happiness - sonarriet (tmr bingo)
AAAA SONARRIET.
for tmr bingo prompt 'birthday'
Sonya often wonders about her past life.
Did she have any siblings? Did she have any pets? What was her original name? When was her birthday? What were her parents like?
Of course, she never got any answers. Answering such questions was practically impossible for any of the past-WICKED prisoners.
"I wonder what I got for one of my birthdays." She wonders, more to herself than anybody else.
But Harriet is, and has been, always by her side, so of course she hears. She smiles softly at the girl - no, woman; she's strong and amazing - beside her. "You keep asking stuff about your birthday."
Sonya folds her arms with a slight pout, repositioning her legs on the sand to cross them. "Well, I want a birthday present. All the people here get them and I want one."
Harriet laughs under her breath at the immature behaviour, and raises an eyebrow. "What do you want as a birthday present, though?"
She cocks her head to the side and ponders over the question for a moment. "Happiness."
"Happiness?"
"Yeah. I want something that would make me smile whenever I look at it. Something that'd make me happy. Maybe it'd remind me of someone, or something I've been through and it'd make me proud." She puts her hands on her knees and closes her eyes, a content smile on her face. "What about you?"
Harriet shakes her head, disbelief and amusement laced in the action. "You're insane, you know that?" The only response she gets is a laugh, so she decides to stop thinking about her best friend's insanity, but more so on her own response to the question she was asked. "Um. I have no idea." She shrugs. "A dog?"
Sonya snickers. "I give you a whole speech and you just say you want a dog?"
"Well, a dog would make me happy, would it not? It'd remind me of the person who got me it, and it's cute. And it'd protect me." She grins, stretching her legs out. She doesn't lie - a dog would make her extremely happy, and she'd smile whenever she saw it.
Clearly, Sonya's embodiment of 'happiness' doesn't take dog-form, because she furrows her brows. "That's not what I meant. I meant something that's... personal. It means something between you and the person who got you the present."
"A dog is personal!" Harriet argues, voice borderline teasing. "If you got me a dog right now, it'd mean something between us because I've told you I want a dog."
"Okay." She rolls her eyes, pausing a moment to try and think of another argument - something she had always done. The darker-skinned smiled at the thought of people's annoyance after Sonya took a minute to respond. She herself had become patient, but other's - especially those who didn't know the blonde - got rather irritated. "A dog is going to die. A personal gift is immortal."
"What if you, I dunno, burn it? That's not immortal."
"Well, the essence of it is still there, isn't it?"
Harriet doesn't even try to argue - she knows she won't ever win against Sonya.
——
Harriet watches as Sonya bursts out laughing, being thrown under the water by one of the boys from Group A. She still hasn't learnt all their names - all she needs is Sonya, in her eyes.
She knows a few of them, of course. She can spot Thomas nudging Gally by the bonfire on the sand, and she smiles at the way Gally elbows him back, annoyed frown etched on his face that doesn't quite match his eyes because they're shining with such admiration.
And, of course, she knows the boy next to her - Minho.
"Minho?" Harriet starts, not really knowing why she's chosen this specific time to try and attempt a heartfelt conversation.
Minho turns to face her and quirks an eyebrow, to say 'go on'.
"Have you ever wondered about your.. you know, birthday?" She cringes inwardly at herself - does she have to be so bad at starting conversations? She always had admired Sonya for being so damn good at being nice to people - Harriet was horrendous at it.
The male furrows his brows. "Uh.. no. Not one bit."
This might be why the pair get along so well - their witty sense of humour, and their lack of care about the world when it came to things other than survival. Harriet supposes in her past life, she might have been a bit more carefree, and that she's only so uptight because she's been scared out of her skin most days.
Harriet just blinks blankly and turns to face the sea, once again watching as Sonya splashes someone else who's sat on the sand - Thomas, who yelps and jumps onto Gally. She cracks a smile herself at them. "I mean, neither. Sonya brought it up."
"Huh." Minho grins and she could not be more suspicious if she tried. "You really like her, don't you?"
She looks at him with narrowed eyes and, ignoring the way the grains get in between her nails, plays with the sand in her hands. "I mean, yeah. She's my best friend." She looks back at the blonde, the perfect way the setting sun hits her face and the perfect way her plaited wet hair sits behind her, making her look beautiful. "She's all I ever knew for a while."
Something changes in Minho, and he goes from teasing to being a bit more serious. He looks over at Thomas and lets out a chuckle. "I know what you mean."
Neither say anything for a moment, until the male clasps his hands together, almost making Harriet scream out of pure shock. "Anyway! Why'd you bring it up?"
She shrugs, like it's not a big deal, and like it's not been keeping her up at night. "She said she wonders when her birthday is. She wanted a present."
"What type of present?" Minho smiles. "Tomboy was talking about birthdays - we could sort something out for both of them."
Harriet laughs at the nickname and elbows her friend's abdomen. "You definitely like him." She shakes her head in amusement when the other opens his mouth like a fish and just blinks at her.
"I do not!-"
She shushes him. "I don't care about your boner over Thomas. We're talking about Sonya here - men are gross." She rolls her eyes when Minho sticks his tongue out at her. "She said she wanted happiness."
"Happiness?" She almost laughs at the similarity of his response to her own a few days ago.
"Happiness." Harriet confirms. "She didn't ask for anything from me, specifically, but I want to get something for her. I don't know!" She groans. "What makes her happy?"
Minho smiles softly at her and tilts her head away from facing his to face Sonya, just in time to see the blonde wave at them, grinning from ear to ear.
"I think you make her pretty happy, Harriet."
——
"Hi." Harriet blurts out after running up to catch Sonya, who was walking alone on the beach - something she did everyday.
Sonya spins around, laughing at her friend's heavy panting. "Hi. What did you want?" Her hair is loose for once, and it's pretty.
"Uh... happy birthday."
The blonde blinks at her. Twice. Thrice. Four times. "It's my birthday?" She gasps and her hand shoots up to her mouth. "You found out my birthday?!"
Harriet cringes - visibly, apparently, because Sonya frowns. "No. I don't know it. I'm sorry?"
A disheartened expression flashes across her face, but it's gone as soon as it arrives. A small smile is back on her face. "Oh. That's not surprising whatsoever." She laughs and Harriet wants to die suddenly. "What did you mean 'happy birthday' then?"
She chews her lips nervously. "I wanted to get you something, birthday or not, but I didn't know what made you happy. Minho said I make you happy, so I got you myself. So, here I am."
Sonya doesn't reply at first, but then her head is thrown back and she bursts out laughing. "Oh my god. You're bloody amazing."
Harriet doesn't really know what to do. She assumes she's completely messed up and she wants the sand to be transformed into quick sand.
But then Sonya leans forward and pecks her on her cheek, and now she wants the sand to kill her for a different reason. "You're also cute."
"So are you."
Sonya hums. "Wanna go for a walk?"
Harriet manages a small smile and nods. "A birthday walk?"
The blonde grabs her by the hand and starts to walk. "A birthday walk."
