Newt [38]

"Listen, love. I'm not one to pry in others business because I wouldn't want anyone involved in mine." He pulled a chair up beside Y/N in the maproom and pushed her dinner in front of her. "But you need to tell us how we can help you. If you don't want to say what's going on, that's fine. You have to tell me what you need, though."

"I don't know—" She closed her eyes and lowered her head. She truly didn't know what she needed right now. All of this was so confusing and she was scared. A few weeks ago, she'd passed out while running in the maze. The next thing she knew, she was back in the medjack hut waking up three days later thanks to Minho having found her. In that time, she'd gotten a lot of memories back. In the same time though, had become riddled with horrifying nightmares that never went away.

Newt lift his hand up as if he were going to reach over the edge of the table and grab Y/N's hand, but he hesitated. "You've been hiding in here for weeks, only leaving for the maze in the morning. Minho says you've been slowing down lately and aren't focused. Something is wrong."

Y/N wished she could just show Newt what was going on instead of having to explain it. Her head was so scrambled since that day in the maze and had no idea why. The only explanation was the creators, but even then, what was the point of trying to make sense of it? They lived in a stone box surrounded by a maze and once every month some random person was sent up to join their midst. Anything could happen here.

"I just need to sleep," She found a manageable goal, admitting some kind of defeat. "I haven't had more than a couple hours rest since the nightmares started—"

"Nightmares?" Newt intervened and looked for further elaboration. "More than normal?"

"Yeah," Y/N whispered with a little squeak. "Bad ones. They're so real and I don't know whether I'm dreaming or—that's why I stay here, in the maproom. I know then that if I'm anywhere else, it's not real."

Newt knit his brows and scanned Y/N's exhausted face. It made sense now why she stayed here. If she could eliminate herself from being anywhere else while during waking hours, she'd be easier able to identify when in a dream. Though, she shouldn't have to. Newt could tell that all of the time in here was isolating and she was becoming lonely. That loneliness surely was only furthering her distortion of reality and of the people around her. In her own mind right now, she probably thought there was no one she could reach out to for help.

"Here, how about this," Newt put his hands on his legs and rubbed them, releasing some nervous energy. He'd obviously forgotten to breathe because his cheeks were ever so slightly tinged red now and he needed a second to take in a sharp breath. "You can stay with me tonight and see if anything changes. If not, we'll try something else."

"No, it's okay." Y/N swiped at her nose. "I don't want to keep you awake."

Newt leaned back a little and raised his chin, looking to the girl with a lifted brow. "You don't think I've already been losing sleep over this?"

Y/N paused. She thought for a moment then looked up to meet his eyes. "What?"

"Yes, Y/N," Newt now leaned forward and this time actually reached for Y/N's hand. "I care about you. I'm worried and I want this to get better but I'm not letting you fight it alone, alright?"

The girl stared at her hand in his. It felt so foreign. Yet, at the same time, her entire being knew it was what she needed. Right there, she nearly broke down entirely. Normally, she'd continue to fight Newt and refuse his help. But right now, she was too tired to even try. She was happy to take any suggestion he gave. Though it felt impossible, Y/N tried to gather herself for just a while longer. Gripping that hand in hers, she nod and whispered a quiet "okay."

"Alright," Newt let out a breath of relief. "Is there anything you need before we go?"

"Uhm," Y/N looked around tiredly and thought for a moment. "No, we just need to cover up the map."

With that, Newt lift himself up and made sure Y/N stood steadily as well. They worked together to cover the massive table with the old sheet carefully and then head out the door and into the Glade. It was dark now and Newt had to try really hard to stop his feet from crossing over themselves.

He felt a little awkward walking back across the Glade toward the homestead. He swung his arms as he looked down to Y/N and then away again. "Well, if nothing else, at least it'll be warmer in the homestead."

Y/N forced a small smile. "Definitely." She agreed quietly. "Thank you for doing this. I've been—well, I've felt really alone the past few weeks."

Those words hit Newt hard. He knew that feeling of being alone all too well. It was something he'd never wish upon anyone else, no matter how awful of a person they were. And of all the people in the world, Y/N was the least deserving of it. He was glad she felt comfortable enough to confide in him now, though. "Well, we're here for you and you're not getting rid of us."

Y/N laughed a little. "Awh, but what if I wanted to get rid of you?"

"Then too. Bloody. Bad." Newt poked her shoulder with each word. She reached up and swat at his hand as she giggled.

Newt followed her into his room in the homestead, a little less nervous and a little more lighthearted now. When he turned around, Y/N was already at the window looking outside. Her body was stiff and she had her arms crossed over herself.

"You okay?" Newt asked, taking off his shoes and tossing them beside Y/N's.

The girl turned around with an anxious look. "Maybe I should go back."

Newt furrowed his brows and then shook his head. "Everything is going to be okay. C'mon." He lift up the blanket on the bed and motioned toward it.

Y/N eyed the bed nervously. She then looked to Newt again. "What if I hurt you by accident?"

Newt reached out for her hand and pulled her close. He looked her right in the eyes and squeezed her hand. "You won't."

Y/N's frantic eyes softened slightly. "Ok."

With that, she let go of his hand and climbed into the bed. Though, when she did, Newt was once again a little confused. She went all the way to the end of it and then sat with her back against the wall. Right now, Newt didn't want to question or fight it. All that mattered was that she was here, no longer alone and within arms reach. So, he climbed into the bed as well and covered himself with the blanket. Y/N had refused it when he offered, so he didn't force her to take that either.

"Goodnight, Y/N." He yawned. "If you need anything, just let me know. Don't worry about waking me up."

Y/N nod and let out a deep breath. "Thanks Newt."

There was no way he was sleeping. Tonight, it was his job to monitor her. He needed to know if there was improvements in her sleep tonight or of things got worse. Because, if he knew they were better, he'd have the right to say it was best she continue to stay. If, by chance, things went horribly wrong, he'd be able to think about how to make them better.

It was hardly five minutes of ruminating in silence when Newt heard Y/N's breathing steady into an even pattern. In the dim light, he looked up to find her with softened features and head dipped ever so slightly. She was actually asleep.

He waited a little while. If the nightmares were to return, they'd be here within minutes. So far, they hadn't made a return. Though, he noticed her fingers flinching ever so slightly.

Not wanting it to get any worse, Newt made a bold decision. He got himself up and clambered down to the end of the bed as well. He positioned himself beside her and rest his back against the wall. In no way shape or form was this comfortable. That in itself showed Newt just how much she'd been struggling to survive. If she was exhausted enough to sleep sitting upright against a wall, he couldn't imagine what the past few weeks had been like. At least now she felt safe enough to actually close her eyes and allow herself to succumb to sleep.

Carefully, in hopes to not wake her, he spread the blanket over both of their bodies and lifted it up as high as he could. For a brief moment, the flinching had gotten worse and more extreme but the second he put the blanket over her it stopped. He wasn't quite sure if she'd woken, but her stillness told him things were okay.

Sitting there, Newt could hear his own blood pumping around. He was painfully aware of every movement he made and sound that came from his body. But, he knew every second spent here was more much needed rest for Y/N and therefore was worth it.

Sitting there, he wasn't sure how much time had passed. However, when he felt Y/N's body limply fall down into his lap, he was certainly more aware of time than he'd ever been in his life. Unsure of what to do he panicked for a moment until he managed to take in a breath that slowed his mind. He lift his left hand and ran it up and down her back ever so gently.

Distracted, he was taken off guard by the feeling of warmth resonating in his right hand which lay at his side. For a moment it tingled until some pressure was finally applied. Y/N had grabbed it.

Newt nearly broke down in tears. He would have done absolutely anything to have what he did right now a few years ago. If he had just had a hand to hold to let him know he wasn't alone, maybe things would have been different. But, right now, he was just glad to be alive and to be able to be here with Y/N. He wanted her to be better and back to that normal self that he missed so much.

He tried so hard to keep himself from crying. So far he was managing, but it was difficult.

Y/N intertwined her fingers with his and Newt felt the word slow as she did so. "Thank you." She whispered.
