Newt [11.2]
The boys eyes flickered open to the sky beginning to turn a dark shade of purple. The Glade smelled of fresh dew from the rainfall, and he immediately felt the cold which resided from the night. His admiration for the surroundings was broken when he heard some snickering from behind him. Newt turned his head to see Thomas, Minho, and Alby all standing together above him. His eyes met Alby's whose face was plastered with anger. The tension was broken as Minho leaned in.
"Are you sure she's still alive? If she is, I think she might be knocked out from your nasty smell." The boy cracked, trying not to laugh absurdly loud as the girl was still sleeping.
"Bloody hell, Minho. Shush!" He said back groggily, looking down to the girl who was contently sleeping. Alby cleared his throat.
"You. Council hall, now." Alby retorted condescendingly.
"A-Alby, she's sleeping." Newt complained.
"Now!" The tall man yelled back, walking away. Newt awkwardly got out of the hammock, attempting not to wake the girl who was glued to his body. To his surprise, he managed to get out of the hammock without waking her, and he walked shamefully towards the meeting room.
The lanky boy shyly opened the door to the small building to find Alby sitting inside.
"What were you thinking, Newt?" He asked sternly.
"I-I don't know... I'm afraid of storms and I just..." He paused, locking eyes with Alby.
"When she was with me, It all went away, Alby. I mean the feeling I had when I..." Alby stopped the boy from continuing.
"You're telling me she made you feel better?" He asked in disbelief, standing up.
"Y-yeah." The boy cowered. Though he knew he could trust Alby with the knowledge of his dark past, it still felt uncomfortable to bring up.
"In that case, I'm sorry I got so upset with you. I figured you took advantage of having to share the hammock last night. I just don't want any conflict between the other boys." He said, rubbing his head.
"I understand." Newt said back. An awkward silence fell over them.
"I was thinking that maybe you and Y/N should share a room in the homestead once Gally is done with the changes." He said suddenly.
"R-really?" Newt was taken by surprise.
"Yes. I trust you and the other boy's respect you. And if she is making you feel better, then it's probably the best option—" He stopped.
"Thank you, Alby." Newt said, and Alby nodded. Just as Newt placed his hand on the door, Alby spoke up.
"Hey, Newt?" He asked, the blonde haired boy turned around.
"Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you." He said. Newt nodded with a soft smile. Ever since he jumped from that wall, Alby was always at his side. But, it seemed like to matter what he did, Newt never got better. He just existed, taking care of everyone else. However, now Alby could see a change in the blonde. Maybe, just maybe, his best medicine was her.
When Newt found his way back to the hammocks, most of the Gladers had risen and we're off to breakfast. To both his dismay, and slight relief, his hammock was empty. The good news was that if he failed to confess his feelings, he could fall back on the fact that he had to tell her about sharing a room sooner or later. So, he tossed the hoodie from the night before into the hammock and walked off into the Glade.
It was as if everyones attention was stuck on Newt. Some boys snickered, some whistled mockingly, and others muttered things under their breath. He understood where Alby was coming from now. Most of the boys wouldn't really care about the sharing situation, but some would begin to resent Newt for it. But after seeing as how she somehow managed to suppress the darkness in his heart by simply laying at his side, the jealousy of the other boys was the least of Newt's worries.
"Mornin' Newt," Frypan said softly as he handed Newt his breakfast. "How'd you sleep?" A smirk grew on his face.
"Shut up, Fry." Newt grumbled, but also let a small, sly smile rise on his face. Frypan, just like Alby, Minho, and Thomas knew all too well of his infatuation with Y/N. Before he left, he turned back. "You see where Y/N got off to?"
Frypan raised a brow and shrugged. "Dunno."
Stepping outside of the kitchen, the sun was nearly fully risen, lighting up the Glade in a way which made Newt smile. It was terrible living here, but there were small moments in time which he could appreciate the home they'd built. He scanned around, looking from table to table, but all he saw was boys. Then, out of the corner of his eye, he looked to the edge of the gardens and there Y/N sat, up against one of the larger trees. Y/N caught his gaze, and even from the distance away, she could see his face flush slightly. He didn't seem to move, so Y/N waved for him to join. His heart began to beat erratically as each step brought him closer to the girl. When he situated himself at her side, he felt as if he might faint. The morning sun hit her face as she sent a warm smile, the light hitting her eyes and changing their colour.
"Morning." He croaked, looking away shyly.
"Terrified of thunder. Who would've guessed." Y/N laughed lightly.
"Yeah." Newt poked at the food on his plate absentmindedly. "Thanks for... you know."
Y/N nodded. "What'd you want to talk about last night?" She asked.
Newt's stomach dropped and he officially lost his appetite. He was hoping she'd forgotten about the entire thing. "Hmm?" He hummed, hoping she'd drop the conversation.
"Last night, you wanted to tell me something? Alby told you to shut it?" She raised a brow in question.
"Right! Yea—" He began but immediately all of the words in his head got jumbled up. "Well, I have two things to tell you."
Y/N stared at the boy blankly, waiting for him to speak up. But Newt was caught between telling her what he really wanted to and what he had to. He wanted to tell her that she'd somehow made everything awful in his mind melt away, but what he had to tell her was that they'd be sharing a room.
"Y/N!!" A voice hollered out frantically, causing the girl to jump up. Jeff was running towards her with bandages in his hands.
"What's going on?" She asked. To Newt's surprise, she was calm, even this early in the morning.
"Gally stabbed his fork into Minho's shucking hand and he won't let us touch him. Says he's fine but is bleeding all over the table." Jeff explained in frustration. This was a regular occurrence with Minho when he got hurt. He wouldn't let Clint or Jeff near him, but the minute Y/N showed up, he was suddenly obedient.
"Uhm, we'll talk later. Ok? I'm really sorry—" Y/N apologized sadly to the blonde. Newt couldn't help but smile at her apologies and waved her off, picking up the plate she'd tossed on the ground.
While Newt sat finishing off his breakfast, his ears were filled with angry grunts and complaints from the boys. Thomas screamed at Gally for disrespecting the fork, Minho threw threats at the builder, and Alby was scolding everyone. But Y/N just sat there, cleaning up the wound and smiling to herself. Newt found it adorable.
As the day went on, it was like he couldn't get her alone. He tried at their first break, but Minho came crashing into the medjack hut, his bandages seeping with blood.
"Should't you be running?" Newt questioned, slightly aggravated. He was just about to tell her.
"I was going to bleed to death, shuckface. You really want THE keeper of the runners dropping dead?" Minho asked.
"You would've been ok, Minho," Y/N laughed. "But it was smart coming back."
"See!" Minho snapped. "Shebean says I'm smart."
Then, at lunch he tried again. He went and sat at the tree, awaiting the girl, but the moment he saw her approaching, Alby called out. "Y/N! I need your help with the supplies!"
Over the occasional lunch, Alby would count supplies and Y/N was just about the only other Glader he trusted to help. Newt tossed his head back in frustration, slamming it against the tree bark. Was the world this against him?
Evening finally came, and at the same time the runners returned from the maze, Y/N exited the medjack hut. She waved to Minho, checked on his hand, and then turned her attention to the gardens. Newt realized he'd been staring and fumbled with the shovel in his hand, diverting his attention to the ground. But, then he heard Thomas.
"Pleaaaaase?" He whined, hands on Y/N's shoulders. "Your drawings are so much better than mine."
The girl crossed her arms and looked up to Thomas with a slight smile. "Alright, fine."
Thomas and the girl jogged off to the map room together, a bounce in the boys step. Newt, yet again, cursed under his breath. Maybe he was being plotted against. Y/N helped Thomas fairly often with mapping the maze since Minho always scolded him for his terrible drawings. But, Newt really needed to talk to her, and the sun was already beginning to set.
Newt skipped dinner since the girl hadn't returned from the map room with Thomas yet. He sat, tending to some of the smaller plants in the gardens, looking up the edge of the forest every so often. Sure enough, after a while, she and Thomas appeared. Y/N seemed to be explaining something while Thomas stared attentively, almost like he wasn't even listening. Luckily, he saw Thomas tug her towards the kitchen and the blonde raced over to join them as quickly as possible.
"You haven't eaten yet?" Y/N asked.
"Wasn't hungry." Newt shrugged. It was a lie. His stomach was grumbling like no other, but he wanted to wait for her.
"Hopefully you are now, shuckface." Minho handed a plate of the now cooled off food to Newt. The group made their way outside and sat at one of the tables. Unfortunately, Newt had to sit across from the girl and had Minho at his side. There was no way he could tell her now.
"Mkay, maybe now you can tell me now, Newt." Y/N laughed but Newt's face dropped.
"Umm—" Newt muttered. "Maybe later."
"Newt, just tell her." Minho said through a mouthful of food, his fork waving around in the air.
"Careful with your fork!" Thomas jolted a little uncomfortably, causing Minho to freeze. "Don't be like Gally." He was obviously paranoid from this mornings events.
"I'd never be like that shuckface." He said.
"So, Newt?" Y/N raised a brow.
"Well, Alby said that since Gally made all those changes we should—"
Before he could finish, Y/N's name was yet again being screamed out by Jeff. Y/N took in a deep breath, still retaining her calm demeanour. "Gally missed Winston's face and punched a tree! I think he broke his hand!"
"HA!" Minho spat, laughing.
"I'll be back." Y/N rolled her eyes and jumped up from the table, heading to Jeff. Newt was now fuming. Just a few more seconds was all he needed. But, no.
"Woah, you alright Newt?" Minho suddenly sounded concerned, looking to the blonde whose face was flushed red, fists clenched.
"FOR SHUCKS SAKE, Y/N! WE'RE SHARING A ROOM!" After he screamed it out, he instantly regretted it. Sharing a room with the only girl in the Glade was probably something he should've kept under the radar, but everyone within and earshot hear it. Even Gally's cries of pain had subsided over by the bonfire.
"Uhhh, ok?" Y/N furrowed her brows and turned away with Jeff, heading over to Gally. Why Newt had made such a big deal about it an not just told her earlier, she had no clue. The rest of the Gladers turned their attention elsewhere once again, but Thomas and Minho sat with mouths agape.
"You two? Share a room? In the homestead?" Minho questioned.
"Yeah." Newt mumbled.
"You're kidding me. I've gotta share with this shank!" He complained, waving the fork in Thomas' face which nearly gave him a heart attack. "And you get to share with her?!"
Newt was relieved to finally be able to talk to her. After she patched up Gally and everyone else was sent off to bed, she headed into the homestead. Newt's door swung open, and there Y/N stood, just like the night before, with the blanket in her hands. "Gally couldn't get the other bed built yet, so you'll have to share. But that shouldn't be a problem." Alby smiled smugly as he closed the door behind Y/N.
Newt shuffled over as quick as he could to make space for Y/N, the heat rising in his cheeks. He was thankful for the darkness because at least she wouldn't be able to see it. She laid down beside Newt, her face facing his and tossed the blanket over her head. "Sorry I kept disappearing on you today."
"It's not your fault, love." With one rush of bravery, he pushed the blanket away and placed his hand on her face, rubbing his thumb over her cheek. "Apparently I just can't say what I need to quick enough."
Y/N laughed lightly and trembled a little from the cold. "What about the second thing?"
"There was a second thing?" Newt tried to sound oblivious.
"Yeah."
"Right. Well, I guess, it's part of why Alby said we should share a room." He began to explain. Y/N listened attentively. "Last night, I felt... Well, I felt ok."
Y/N moved her head slightly on the pillow, almost as if she were tilting her head in confusion. "Ok as in... those things I felt when I... When I jumped. They went away." He said quietly.
Y/N had always known about Newt's incident, but it was never something they talked about. Just like Alby, she promised to always be there to help when he needed it, but wouldn't talk about it otherwise.
"Really?"
"Yeah." He whispered. In her presence, his hopeless, lost, and broken self seemed to fall together. Once again, Newt wrapped his arms around the body beside him, pulling her in even closer. This time, not out of fear from the thunder overhead. He could feel the girl he was holding breathe slowly, telling him she was now asleep. But he himself could't sleep because he just wanted to hold her. This all still felt too much like a dream to him. Last night, he was sure he'd never have the girl this close to him ever again, and yet, here she was, right in his arms.
