Newt [11.1]
Dinner had finally ended, and the girl could feel sleep put an all familiar weight upon her shoulders.
"Hey, Y/N!" Minho grinned at the girl who was walking clumsily towards the hammocks.
"Hi, Minho." She stopped walking and turned to smile at the boy who was joined by Thomas, both walking briskly towards the homestead.
"Don't got a hammock for the new greenie yet, so last person there's gonna be sleeping in the dirt!" He snickered, brushing past her, breaking into a sprint with Thomas. The girl huffed tiredly. When she arrived to the sleeping area, just as expected, all of the hammocks were claimed except one. Before she could get close, Newt sat down in it, smirking at the girl.
"Too slow, love." He said.
"Shebean's sleeping in the dirt!" Minho shouted out over the other Gladers, the heat beginning to rise in her cheeks. Y/N giggled slightly, looking around at everyone staring at her.
"It's ok, I'll sleep in the watchtower." She smiled, picking up a blanket and pillow which was against the homestead.
The girl turned around proudly, excited to sleep in the tower when she ran right into something. Taking a step back to regain her senses, she looked up to see who it was she ran into, they were like a brick wall. The girl cowered the moment she saw it was Alby, who looked down at her with a condescending glare.
"You, shebean, ain't sleeping in the tower tonight." He took the pillow from the girl and tossed it back against the wall, signalling her to keep the blanket.
"Oh c'mon, Alby." The girl sighed.
"I know," he stood tall, crossing his arms. "But it's gonna be a cold one tonight, I can tell. Might even rain." He started, looking out to the somber sky. "I want everyone wearing socks, hoodies, and pants to bed. Don't need any of you getting ill." He commanded.
"Yes mom!" Minho shouted from the back, receiving laughter in return from everyone else, including Alby. The ruckus was broken when Newt spoke up.
"So what're we gonna do about Y/N? If its gonna be that cold, she can't sleep on the ground." He questioned Alby, propping himself up in the hammock.
"I-I can sleep in the kitchen or something!" The girl jutted in before a worse suggestion was made.
"No can do, shebean. Gally's asked the whole homestead be cleared while he makes those repairs." He muttered.
"You're just gonna have to share with someone." He said, almost sympathetically. An uproar erupted between all of the boys.
"We seriously don't have any other option?" The girl shrunk down awkwardly. Alby grabbed her shoulders, turning her around and beginning to push her, weaving their way through the hammocks.
"Sorry, Y/N, we don't really have any other option."
"So who you gonna share with, Y/N?" Minho asked, and the boys snickered as Alby continued to push her forwards despite her best efforts to stop him by digging her feet into the dirt.
"You can always come share with me!" Minho shouted again, hardly able to breathe from his persistent laughing. He must have thought this was just hilarious.
"Yeah right, Minho. You're the stinkiest shank here!" She barked back.
"Alright - alright." He said between laughs. "Maybe with Thomas here." He said, pointing to the brown haired boy whose cheeks turned pink at the mention.
"Uhhh- no thanks." She said and smiled shyly. Alby continued to push as she and Minho bickered. All of the boys waiting to see who Alby put her with. Amidst their arguing, Y/N realized Alby stopped pushing her. The girl looked down to see Newt lying in the hammock with an awkward grin plastered on his face along with a slight blush. Y/N smiled back uncomfortably, turning her attention to Alby.
"Uhhh-" She fiddled with her fingers.
"You two, share." He turned away.
"He's probably the most reasonable shank here, Y/N. You're welcome!" He shouted back, throwing his arms in the air. The girl turned back to Newt who was now stiffly sitting upright in the hammock, putting on his hoodie as Alby had commanded. The girl gripped the blanket she held tightly.
Alby had it all figured out. Newt had been obsessed with the poor girl since she arrived in the glade. But he couldn't blame him. So, when the opportunity arose, Alby couldn't help but give Newt a chance.
Standing awkwardly, Y/N kicked at the dirt beneath the hammock, causing Newt to huff and being to shuffle around. She looked up sheepishly, and Newt patted the hammock.
"C'mon." Newt tried to smile kindly as he motioned for her to join. The two shuffled around as the small fires in the sleeping area were put out, and the boys began to fall asleep. Y/N and Newt ended up back to back in the hammock, but he still scuffled around uncomfortably.
"What is it?" Y/N whispered to him.
"I don't like this." He said.
"Well, just try to fall asleep." She said back.
"Shhhhush you two, Newt, deal with it!" Minho shouted jokingly, earning a kick from who everyone assumed was Alby as the he whimpered a quiet 'ouch!" Newt groaned again, rolling over in the hammock so his chest was pressed up against her back.
"Seriously?!" Y/N muttered.
"I can't sleep unless I'm on my left side!" He said back quietly.
"You should've mentioned that earlier!" Y/N argued and Newt sighed, rolling his eyes. "But as long as you can sleep." The girl said kindly, despite her discomfort.
"Thanks." Newt said back. Letting out a deep warm breath which the girl could feel on her ear.
Y/N wasn't sure how much time had passed, but the soft sound of Gladers breathing filled her ears, indicating it was long enough for most of the boys to fall asleep. A cold draft came, and she pulled the blanket up to her face. Her nose was ice cold, along with her hands, and she desperately tried to warm them up. Even though Newt lie stiffly beside her, hardly any warmth was emitted off of him. Desperately she pleaded her body to fall asleep to keep the cold at bay, but it didn't come. The tranquil sound of small raindrops falling on the tree canopy above where they slept filled the girl with comfort. The sweet noise distracted her from the body that lie beside her, and although she still wasn't able to sleep, it was like she was in a dream.
Newt breathed as softly as possible, attempting to slow his heart rate down. After all, the girl who made his mind wander everyday was sleeping in the same hammock as him. Something which he had prayed would happen some day, but now feared it. At first, he thought it would be alright, make him happy. But, it was the opposite. It made him miserable. The girl who plagued his thoughts wasn't sleeping beside him by choice, but was forced to share with him. If given a choice, she probably would've slept with Thomas, he thought. Every feeling he could imagine flooded his body, and he couldn't slow his racing mind. This was the perfect opportunity to tell the girl how he felt because he could tell she wasn't able to sleep either. His heart ached, as if it was trying to pull him closer to her. If he didn't do anything now, who knows when his next chance would be. As he grew closer to convincing himself to speak up, his throat ceased and no words left his mouth as his doubts began to grow evermore controlling of him. Even if he did tell her, there's no way they could last in a place like this. As hard as he tried, disconnecting himself from the dreams in his mind to reality was nearly impossible, unable to fathom that she was indeed laying right beside him. Alby made her sleep with him, though, and having her this close for one night was torturous knowing it would never happen again. The boy knew he had to savour the moment, or try and forget about it. Once tomorrow comes, he'd just have live with never having her that close again.
The boys pervasive thoughts were broken when a nearly inaudible sniffle came from the small body in front of him. Newt's attention snapped, and his breathing came to a halt. Before he could plan his actions, his arm reached around the girl, poking her nose. It was ice cold to the touch. He lifted himself up slightly so he could whisper to her.
"Your nose is bloody freezing." He said, a smile rising on his face, knowing she wouldn't be able to see it in the dark.
"Can't sleep?" He asked. Y/N didn't respond immediately, and Newt scrutinized himself for saying such a thing.
"Nope..." Y/N said quietly, trailing off. Silence flooded over the two, nothing but the sound of leaves rustling and raindrops tapping them. The sky illuminated slightly, and a slow rumble fell over the Glade. Newt shuddered, and threw himself back into the hammock, pulling the blanket the girl had brought over his head. A quiet, muffled giggle came from Y/N, and she rolled over, now facing the boy. Y/N pulled the blanket which Newt held over his head back.
"Are you afraid of thunder?" She whispered benevolently, but her voice laced with amusement.
"N-no," Newt stuttered. "I'm just freezing cold." He said sulkily, shivering.
"Uh-huh." The girl scoffed. Newt could feel her breath pass over his hair. "If you're afraid, it's alright you know?" She said reassuringly, pulling some of the blanket back over her body which Newt had stolen.
The boy let out a deep, weary sigh, and shut his eyes tight.
Within seconds, another bolt of lightning streaked across the sky. This time, followed by a loud crackling thunder which took both of them by surprise. Newt's body shot with fear, and grabbed onto the girl beside him tightly. He was broken from his fret when a small muffled voice came from below his face.
"Uuuhm- Newt- I - I uh - can't breath." She mumbled awkwardly, trying to wiggle her way out of his arms.
"S-sorry." The boy shook his head and let go, trying to shake off the terror which flooded his body. A compassionate sigh came from the girl.
"It's just thund—" She spoke softly, but was cut off by an even louder explosion of thunder. Yet again, Newt was clinging to Y/N, and wasn't about to let go.
"Really, Newt?" The girl complained.
"I-I'm sorry." He replied nervously. "I-I can't help it." He whispered to her. The boy refused to let go of the body beside him like she was a shield.
"Does it at least make you feel better?" She questioned him. The girls hand rested against his chest, and she could feel his heart begin to pound acutely. His breathing quickened also, and Y/N's forehead grew warm from his breath.
"Y-yeah..." He mumbled slightly. "You're lucky you're scared cause I would've kicked any of the other boys out of the hammock by now." She giggled a little, and the boy was unsure of how dignified the statement was.
'Great," Newt thought. The fact that the girl was finally lying with him was completely circumstantial. He knew this entire thing would just lead to a more disheartening yearning for the girl. A person doesn't just lie this close to the one they have such an affection for and not want it back. Newt took in a deep breath, knowing that in only a few hours, she would be gone again. Always an arms length away. A sense of hopelessness swept over his body as he felt her breathing slowly next to him and was grief-stricken from the unfortunate adoration he held for her. He promised himself he wouldn't sleep, and do his best to paint the most vivid memories in his mind of the moment he shared with her. The boy felt as if daggers were being sent into his chest, and the heartache truly set in. It was agonizing. All he had to do was say a few words, and maybe things would be different when they woke up.
"How you doing?" The girl shifted around slightly.
"How'd you know I'm awake?" He asked, baffled she was still awake.
"Your heart is racing, so much so I can hear it." Y/N moved a little more, placing her ear over his chest. It was difficult to hear through the hoodie, but it was there. Newt continued to grip the girl tightly, hardly letting her move.
"H-hey. Can I ask you something?" Newt blurted out ambivalently. The girl gave a quite mumble in reply, Newt taking it as a yes. "D-do you.. I mean- W-would you—"
Before the words could escape this lips, a groggy voice called out a few hammocks away. "Newwwwt. Sleep." Alby's voice muttered in a condescending tone.
"It's ok," Y/N let out a light laugh. "We'll talk in the morning."
The thought made Newt feel a little sick. He'd have to face her in the morning, gather the confidence once again to tell her how he felt. But, he was going to do it because he definitely did not want this to be the only night he shared a hammock with her.
