Dawn's P.O.V.

A loud knocking woke me up the next morning. Newt immediately sat up in a protecting way with his arms as a shield before me.
I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and watched the same five guards as yesterday storm in with their Launchers raised. Somehow my tired brain felt satisfaction by seeing how much effort they had to do to contain five teenagers.
Then Janson stepped into the room and that satisfaction was gone. 'Rise and shine, kids,' he spoke, 'we've decided to give you your memories back after all. Like it or not.'
Minho jumped out of his bed, he looked like a tiger ready to jump his prey. 'Like hell you are,' he snapped.
Newt stood up as well and Thomas and Lisa got out of their beds.
I slowly followed, my heart beating wild. So this was it. The moment that I had been dreading ever since I left that white room. The moment all my secrets would come to light and I would betraye my friends.

'You told us we didn't have to,' Thomas said, his voice still heavy from the sleep.
'I'm afraid we don't have much of a choice,' Janson replied. 'The time for lies is over. Nothing's going to work with you four still in the dark. I'm sorry. We need to do this. Newt, of everyone, you will benefit the most from a cure, after all.'
'I don't care about myself anymore,' Newt responded in a low growl.
'Look, kids. I understand how you must feel. You've seen some awful things. But the worst part is over. We can't change the past, can't take back what has happened to you and your friends. But wouldn't it be a waste to not complete the blueprint at this point?' Janson argued.
'Can't take it back?' Newt shouted. 'That's all you have to say?'
'Watch yourself,' one of guards warned, pointing a Launcher at Newt's chest.

I quickly jumped between the Launcher and Newt. I had never seen Newt this angry, so unwilling to calm down, even for our safety. And that was all the confirmation I needed to know that I had to cure him. Whatever Janson wanted me to do, and he better told what it was he wanted me to do quickly.
'Janson,' I whispered, staring straight at him, 'please.' A feeling I couldn't quite explain lay like a heavy weight on my chest but I couldn't back out now.

'Follow us, calmly and we won't hurt you. You'll all be heroes when this is over,' Janson said as we walked out of the room.

I saw the three boys share a glare and knew they would only follow because a fight in the hallway was easier won than one in a tiny room.
The moment was coming closer.
We followed the guards and Ratman through the long corridors again. As we walked, Janson acted like a tourguide, explaining some of the paintings we saw or what lay beyond a door. Sometimes he would say things like, "this is the room we took away your memories" or "this is the room where we completed the Maze its map."
Finally it was Newt who snapped at him. 'I really wish you'd just shut your mouth.'
And Ratman did as he was told but he never wiped the slight grin off his face.
When we reached the area we had been in the day before, Janson stopped and turned to adress us. 'I hope you will all cooperate today. I'm expecting nothing less.'
'Where is everybody else?' Thomas asked. 'The other subjects have been recovering-' But before he could finish Newt was grabbing Ratman by the lapels of his white coat and slammed him against the wall. 'Call them subjects again and I'll break your bloody neck!'
'Newt!' I yelled, startled.
Two guards were on him in an instant, pulling him away and threw him against the ground the Launcher aiming at his face. 'Don't!' I yelled at the same time Janson calmly said. 'Don't.'
Newt slowly got to his feet, arms raised. 'Don't call them subjects. We're not mice trying to find the cheese. And tell your shuck friends to calm down. I wasn't gonna hurt you. Much.' Newt said, slowly standing up. His eyes fell on Thomas and I could read the question in his eyes. When are we going to attack?

I took a deep breath, my heart already shattering by the thought of what was coming.

'I think he's right,' Thomas suddenly spoke. 'I think it's time we did what we're supposed to do. We all agreed to it just last night.'
They were going to break out. Now.
My eyes landed on Lisa but she was focused on Janson. I followed her gaze and her father gave us a short nod and when I turned back to my sister her eyes were blood red.

The three boys came alive as one, all jumping at a guard. Who fought back as lions.
For a second I stood frozen, my brain processing it all too slow for my body to react but then the female guard pushed a gun in my hand and suddenly I had never felt more ready.

'Stop!' I screamed and at the sound of my voice the three boys froze.
I raised the gun and saw their eyes widen. With determination burning in my bones I pointed it at Newt. 'Get down on the ground with your hands on your head.'
My voice was oddly calm for the fear that was racing through my veins right now.

'Dawn, what is-' Newt started but he was cut off by Lisa her scream for him to shut up.
She came standing next to me and I noticed her eyes were fully red by now. She too had been given a gun and was now pointing it at the boys.
'What is going on?' Minho groaned, still standing and completely ignoring the fact that two guns and four Launchers were pointed at him.
'I said get down,' I spoke, the arm holding the gun trembling slightly.

'You heard her,' Janson said and as if it was a sign the guards forced the three boys down on their knees.
Thomas screamed in pain when a guard kicked against his leg.
'No!' I screamed, now pointing the gun at the guard. 'You promised you wouldn't hurt them!'
'Dawn what the bloody hell is going on!' Newt screamed and my heart ached by the pain on his face.

'I'll tell you what is going on, gentlemen,' Janson said, stepping forward, 'Dawn here has chosen her side.'
'No,' Newt whispered, his voice shaking.
My gaze turned to the ground, no longer able to look at him.
'Why?' Minho screamed.
'Why?' I screamed right back at him, 'because Newt is sick! He is slowly turning insane and you honestly think I would let that happen without even trying to find a cure? If you really think that you don't know me very well.'
Still avoiding Newt his gaze I now focused on Janson who had started pacing back and forth.
'And why is Lisa involved in all of this?' Minho whispered, frustration clearly visible in his voice.
'She is here to make sure you three listen and don't try to escape again,' Janson said calmly.
'Yeah, well I could easily overpower her,' Minho spat.
A small smirk appeared on Janson his face. 'I'm sure you could, which is why,' he gestured to Lisa who suddenly clicked off the safety of the gun and put it against her own head.

A startled gasp left my lips as Janson started laughing.
'Wait, no, don't!' Thomas yelled.
'Oh don't worry,' Janson grinned, 'she'll only pull the trigger if you make a wrong move.'
My eyes were glued to my sister who was staring straight forwards as she held the gun to her own head and I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
Of course Janson wouldn't keep his promise. My friends would get hurt no matter what I did or who I trusted. I couldn't solve this, I could only try to live with what I had chosen to do.
'Dawn, this isn't right, don't do this,' Thomas tried to bargain.
'I'm sorry,' I whispered, tears on the edge of my voice, 'I never meant for you to get hurt. I just want to safe him.'

'Right, enough chatting,' Ratman said and clapped his hands, 'let's move.'
The guards forced the boys up, pushing them in their backs to make them walk.
Lisa walked right behind them, the gun still at her head.
Taking a deep breath I put my gun in my belt and walked after the group, tears stinging in my eyes and my hands sweaty

We took several turns, walked through many halls until Janson stopped before a door made of glass. He pulled out his keycard and opened the door.
The boys were pushed inside by the guards, followed by Lisa and me.
The door closed with an echo going through the room.
Shivers ran down my spine when I saw the simple, white lab. A few beds stood in the far right corner, several machines beside them.
On the left was a huge computer screen with something that looked like a drawing of a brain on it.

The boys were put on the beds, being tied down without them moving as much as a finger. Though Minho was staring daggers at the guards.
'Alright,' Janson said, putting his hands on his back, 'this is how it's gonna work. In order for mister Newt to be cured we're going to have to connect all the date we've gathered so far and complete the blueprint. We've established that in order to do so we're going to need your Killzones.'
I narrowed, a sudden uncomfortable feeling settling in my stomach.
'And what exactly is a Killzone?' Minho questioned, not able to hide the harsh tone in his voice.
Janson let out a short laugh and I felt every hair on my body rise.
'I thought you would have figured at least that out by now, mister Minho.'
'Stop the teasing what is it?' Thomas yelled.
All the joy vanished from Ratman his face at once and suddenly he looked more deadly and terrifying than he ever had. 'The Killzone is your brain. We need your brain.'
