Chapter 3: jaundice

~Beacon Academy~
*(Y/N) Rose POV*

I was with Team RWBY in Professor Goodwitch's class. I was sitting between Blake and Ruby. There was an ongoing match between Cardin Winchester and Jaune Arc, and it was a sad, sad match. Especially for Jaune.

Cardin, being the prick he is, was laughing at Jaune's sad state. That was until Jaune charged at Cardin for an attack. Cardin stepped over to the side and attacked using his mace. Knocking away Jaune's shield and made Jaune tumble a bit. I watched as Jaune went for an downward slash, but was blocked by Cardin and kneed into his groin. What a low blow from a bastard. Jaune fell and was about to be ended by Cardin. I was about to end Cardin right then and there, but the match was stopped by Professor Goodwitch and I felt a hand grab my shoulder. I looked at the owner and it was Blake stopping me.

"I know you don't like Cardin, neither do we, but don't do anything that will get you into trouble." Blake said to me. I nod at Blake while calming down. The both of us looked back at Prof. Goodwitch.

"Students, as you can see, Mr. Arc's Aura has now dropped into the red. In a tournament-style duel, this would indicate that Jaune is no longer fit for battle and the official may call the match," Prof. Goodwitch began. "Mr. Arc, it's been weeks now. Please, try to refer to your scroll during combat. Gauging your Aura will help you decide when it's appropriate to attack or when it is better to a... more defensive strategy."

Jaune sat while looking at his scroll and sighs.

"We wouldn't want you to be gobbled up by a Beowolf, now would we?" Prof. Goodwitch asked.

"Screw you, Cardin." I said. That got his attention.

"Got something against me, "machine?" Someone like you? Please." Cardin said.

"how did a prick like you got into Beacon and allowed by Professor Ozpin is completely beyond me." I replied as I had a stare down with Cardin.

"That is enough out of you both," Goodwitch got between us. "Mr. Winchester, Mr. Rose is a certified huntsman. Now, Mr. Rose, I refrain you from using any vulgar language while in my class."

"I apologize, Prof. Goodwitch." I replied to Prof. Goodwitch. "Do we at least have enough time for one more match?"

Prof. Goodwitch looked at the time and looks back at me.

"We have enough time for one more match," Prof. Goodwitch said to me. "Who will be your opponent?"

"Cardin Winchester."

"Mr. Rose, Mr. Winchester already ha-"

"Fine, took out Jaune and he was weak. He'll be no better." Cardin interrupted Prof. Goodwitch with a grin.

"Fine, final Match. Cardin Winchester vs. (Y/N) Rose." Prof. Goodwitch announced the match." Prof. Goodwitch told me.

"You should have grabbed a weapon. Now, you're dead." Cardin tried to threaten me, but it didn't work. I was simply calm and readied myself. Then, to everyone's surprise, i started glowing and transformed into a robot known as "Sincline", much to everyone's shock and amazement.

"Match, begin!" Prof. Goodwitch declared. Cardin started off with a charge and I dodged to the side. evading his attack as he tried over and over again to hit me, but it wasn't working to his favor.

"Stop! Moving! Around! And! Let! Me! Hit! You!" Cardin said while flailing his mace wildly and without focus. I jumped backwards dodging one more attack. Cardin was heavily breathing.

"Is that it? I was expecting more. How disappointing." I said while taunting Cardin.

"Shut up."

"How did you manage to get into Beacon with skills like that? Pitiful. Even a siren fights better than you, and they're more pacifists than anything."

Cardin raised his mace into the air and cried out his battle cry or whatever. I stood there as I heard Team RWBY telling me to move, but I didn't. As Cardin got close and slammed his mace down, I used my armor lock and it shattered Cardin's mace into pieces.

"M-m-my weapon. How? What the hell did you do?!" Cardin furiously yelled at me.

"My armor lock is indestructible. Now..." I replied and held my sword at his neck. "I suggest you yield, Cardin. We wouldn't want a bouncing Cardin head, now would we?"

I seen Cardin's face and it was sweating a bit as he looked down.

"I... I Yield." Cardin said through his teeth. I removed my sword from his neck and began walking away, but I was called out by Ruby.

"Big Brother! Behind you!" Ruby yelled at me. I seen Cardin's shadow and dodged his attack while I stabbed my tail through Cardin's lower back, causing him to scream in pain.

"What is wrong with you, Cardin? I showed you mercy and you tried to attack me while my back was turned? That's not how a Huntsman acts." I said while my bladed tail was coated in his blood.

"Mr. Rose, remove your tail from Mr. Winchester's back at once." Prof. Goodwitch ordered. I complied and ripped my tail from his back and he fell onto the ground while grabbing his wound. "Mr. Winchester, that kind of act would disqualify you from any tournament. Team CRDL, take Mr. Winchester to the infirmary."

The rest of Team CRDL grabbed Cardin and walked off to the infirmary. I reverted back to normal and looked over at Prof. Goodwitch and readied myself for a lecture.

"Normally, I would have you suspended for such an action, but I will let you get by with detention." Prof. Goodwitch replied.

"That I can work with."

"I will have you spend detention in Professor Port's class after school." Prof. Goodwitch said. She turned to everyone else. "Remember everyone, the Vytal Festival is only a few months away. It won't be long before students from the other kingdoms start arriving in Vale. So, keep practicing. Those who choose to compete in the combat tournament will be representing all of Vale."

As she said all that, I saw Yang pumping her fists, Weiss was getting all excited, and the same was said for Ruby. Blake didn't show much reaction about the Vytal Festival, but looked at me with a worried face. Pyrrha had the same facial expression, but it was directed towards Jaune. The bell rang as I looked at Jaune. I went over and helped him up.

"Thanks, Y/N." Jaune thanked me.

"Anytime."

"Big Brother! Are you okay?" Ruby asked worriedly.

"I'm fine thanks to you, Ruby." I replied while messing up her hair a bit.

"You dunce, you almost got suspended for that action!" Weiss scolded me a bit. "But, at least you got off lucky."

"Weiss, I'm fine, but yeah that was instinct. I had a similar encounter, but I stabbed the siren into his ribcage and tore her in half." I told Weiss.

"Wow, who knew you can be brutal, little bro." Yang impressively said.

"Only if necessary, or if it happens on instinct." I replied.

"Are you sure you're alright?" Blake asked.

"Blake, I told you, I'm fine. What is it going to take for you believe me at all?" I asked. Blake got into my ear and whispered.

"Take me out to the book store in Vale, and we're good." Blake requested which made me smile a bit.

"Yes, Blake. I'll take you out to the book store later."

"Great. We should head to the cafeteria." Blake stuttered a bit and walked ahead. I smirked and followed her as did RWY. We got to the cafeteria and stood in line to get our food. I had the normal burger and fries, as did Yang and Ruby, but Ruby had a side of cookies. Weiss had whatever she had and Blake had a small pile of fish and tuna. It makes sense since she's a cat faunus. We sat down at a table next to Team JNPR and I noticed Jaune barely touched his food. Blake had me sit next to her as Yang was next to me, much to Weiss and Ruby's disdain. While this was going on, Nora was telling a story. Yang was paying attention. Blake was reading her book. Weiss was filing her nails. I was looking at Jaune with Ruby and Pyrrha concerned for him.

"So, there we were in the middle of the night." Nora began.

"It was day." Ren corrected her.

"We were surrounded by Ursai."

"They were Beowolves."

"DOZENS OF THEM!"

"Two of them."

"But they were no match, and in the end, Ren and I took them down and made a boatload of Lien selling Ursa skin rugs."

"She's been having this recurring dream for nearly a month now."

"Really?" I asked. "If that's the case, wouldn't the skin rugs dissolve into smoke as all Grimm do?"

"Yeah, that's it." Ren said.

The story was interrupted when we heard an "ow" coming from the rabbit faunus as Cardin was pulling her ear.

"I told you they were real." Cardin said while pulling her ear.

"What a freak." Russel added in. I had enough of it and stood up. Yang was going to stop me, but I flashed red to stop her. The rest of Team CRDL stopped laughing as they saw me with my eyes glowing a bright silver.

"What? This is funny. Why aren't you guys laughing?" Cardin questioned his teammates.

"Uh... Cardin..." Dove said as he was slowly walking away. After a minute, Russel and Dove ran, but Lark stayed.

"What's with those two?" Cardin asked.

"Cardin," Lark replied as he was shaking a bit. "Behind you."

"Huh?" Cardin questioned as he turned and saw me clearly ticked off. "Oh, it's you. You have any idea how much pain you put me through? Now, I think it's about time I returned the favor."

Cardin was about to land a punch at me, but I caught his fist. He tried to punch me with his other hand, but I jammed my left hand into Cardin's face, combined with it being super heated, left a gruesome hand print burned on his face.

"AAAAHHH!!!!!" Cardin screamed in pain.

"Let that be a lesson for what you did." I said coldly. Cardin then ran, with support from Lark. I looked over at the rabbit faunus and helped her up.

"Hey, you okay?" I asked her.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Thank you." She replied and thanked me.

"Name's (Y/N) Rose. What's yours?" I asked while holding my hand out.

"V-Velvet Scarlatina. Second Year and part of Team CFVY." Velvet replied.

"How are your ears feeling?"

"They still hurt." Velvet said as she rubbed her ears.

"Here, let me help." I said as my time powers tor reverse time on Velvet's injuries. "There. How do your ears feel now?"

"They feel better. How?" Velvet questioned me. "Is that your semblance?"

"No, not quite. I can control the flow of time. Why don't you sit down with my friends and I for a little bit?" I offered. Velvet agreed and we made our way back to everyone else. I sat back down between Yang and Blake, as Velvet sat next to Blake.

"That was atrocious of him." Pyrrha said with venom. "I despise people like him."

"You're not the only one." Blake and I said together.

"It must be hard to be a faunus." Yang said as she placed her head on her hand.

(Timeskip)
*Y/N's POV*

"Yes, yes, prior to the Faunus Rights Revolution, or more popularly more known as the Faunus War, humankind was quite, quite animate about centralizing faunus population in Menagerie." Doctor Oobleck zooms by while drinking his coffee. "Now, while this must feel like ancient history to many of you. It's imperative to remember that these are relatively recent events. Why the repercussions of the uprising can still be seen to this day. Now, have any among you been subjugated or discriminated because of your faunus heritage?"

There were some that raised their hands, especially Velvet in front of us.

"Remember students it is precisely this kind of ignorance that breeds violence. I mean, I mean, just look at what happened to the "White Fang." Now, which one of you young scholars can tell me what many theorized to be the turning point in the third year of the war?"

"The Battle of Fort Castle." Weiss answered.

"Precisely, and who can tell me the advantage the faunus had over General Lagune's forces?" Doctor Oobleck asked.

I looked over past my eye and saw Cardin with a small paper football and aimed it at Jaune's head. He flicked it and it hit Jaune's head.

"Hey." Jaune said and Doctor Oobleck came zooming at Jaune.

Mr. Arc!" Doctor Oobleck spoke to Jaune. "Finally contributing to class! Excellent! Excellent! What is the answer?"

"Uh... the answer... the advantage... uh the faunus had over the guy's stuff... uh... Binoculars!" Jaune said.

"Huh?" I said as I looked over and say Pyrrha trying to help Jaune, but the way she was trying to help Jaune wasn't the best way. She had her hands over her eyes similar to binoculars. Everyone began to laugh as Pyrrha facepalmed. I leaned over to Pyrrha and whispered to her.

"I know you were trying to help Jaune, but you did show what looked like binoculars." I whispered to Pyrrha. She thought about it and facepalmed again. I patted her shoulder.

"Very funny, Mr. Arc. Cardin, perhaps you would care to share your thoughts on the subject?" Doctor Oobleck spoke to Cardin.

"Well, I know it's a lot easier to train an animal than a soldier." Cardin replied as Doc. Oobleck shook his head. I did the same and looked at him with Pyrrha.

"You're not the most open-minded of individuals are you, Cardin?" Pyrrha rhetorically asked Cardin.

"What you got a problem?" Cardin asked.

"Besides your low-toned, high and mighty, unintelligent head, You're everyone's problem." I said

"What was that?" Cardin questions me.

"I have the answer," Pyrrha said getting between Cardin and I. "It's night-vision. Many faunus are known to have nearly perfect sight in the dark."

"General Lagune was inexperienced and made the mistake of trying to ambush the faunus in their sleep. His massive army was outmatched and the General was captured," Blake added in. "Perhaps if you'd paid attention in class, he wouldn't have been remembered as such a failure."

Many "ooh's" went off in the background as I laughed hard and sent a low-five to Blake. She complied with my low-five. Cardin stood up with his fists up but I stopped him.

"Do you want to experience the same pain from earlier?" I threatened Cardin.

"Mr. Winchester, Mr. Rose. That is enough and please take your seats." Doctor Oobleck told the both of us.

"My apologies, Doctor." I apologized and sat down with Blake rubbing my shoulder. I looked at her and we both smiled. I heard Weiss clearing her throat behind me as I handed her a fist bump, and she returned it. I had to show her how to do it before and it was slightly awkward the first time. Jaune was chuckling from the sick burn Blake gave Cardin. Heck, I was still chuckling about it.

"Mr. Winchester, Mr. Arc, you both will see me after class for additional readings," Doctor Oobleck told Jaune and drinks his coffee. "Now, moving on."

The rest of the class went on until the bell rang. I couldn't find the moments to take notes. I followed Blake and Weiss.

"Hey, Blake, Weiss?" I grabbed Blake and Weiss's attention.

"Yes, (Y/N)?" Weiss replied.

"Did you guys take better notes from Doctor Oobleck's class?" I asked them.

"Yeah, why?" Blake asked.

"He was talking so fast, I could barely keep up with what he was saying." I replied to Blake.

"Yeah, we took better notes." Blake chipped in.

"Am I able to see them, please?" I asked the two, almost begging.

"You don't have to beg, (Y/N). I'll show you my notes." Blake replied.

"The same goes for me." Weiss added in.

"Thanks, guys." I thanked them while pulling them into a hug. The three of us had a small laugh until I saw Jaune being pulled by Pyrrha.

"Hey, you two head back to the dorm. I'll be right back, okay?" I told them both.

"Where are you going?" Weiss asked.

"I say Jaune being pulled by Pyrrha. I'm just gonna see what's up. I'll meet you both back at the dorm, and I believe it's Yang's turn this time." I replied to Weiss as I ran off and got to a stairway that lead up to the roof and I heard Jaune and Pyrrha talking until Jaune said something I wasn't expecting.

"I wasn't really accepted into Beacon." I heard Jaune say.

"What do you mean?" Pyrrha asked.

"I mean I didn't go to combat school. I didn't pass any tests. I didn't earn my spot at this academy," Jaune went on. "I lied. I got my hands on some fake transcripts and I lied."

"What?" Pyrrha shockingly asked. "But why?"

"Because this is what I always wanted to be. My father, my grandfather, and his father before him were all warriors. They were heroes. I wanted to be one too. I was just never good enough."

"Then let me help you."

"I don't want help! I don't want to be the damsel in distress! I want to be the hero!"

"Jaune... I..."

I'm tired of being the lovable idiot stuck in the tree, while his friends fight for their lives. Don't you understand? If I can't do this on my own, than what good am I? Just leave me alone. Okay?"

"If that's what you think is best..." Was all Pyrrha had to say and walked past me. She saw me and she was almost tearing up. I wiped her tears away and brought her into a hug. She let her emotions out as I rubbed her back. I could hear Cardin talking to Jaune, since he overheard their conversation and now has Jaune with blackmail. Pyrrha couldn't hear them over her crying.

I looked at Pyrrha and she was done crying and went over to her. "You okay, Pyrrha?"

"No..." Pyrrha sadly replied. "I want to help Jaune, but he doesn't want my help. He's-"

"I know," I interrupted Pyrrha. "He's letting his pride and stubbornness cloud his judgement. Pyrrha, head back to your dorm. I'm going to have a small talk with Jaune."

"Okay, but go easy on him." Pyrrha said as she walks away.

"Don't worry. I won't hurt him."

"Okay," Pyrrha said with a smile. "Thank you, Y/N. You really a good friend."

"You too." I replied to Pyrrha and she walked away.
