Chapter 4: Guitar lesson
After another average day at school, I quickly went to my house for a short while to grab my guitar, which was already in the gig bag. I then made a bee line straight towards Sakuragaoka all girls high school.
After a while of walking, I am currently in front of the main entrance of Sakuragaoka all girls high school.
I don't know why, but even standing in front of the school gates makes me feel nervous and out of place.
(Flashback)
We were walking back home after buying Yui's new guitar, which is currently behind her in the gig bag.
Akiri: I'll admit, I'm kinda jealous right now. You're so lucky to have Les Paul Standard as a first guitar
Mio: And at such a low price too...
Ritsu: I wish I met Mugi a long time ago...
Yui: Why do you all look so down? I can finally start practicing! I'm so excited!
Mio: Yui's right. We are finally one step closer to completing the band
Ritsu: Alright. Yui, you better practice hard!
Akiri: I can teach you, if you want
Yui: Really?
Akiri: Of course. I'd be happy to
Mio: Having a personal coach is always better than learning by yourself
Yui simply nodded.
Yui: Teach me, Akiri-kun sensei!
Akiri: Then that settles it. Now we just need a place to meet
All of us thought for a second.
Ritsu: I know! You can use our clubroom!
Akiri: Huh? You mean, in your school?
Mio: Of course
Akiri: Wouldn't it be weird a guy to just walk into an all girls school?
Ritsu: Relax. You just need a visitor's pass from the security guard and you'll be fine
(Flashback over)
I nervously took a step inside and went inside the building.
To my left, I saw the security guard sitting behind a small window, reading a newspaper.
Akiri: Umm... Excuse me, sir?
He looked over and notices me.
Security: How can help you, young man?
Akiri: Umm... I'm here to... Umm...
???: Oh hey! You're here
I looked over to see that it was my sister, holding a textbook.
Security: Miss Shiranobu? You know him?
Akari: Yep, he's my little brother. He came here as a personal teacher for the Light Music Club
Security: Is that so?
He reaches over to a visitor's pass hanging from the wall.
Security: Here you go, young man
Akiri: Thank you
I took the visitor's pass from his hand and went towards my sister.
Akiri: How do you know I was coming here?
Akari: The girls told me. I teach in their class, remember?
Akiri: I see. You know where their clubroom is?
Akari: Just follow this hallway and go up the set of stairs on your left. Their clubroom should be on the top floor
Akiri: Thanks, sis
Akari: No problem. Have fun, but not too much fun
I heard her say with a giggle and a wink, but I didn't know why.
Akiri: Okay
With that I made my way towards the clubroom.
I went up the stairs and eventually reached the top floor. I then saw two doors, one of them had a sign above it labelled "Light Music Club".
I then went and knocked on the door.
*knock* *knock* *knock*
The door opens up slightly and I saw Ritsu peeking through.
Ritsu: Akiri! You're here!
She fully opens the door.
Akiri: Hey, Ritsu
Ritsu: Come in
I took a step inside and looked around.
Akiri: Wow. Nice place
Ritsu: Thanks
I then saw the rest of the club members having tea at a set of joined tables in the back.
Yui: Hi, Akiri!
Yui waved from her table with her usual smile.
Akiri: Hey girls
Mugi: We were having some tea while waiting for you. Why don't you try some
Yui: Yeah! Mugi-chan's cakes are the best
I then went over to the table and took a seat. Mugi then places a teacup and a slice of strawberry shortcake in front of me.
Akiri: Whoa. This looks good
I grabbed a fork and my eyes widen as I took a bite of the cake.
Akiri: Oh wow! This is delicious!
Yui: Akiri-kun, try this one
Yui handed me a cupcake and I took a bite.
Akiri: This is delicious as well!
Mugi: Try the tea
I took a sip from the teacup.
Akiri: This is the best tea I ever had
Mugi: Thank you
I quickly get back to eating the cakes.
(Timeskip)
Akiri: Man, that was good
I said patting my full stomach.
Akiri: And you girls said you eat this everyday?
Yui: Yup!
Akiri: I really wish that I can join your club now
Mugi: You're welcome to visit anytime
Akiri: Really? Thanks, Mugi
Ritsu: Come on, enough chit chat. Play something for us!
Mio: Yeah. I want to see you play
Akiri: Right. I'll get my guitar
I then went and unzipped my gig bag, revealing the black Gibson SG with gold hardware.
Mio: That's a really nice guitar
Akiri: Thanks. His name is Blackie
Yui: You named your guitar? That's so cool!
I put on the guitar strap and stood up. I then plugged my guitar to one of the amplifier. The girls sat on a couch and I begin to play one of my favourite solos.
After I finish playing, I see that they were still staring at me wide eyed.
Akiri: Uhh... Girls?
All of them then stood up as they started to applaud.
Ritsu: That was amazing!
Mio: Yeah. You're really good
Ritsu: You're really good at keeping a consistent tempo
Mio: Unlike a certain drummer
Ritsu: Hey!
Akiri: He he. Thanks, girls
I feel my cheeks heat up as they complimented me and I look away.
Yui: That was so cool! Teach me how to play that!
Akiri: Hold your horses, Yui. You gotta learn the basics first. Get your guitar, we're staying the lesson
Yui: Yes, sensei!
Yui excitedly grabbed her guitar and plugged it into a second amp. She then sat on the bench and she strums her guitar with her fingers.
Yui: Guitar strings are scary. They are thin and hard, so I might cut my fingers on them
Ritsu: You're right. You better be careful, or you'll cut your fingers and bleed like crazy!
We then suddenly heard a scream and we saw that it was Mio, who is shaking and covering her ears.
Yui: Mio-chan?
Akiri: She can't stand painful stories. She's always like that
I walked over to her and put my hand on her head. I then gently stroked her hair and she calmed down.
Akiri: I guess it still works to calm you down
Mio: T-thanks, Akiri
Akiri: No problem
For a second there, I swear I could see her blush before she quickly got up as she realizes that the others are watching and she cleared her throat.
Mio: Well, your fingertips will callous as you practice, so you won't bleed anymore. See?
She held her left hand up for Yui to see.
Yui: You're right! It feels good
She grabs her hand and squishes her fingers for a while.
Yui: How about yours, Akiri-kun?
Akiri: Eh? W-wait!
She then grabs my left hand and started squishing my fingers just like she did with Mio's.
Yui: It's not as soft as Mio-chan's. And it feels rougher too
Akiri: O-of course. I'm a boy
My face started to heat up.
Akiri: (thoughts) A girl is touching my hand...
I then noticed Mio looking at me sullenly.
Akiri: Mio? What's wrong?
She quickly looks away.
Mio: N-nothing!
Ritsu: Oh? Is someone jealo-
Mio immediately hits Ritsu in the head before she can finish her sentence.
Ritsu: Ow!
Mio: Shut up
I noticed that Yui hasn't stop pressing my fingers.
Akiri: Umm... Yui? Can you let go now?
Yui: Just a bit longer
Akiri: We need to start the lesson
Yui: Oh yeah! The lesson!
Akiri: You forgot already?!
(Timeskip)
Currently, me and Yui are sitting on the bench, next to each other holding our guitars.
Akiri: Alright. Since you're a complete beginner, I'll start with the parts of the guitar
I hold up my guitar for her to see and I point towards the body.
Akiri: This is the body, the main part of the guitar. Down here, is the bridge. It's where one end of the strings are attached. The middle here, are the pickups. They pick up the sounds of the strings
I then point towards the upper parts of the guitar.
Akiri: The neck, sticks out from the body and on top of it, is the fingerboard and these metal strips are called frets
She nodded as she listened closely.
Akiri: At the end of the neck is the headstock. This is where the nut and tuning pegs are. The tuning pegs are used to tune the guitar and is where the other end of the strings are attached.
Akiri: The place where you will be spending the most time with, is here, the fingerboard and frets. That's where you push down the strings to create notes. The frets are numbered from the top to bottom. So the first fret is all the way up here, followed by the second fret, third, fourth, all the way down to the 22nd fret
Akiri: The other parts are the volume and tone knobs, pickup selector and the pickguard. You got all that?
She nodded once again.
Yui: So... Body, pickups, neck, headstock. Strings, fingerboard, frets, and tuning pegs
She said as she points towards the right parts of her guitar.
Akiri: Correct. Next, I'll explain the strings in more detail
I point towards the strings.
Akiri: These as you know are the strings. The thickest string, is called the sixth string and the thinest string, is called the first string. In terms of string names, they are, low E, A, D, G, B and high E, from the sixth string to the first.
Yui: E, A, D, G, B, E, from the sixth to the first string
She repeated while touching the strings one by one.
Akiri: That's right. Now, we'll get into basic chords
I then went and pulled out a chord book from my gig bag.
Akiri: Here. It's my old chord book. And since I don't use it anymore, I figured you can have it
I handed her the book and she accepted it.
Yui: Thank you, Akiri-kun!
She excitedly opens the book and got confused.
Yui: Sh-show me how to read music first
Akiri: Don't worry, it's not that hard. First of all, these are called tabs. Tab is a form musical notation, similar to sheet music, which I will teach you later on. But for now, we'll focus on learning tab. You see those numbers there?
She simply nodded.
Akiri: The lines, represent the strings that are plucked. And the numbers written on the lines represent the fret used
Yui: Huh?
Akiri: For example, look at the E chord
She looks towards the book and finds the E chord.
Akiri: I need to push the second fret on the fifth string, second fret on the fourth string, and first fret on the third string. And if there are zeros, you just play it without fretting.
I push the exact strings I needed and a clean E chord was heard as I strum my guitar with my pick.
Yui: Woah! I want to try that!
She grabs her pick and places her fingers on the strings. She then played the same E chord, but it wasn't as clear sounding than when I played it.
Akiri: That's a good start. You just need to push the strings a little harder so that the notes rings out. Also, be mindful as to not mute the other strings that should be played
She simply nodded and focuses on her left hand.
She adjusts her fingers while still pressing down on the same frets and she strums the guitar once again. A clean E chord was heard as she did it correctly this time.
Akiri: That's better
I then continued to teach her the other basic chords.
(Timeskip)
After a few minutes, I decided to end the lesson.
Akiri: I think that's it for now. If we go on for much longer, your fingers could get hurt. Good job, Yui. You learn quick
Yui: Thank you
Akiri: Just keep practicing and you'll be an expert in no time
Mio: Oh? You two are done already?
Asked Mio who was having a conversation with the others at the tables.
Akiri: Yup. Just a little more practice and she'll be good to go
Ritsu: That's great!
Mio: This is finally the start...
Ritsu: Of our Light Music Club!
Mugi: Yeah
Ritsu: Our dream, to play live at Budokan!
Akiri: Budokan, eh?
Yui then went to unplug her guitar from the amplifier.
Akiri: Wait, don't-
*SCREECH*
It was too late as she pulled out the cord, resulting in a loud, ear piercing shriek coming from the amp.
Akiri: That's why you should always turn down the volume or turn off the amp before unplugging the cable...
Yui: You should've told me earlier...
All of us just let out a sigh.
