Newt

Tossing and turning, you fail to even get even an hour of sleep before you find yourself wide awake once again.

The bed feels uncomfortable, but only because no one's ever used it before, as Newt says.

You sigh and sit up, obviously you weren't going to fall asleep anytime soon. So you head out into The Glade as quietly as possible so the boys won't hear you. If Alby catches  you sneaking around at night, there would be serious consequences.

But things couldn't get worse than they already are.

You make your way onto the soft grass, where you sit with your arms hugging your knees, tightly pulled up against your chest. The cool breeze feels great on your exposed skin. This calms you down a bit.

You raise your head back to look up at the night sky, gigantic balls of exploding gas, tiny compared to the vast sky but only because they are billions of light years away, or stars, light up the never ending canvas of dark blue. The moon shines even more brightly, a crescent shape that reminds you of smiling lips.

The wind picks up your hair, gently blowing it onto your face but you don't bother to move it away.

"Can't sleep, greenie?" Newt appears, drawing you back to reality. Or what seems like reality at the moment.
You shake your head in response.

"You'll get used to the bed" he jokes knowing the more serious reason why you can't sleep. It's your first night in The Glade, with no memory of anything before the box, you can't even recall your name.

"Don't worry, it's the one thing they let you keep." Alby had told you earlier in a futile attempt to ease you.

"I- I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't be out here, but I needed air." You finally speak, your voice barely a whisper but you know Newt had heard you because he shifts closer to you and places his hand over yours to reassure you. A small gesture, but one that brings a smile to your face nonetheless.

You finally face Newt to see he's already facing you. He takes his hand in yours and gently squeezes it.

"You don't need water to feel as though you're drowning" Newt says, drawing circles on the back of your hand with his thumb. You instantly felt calmer, the tight pain in your chest hurt less and the knot in your stomach disappeared.

"Maybe it won't be so bad in The Glade" you smile at Newt who immediately returns the gesture.

You peel your eyes open to see the sun rays peeping through the window. You're about to fall back asleep when you hear the sound of someone snoring softly. You slightly turn to see someone in a hammock, blonde hair visible.

Newt.

You smile shyly when you realise you're lying in his bed. You remember the short conversation you had with him last night and him offering his bed to you because you couldn't fall asleep on yours.

You don't want to wake him up, but you want to thank him for being so kind to you.
So you try your best to be silent and creep out of the bed.

You look at Newt, really look at him, you notice how young and peaceful he looks while he's asleep. Awake, Newt seemed so much older, like he was always thinking about something important, like someone's life depended on him. Being second in command does that to you.

You feel something bubble up inside you, your chest start to hurt but not like last night. This time it was more cheerful.

You shake your head, pushing away the sudden change of thoughts in your mind, you don't even know him!
You sigh, gently walking back to the bed and lying down once again.

"Did you sleep okay?" You hear Newt grumble groggily. You feel bad for waking him up but happy to be able to talk to him.

"Yeah, I did" you reply with the biggest smile on your face.
