumed it.
"That boy wastes more money and seed on harlots than real women, if he ain't careful he will loose all that seed and not be able to produce and heir to keep this place running. Be a shame, that damn boy needs to marry and settle down, he's 33 too old to play foolish games that I have to clean up." Hamish said putting the woman on his shoulder and then seeing her vomit. "Oh for Christs sake! Can't even hold her liquor!"
With that Hamish turned and left the room. He made a good point though, Duncan was in his early 30's and he had no prospects of marriage. What would happen to the castle if he never settled down and had at least one baby? Would this place close down? Would all the history in the walls be lost forever? Dana didn't know how long she stood there thinking but the next thing she knew a pair of hands were over her eyes.
"Do ya agree with Hamish? I waste my seed on unvirtuous women?" Duncan's voice made her freeze.
"Sir, it's not my place to wonder about where your seed goes." Dana answered as he gently turned her around to face him, removing his hands she looked up at him unsure what he would do next.
"Smart answer, you don't have to worry about my worries though, you are an American, a castle doesn't rely on you getting married and having children." Duncan said as he looked down at Dana. "If you were in my situation though I have no doubt you'd already be married with barins at my age."
Dana wasn't sure how to take his comment. Was it a compliment or an insult? Really in her eyes it could go either way. Pursing her lips in confusion, Duncan chuckled as he went into the closet. Dana stood still and waited, she had seen him naked more times than she wanted to confess and to say she wasn't attracted to him would be an outrageous lie.
"Either way, that was my last one night stand. I'll have Tom arrange someone for me to date and maybe it'll lead to marriage who knows?" Duncan called out from the closet.
"Yeah, because that is totally the way love works." Dana mumbled and walked to the door.
Walking to the grand hall, she saw where the throne was where the laird of the castle sat with one throne to the left and another to the right. One for the queen and the first born son. Above the thrones were the family crest imbedded on a shield with two swords through it, hung from the boards of the ceiling. In her eyes that was a very big danger to anyone standing below it. Though many times she had been assured that there was no way anyone was in true danger.
Still there was no way she would be standing under it. She watched as Duncan walked in with the investors a little less than and hour later. He was good at telling the history of the castle. Standing right below the family crest shield. He could tell stories about this place for hours.
"It's not that we don't trust you Duncan but you are getting older, you have no prospects of marriage or children that could continue to run this place if god forbid something happened to you." The older investor Greg said with a sigh.
"Right, well ya just canna marry the first lass ya meet." Duncan said uneasy.
"You can't sleep with every woman you first meet." Another investor said as he cleared his throat.
"It's a big risk, we don't have any good will about your future Duncan." Greg said as everyone heard a loud snap.
Dana looked right up and saw the tight cable holding the shield had broken and the shield was heading right for Duncan. It happened so fast that Duncan didn't have time to duck out of the way. The shield fell but to the right of him but the hilt of one of the swords had hit him on the head and knocked Duncan out. Everyone gasped, Dana ran over and checked his pulse. He still had one thank god. She could hear one of the others on the phone to a medic.
7 hours later at the local hospital
Dana had gotten to the hospital quite late because she had to grab things for Duncan and then had many ride obstacles to surpass before she arrived at the hospital. When she walked in she went right to his floor and stopped just outside Duncan's room. There she heard him talking.
"I am tellin ya! I want my wife! I want Dana! Where is Dana?!" Duncan was yelling at Hamish who looked at a loss for words.
Deciding to help poor Hamish, Dana walked into the room and the moment Duncan saw her then his demeanor changed. He sighed calmly as he reached his hand out to Dana. Unsure what to do, she looked to Hamish for advice, however all he did was shrug.
"Dana, where have ya been? I woke up all alone lookin for ya." Duncan said as he held his arm out practically begging for her to hold it.
Dana went forward and took his hand, he gripped her hand and pulled it to his lips and kissed it. Dana had not seen this side of her boss and was thoroughly shocked. A knock on the door made all of them look to the intruder.
"Hello, I am Dr. Michaels. I assume you are Dana?" he asked her to which Dana nodded. "May I have a word with you for just a moment, I promise she will be right back Duncan."
Duncan slowly let go of Dana and she went right to the doctor.
"What is with him? He is attacking like we are married." Dana chuckled but the doctor stayed stoic.
"That's exactly what he believes due to his fragile state that you should go along with whatever he says." The doctor tells Dana and she looked as if she were about to faint.
