Medusa Staring Contest

[Before Seto found Mary]

[Or Set found Mari]

[Gosh dang this is confusing]

Mary POV

I stared at the ceiling, waiting for Mari to come home. He was so late, even with his speed. I wondered what had happened to him.

Then there was a knock on the door.

It startled me so much that I fell off my bed and onto the floor. "Ah!"

"Mary! Eh, I'm sorry... but I brought someone!" Mari's small voice came from the direction of the door.

I was shocked. Mari actually found a person this far out into the woods? What were they doing so far out here? I rested my elbows on the bed. "W-Well then, come inside..."

I looked over at the boy with a white hoodie standing by Mari. He looked exhausted. "Um," He said uncertainly, "I shouldn't be here for too long, my sister is waiting for me..."

Mari looked at him in surprise. "You have a sister? Well, I know how sisters can be. She'll get impatient and right when you get back she'll start yelling-"

The boy looked away. "I'm more worried about her than she is for me," he said quietly. "She completely ignores a lot of things. It's like her body's on Earth but her mind's in another universe."

Mari snickered. "That sounds like Mary when she's daydreaming."

"Mari!"

"Sorry."

I went into the kitchen to go fix tea for the guest. When I was about three quarters of the way through, it occurred to me that I hadn't gotten the boy's name yet. I finished the tea hurriedly and dashed into the living room. But I don't run much, and I wasn't used to it, unlike Mari, so I tripped on my own boot and the tea went flying. It splattered all over Mari and he hung his head and sighed. "Every time."

"I-I-I'm sorry!" I squealed from the floor.

The boy come over and patted me on the head. "Hey, it's fine. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time."

"To time to time," Mari muttered.

That was the last straw. I glared at Mari, my vision turning red. My cheeks puffed out and Mari froze for a second, then his eyes turned red and he glared back. I found myself seemingly melting into the floor, relaxing to the point I almost fell asleep.

"S-Sorry!" Mari said, looking away sharply,

"Me too..." I said, burying my face into the soft rug under me. The boy was looking back and forth between Mari and I, but he seemed to calm down a bit.

"Uh," he said nervously, "I've really got to be going, I'm worried about my sister."

"Wait," Mari said. "If I may ask, what were you and your sister doing this far out into the woods anyway?"

"Uh, I kind of... ran away from home and she just blindly followed me until I stopped."

"You ran away?!"

"Sorry, but I've got to go!"

"Wait! I still have questions!"

The boy was out of the door.

Mari looked at me pleadingly.

"No," I said.

"Please!" he cried, begging me. "I didn't even learn his name!"

"If you go, I have to go with you, then." I said, standing up.

"Yes!" Mari punched the air. "Come on, Mary! Get on my back! But I may not be strong enough to carry you..."

I climbed onto his back. "You can do it," I said reassuringly. "I know you can."

"Here goes!" Mari said. I could hear the strain in his voice. Mari was out of the door as quick as lightning, dashing through the woods, the trees blurred past and the sky, which was turing pink, looked like it was moving the opposite direction. Soon, we could see the boy walking down the dirt trail in front of us.

He looked back, and cried out. "Ahh! How did you find me so fast?"

But Mari had already overshot, and he was grinding his feet into the ground, trying to stop. "EEE! I HATE WHEN THIS HAPPENS!!"

I was yelling too. "AHHH! MARI!! STOP!! PLEASEEE!!"

"I'm trying!" He skidded to a stop right in front of a big oak tree. "Whew! That was really close!" He looked up at me and smirked. "Thanks for the extra weight, Mary."

"Mari!"

"Sorry!"

"Hey." A girl with long dark hair peered out from around the tree. I couldn't see her face well. "I'm Set. Who are you?"

"I-I'm Mary."

"I'm M-Mari."

"Set!" the boy cried, running up behind. "Nothing happened to you, right?"

Set nodded. "I'm fine, Seto. No need to worry." She stepped out into the light.

"Eh?! You two look exactly alike!" Mari exclaimed.

"We're twins." Set said, but she looked a little uncertain. She turned to Seto. "Right?"

Seto walked over and took a hold of her arm. "Yes, Set." He said gently. "We're twins. Always have been, always will be."

"Right." Set said, nodding. She pointed in the direction of Mari and I. "Aren't you twins, also?"

Mari nodded. "She's my twin sister, yes. Incredibly annoying."

"Mari."

"Yes?"

"Stop it."

"Sorry."

I turned to Set and Seto. "I've really got to be going, with Mari. He's got to go to sleep, or... he'll be cranky in the morning."

Mari looked like he was going to protest, but apparently he changed his mind. He lifted me up onto his back and we raced home, twigs getting stuck in my hair.

Seto POV

It was getting dark, and I was seriously wondering why I didn't ask those nice people, Mari and Mary, if we could stay with them. But I had a gut feeling that if we stayed with them, we would get comfortable and we would have stayed longer than intended, and Onee-chan and the others would become progressively more and more worried as the days grew long. Although we had managed on nuts and berries for now, I assume we'll have to go back sooner or later.

"Seto." Set's calling snapped me out of my trance. "Don't you miss Onee-chan?"

I looked at her. "Yeah."

"Then why did you come out here?"

I looked towards the ground. "I-I couldn't take anymore of the voices, so I ran to where there weren't any." I felt tears slowly sliding down my cheeks as I remembered.

"E-Eh... Seto, please don't cry..." Set looked kind of helpless. She didn't know what to do.

I stopped my crying for her sake. "I-I'm okay."

Set studied my wet face warily. "You don't look okay."

I waved my hand. "Thanks for worrying, really, but I'm okay."

She shrugged. "Okay."

I sighed. As usual, she only cared for someone for about five minutes, then she retreated back into her own world. She'd gone through her own struggle, people hated her because she was pretty; but she was the very definition of airhead. When she used her power, which was most of the time, she didn't respond to anyone or look at anyone. You couldn't snap her out of it unless you were someone close to her; so people usually ran to me to bring her back to reality. Sometimes, though, even couldn't do it.

Her eyes started to go red, but they quickly snapped back to their familiar honey brown. She sat on her knees on the wooded floor and cupped her hands together.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Shh," She said, as if in a trance. "You'll see."

A few minutes later, a bird the size of a chicken settled in her palms. She smiled sweetly at it. "How're you doing?" The bird chirped in reply, and Set laughed kindly.

I got up to look. "You'd rather say here than go to your imaginary world?"

She looked up at me. "I get the feeling you need me here with you."

"With me?"

"With you." The bird chirped, and Set chuckled. "And you too, of course."

We both laughed simultaniously, our voices mixing, like real  twins should.
