Friday 10:00

Friday 10:00
It's the day after the prom, and god I'm tired. Like for real, I don't think I've ever been this tired before. Matt I meeting me and he promised to walk to class with me (our first class of the day starts at 10:30). I'm so happy I get to see him again! It was so wonderful yesterday! And Em was so happy for me! Oh I can't wait!

'Hey', Matt said from behind her, startling her, but he didn't sound very enthusiastic.

'Hey!', she replied happily. 'You look tired.'

She stood from where she had been sitting and walked up to him. He had big bags under his green eyes and yawned.

'Yeah', he said. 'About last night, it was just one night you know that right. I didn't know who you were, you didn't know who I was. So it was all kinda a big mistake.'

'What?' she asked and for just a second she stopped breathing.

He couldn't be serious, right? They had a great night together, and he was gonna walk with her to class. She finally had her Cinderella story, her fairytale. It hadn't been a mistake, right?

'I'm sorry, Jane', he replied. 'We just don't belong together, so thank you for last night and I'll see you around.'

He turned on his heel and began to walk the other way. For a second she couldn't say a word, so surprised as she was.

'What? No, wait!' she shouted after him. 'Didn't last night mean anything to you?'

He turned and looked her in the eye, all the kindness she had seen in it last night and all the love seemed to have disappeared.

'I said I was sorry', he said. 'What more do you want?'

'An explanation', she hissed in his face.

He looked at her for a second, as if he was thinking of what to say next. She looked at him, wanting an answer now. Because it had been love right, last night? Or had she completely misunderstood?

'You and I will never work', he finally said. 'Never, do you understand? If I had known who you were I would never have danced with you in the first place. Whatever you think there was last night, forget it, because it will never happen.'

And with that he just walked away, leaving her alone in the cafeteria. He couldn't be like that, right? He had to be wrong, he had to be. But somewhere in her mind she had known it all along, people wear masks every day, and maybe, just maybe, that mask came or a little bit last night.
