Minewt AU-Part 1
Yes, I'm turning into one of those authors. . .
Minho finished fixing his and Newt's coffee and stuck the pot in the sink to rinse out later. He brought the two mugs over to the kitchen table where Newt was reading the newspaper and eating some poached eggs and toast. He looked up as Minho set the steaming drink in front of him and smiled.
"Thanks, love," he said before taking a sip.
"Anything interesting?" Minho asked taking a seat and biting into a piece of bacon.
"The groundbreaking for the new college was yesterday," Newt responded. "Apparently the governor and some important people from the school system came."
"That's cool, I guess."
"Erm. . . the knowledge bowl team at the middle school placed third in the state," he flipped through the paper a searching for something interesting.
They talked about a few more things happening in town until Newt had to leave to go to work. He grabbed his laptop case and a few rolled up papers with some designs. He came up and kissed Minho on the cheek as he cleaned the dishes from breakfast.
Minho smiled and said, "See you tonight."
"Love you," Newt said as he left the house.
Newt was an interior designer for small businesses. He also played guitar and sang backup in a band that played in a family restaurant on weekends. Minho, however, taught history and was head of the yearbook at the high school, which means he has most of the summer off.
After he finished the dishes, he decided to get a head start on his lesson plans for next year because the state changes the standards every year, for some reason.
It was almost lunch when there was a knock at the door. Minho stood up and opened the door and saw a couple of state troopers standing there.
"Can I help you?" Minho asked, getting a sick feeling in his stomach.
"Are you Minho Park?" one of them asked.
"Yes."
"We need to talk to you."
*****
Minho sat in the uncomfortable hospital chairs, staring at the ground. His mind was racing with worry as he waited for the doctor to come out and talk to him. Newt had been in a car accident. Someone had run a stop light and was currently at the police station. He was fine. It was Newt that was hurt.
"Mr. Park?" Minho looked up at the doctor who beckoned for him to follow her.
"How is he?" he asked once they were out of the crowded waiting room.
"Well, it looks like he's going to live. There was no internal damage, no broken bones, but he's a little bruised and he has a concussion," she said.
Minho sighed in relief, "Can I see him?"
"In a minute. The windshield shattered and some glass shards got into his eyes," she said, biting her lip. "We got all of it out with a minor emergency surgery, but his corneas are scratched pretty badly. We won't know how bad his vision loss will be until he wakes up."
Minho was quiet for a minute, "Is he going to be blind?"
"Hopefully not. With proper treatment, he can probably get by with strong glasses, but there's a possibility that it'll get worse instead of better over time," she gave him a sympathetic look. "You can sit with him until he wakes up."
*****
Minho scanned the numbers by the doors until he found Newt's room. He took a deep breath and opened the door softly. The curtains were drawn and he could see the faint outline of his husband sleeping in the bed.
The flicked on the lamp in the corner like the doctor said he could and sat down in the chair beside the bed. He looked at Newt and felt tears prickle in the corners of his eyes.
There was a purple bruise on his jaw and a cut on his cheek was taped up. An IV was stuck into his arm and something was monitoring his heartbeat. But the worst thing was the white bandage that wrapped around his head that covered his eyes.
Minho made no move to wipe away the tear that ran down his cheek and he gently took Newt's hand in his. He ran his thumb over the back of Newt's hand sighed.
He had already called Sonya, who was making the four-hour drive from the city to come see her brother. All they could do was wait.
*****
Minho had almost fallen asleep when he felt Newt squeeze his hand back, "Newt? Baby, can you hear me?"
"Minho?" Newt asked hoarsely. "What's going on?"
"You were in a car accident," Minho said gently. "You're fine, you're at the hospital. Sonya's going to be here in an hour or so."
"Was anyone else hurt?" Minho smiled at how selfless Newt was.
"No. The other guy ran a stoplight and he was at the police station last I heard."
"Minho?" Newt asked.
"Yes, baby?"
"Why can't I see anything?"
Minho was silent for a moment, "Some glass got in your eyes. Once you're a little better they're going to run some more tests on your vision."
"I want to see you," Newt said.
"And I want to see you're beautiful eyes," Minho said, hoping he didn't sound like he wanted to cry. He kissed the back of Newt's hand softly, "I want to see the way they sparkle when you laugh. But, for now, I want you to rest. If you want, you can go back to sleep, but I'm going to be right here."
"Minho?" Newt asked, his voice sounding a little sleepy.
"Yes?"
"If I go blind, we finally have an excuse to get a dog."
Minho smiled at Newt's attempt to lighten the mood, "Sure, baby. We can get a dog."
"I like golden retrievers," Newt said. "Can we get a golden retriever?"
"Hm," Minho said like he was contemplating it. "I don't know, I'm kind of partial to German shepherds."
"Golden retrievers are cuter, though," Newt said, his voice drifting off as his breathing evened out into sleep.
Minho kissed him on the cheek, "Golden retriever it is, then."
*****
"Hey, how's he doing?" Sonya asked as she walked in.
"He woke up for a few minutes an hour ago," Minho told her. "Dr. Philips said she wanted to do a couple of tests the next time he wakes up. Just to check on a few things. They're going to check his vision in a couple of days."
Sonya nodded and took the other chair, setting down a duffle bag, "I stopped by your place and grabbed some of your things. I figured you're probably not leaving here for a while."
"Thanks," he said. She was right, anyway. He wasn't planning on leaving until Newt could.
"I called Mum and Dad on the way down and they're going to try and get some time off to come over from England. They won't be able to come for Christmas later, but they want to get here."
"Thanks for coming," Minho said. "I know you and Aris were supposed to go to the mountains this weekend."
"It can wait," Sonya said. "Aris's boss wasn't happy with him being gone this weekend, anyway."
"Still, thank you."
It's one am, so this is going to be a two-parter. This will be updated eventually. Hopefully tomorrow, but very possibly next year.
