Chapter 7: Rewinding Town

It was nightfall and the moon tonight was bright and full. Inside the Order, at Komui's office, three Exorcists were called.

"Well... I think it's there... The Innocence, I mean." The Head Chief says lazily as he's covered by piles of books. His eyes were a obvious hint that he hadn't enough rest and sleep. And usually, Komui would be all loud and energetic.

Lenalee was just smiling as Allen had a deadpanned face while sweatdropping. Iris on the otherhand just had an expressionless face.

"But it just might be... so don't get your hopes up... It's not certain... but it's possible. It's possible..." Komui's body gave up and the pile of books he was leaning on toppled over from his weight, making him fall to the floor.

"I get it. It's just possible." Allen pointed out.

"Well, you see, there's this city that keeps rewinding." Komui crawls out from under the mess and stands. "I believe their time is stuck in a single day, forever. Captain Reever." He called out.

"Here." Reever replied lazily as well. "On October the 28th, a liquor dealer recieved an order for ten tons of rose wine to be delivered on the next day, the 29th. But he couldn't get into the city and has since received the same order for ten tons of rose wine for the 29th."

"Th-That's scary." Allen stuttered.

"I love it! When missions are all covered in mystery, it makes me exercise my brain!" Iris says with life and energy.

"It's November already." Lenalee pointed out.

"We'd like to find out but the Finders can't get in either. The rest is just our own theories!"

"First, if the phenomenon is originating from an Innocence Fragment, an exorcist carrying an Innocence may be able to enter the town." Reever states the first one.

"Second, if the town is indeed trapped on October 28th and if you are able to enter, you will most likely unable to exit." Komui says the second theory.

"Let's go!" Iris cheers in high spirits as they start to leave the office.

"Be careful Lenalee!" Komui's voice was still lazy.

Done preparing their things for the mission, they assembled at the waterway. Riding on a boat, Allen paddles it while the girls sits at the back. All of them where holding papers that holds information about the mission.

"The rewinding city eh?" Allen says as he looks at it.

"Have you gotten used to things, Allen?" Lenalee asks with a caring smile.

"You mean the work, or the Order?"

"Both."

"I'm still a little uncomfortable with regards to the work but I've begun to think of the Order as home at least a little, I think. You're all so kind... Ah... With one exception."

It bet it's Kanda. Iris sweatdropped.

"That's nice. I wasn't really able to get comfortable here." Lenalee points out.

"Eh? You didn't come with Komui, then?"

"I was alone at first. I was also relieved when my brother came. I was totally unable to leave his side for awhile."

"Eh?! It's just the opposite now!"

Lenalee laughs nervously at the thought.

Iris knew what Lenalee was talking about. She only knew because of Marshall Cross, he told her the story of Lenalee.

"How about you, Iris? What do you think of the Order?" Allen asks the redhead. He didn't know Iris' onlook of the Black Order.

"At first, I wasn't thinking of it as home since I wanted to be with you and Marshall Cross. It was just a workplace for me and I didn't bother making friends... Until some people just easily broke that barrier." Iris holds her head, not knowing why things turned out like this.

"Right now, I think of the Order as home, but it'll be incomplete if my father isn't there, right?" Iris lifts her chin and smiles. "What I really consider home are the people at the Order, not the organization itself."

It was quiet for a while until Allen realizes something. "This is going to be my first mission with you, Iris! And oh, Lenalee too!"

"Let's get along." Lenalee bows her head.

This is indeed the first mission that we'll be together... But it's not the last.

Arriving at the entrance to Rewinding Town, the Exorcists see Toma who was playing with his deck of cards. Allen calls out his name and waves. Toma was his Finder during the last mission, so it was nice seeing him again.

"I've been waiting for you." The Finder stands.

"Are you coming too, Toma?" Lenalee asks.

"Oh, no."

"You really can't get into the town, then."

"Yes."

Toma lifts his hand to the way into the the town and touches an invisible forcefield that becomes visible through electric shocks. "Because of this situation, I was only able to gather as much information as I've already reported to Headquarters." The town looked deserted from their sanding point.

"I hope it really is a work of an Innocence Fragment!" Iris says energetically.

As the Exorcists try to enter, Toma bids farewell and wishes them luck. Unlike the Finder, no electric shock was visible when they came in contact with the invisible barrier and they managed to enter with ease. The Finder took a step back, not expecting things to go that well.

When the three entered, it was full of people. Unlike from the outside, it was busy with people going on about their lives.

"And we're in..." Allen says with a dumbfounded look. Actually all of them had a dumbfounded expression.

"That was a bit of a let-down." Lenalee said in an honest matter.

"Let's just look for the Innocence." Iris tries to make the group move on and concentrate on the mission.

Walking along the streets to see something out of the ordinary, they decided to split up. Lenalee points at a pub and made it as their meeting place at noon.

Iris was unsure if she'll accompany Allen and make up an excuse or just leave him be. Sighing, she decided to let fate decide for Allen. He must do things on his own.

Looking for anything suspicious, she sees a bunch of kids running, yelling and laughing about some sort of bad luck that spreads. Having no lead, Iris decides to start with that. Making the kids halt, she bends at their level.

"What is this bad luck?" She asks kindly, trying to not scare the kids away.

"Ugh! An adult!" The kid at the very front backs away as if Iris had some decease.

Kids. Ugh. Why can't they be just like me when I was their age? I was mature!

"I'm still a teenager, I'm not yet an adult." Iris says in a neutral tone. "I was intrigued by your story. What is this bad luck?"

"It's Miranda of course! Everyone knows that she always have bad luck. She always gets fired from work because of her clumsiness, she can't do anything right, and she's ugly!" The kid says.

"Where can I find this person named Miranda?" Iris asks.

"Don't go near her, you'll catch her bad luck!"

"I know a person who I really hate and I was wondering if Miranda's luck will take a toll on him. Will you guys help me out by knowing where she would be?"

The kids gladly told her Miranda's location. They'll do anything to help someone get their revenge. Kids.

They told the redhead that Miranda usually passes through a dark and narrow street after looking for a job, in which she fails on finding. The said woman should be there by now. They also described how Miranda looks like.

Thanking the kids, Iris rushes to the said street to start investigating Miranda. A part of the redhead pitied Miranda, she sounds like she's been through a lot of hardships... Especially with those bullies of a kid.

Seeing the said street, a woman in her thirties came out with tears coming out from her eyes. She was laughing in joy. According to the kids' description if Miranda, it definitely fits the woman but she was laughing with tears just now. Is she really the person Iris is looking for?

Tilting her head in confusion, a loud explosion was heard and clouds of smoke came from the narrow street. Arriving at the scene, she sees Allen with his left arm in another form and he slices the level 2 Akuma with it. Killing a level 2 Akuma didn't really much impress Iris since Allen must handle that kind of threat if he wants to survive. What made Iris curious is Allen's left arm, this is the second time it changed form.

Originally, it was just a huge metal claw. It changed form to something like a canon before, and now it transforms into something that impales and slices Akuma.

"Iris?" Allen says as he deactivates his Innocence.

"It seems there's really an Innocence in this town."

"I think so too. It's almost noon, we should meet with Lenalee at the pub."

Allen puts on his hood and brings out his gloves. Seeing this, the redhead walks up to him and gave him a glare as she holds his gloves and hand.

"Don't wear it."

"But I tried my best not to hide it back at the Order!"

"Then continue to practice that outside the Organization as well."

The silverette feels really conscious about his left arm, that's why he hides it. People will think ill of him because of it.

Iris sighs. "Fine, you get to cover your hands BUT you'll have to put your hood down."

Laughing nervously, Allen followed as instructed. It was normal for him to see Iris act this way. Ever since they were little, the redhead would always such things. But because wasn't there for three years to continue her work, Allen's back to square one when it comes to his appearance.

The two of them walked out of the street and into the pub. Waiting for Lenalee, Allen starts to draw Miranda on a piece of paper.

"I'll do the drawing." Iris sweatdrops as she starts to see Allen's poor drawing skills.

"No need, I got this." Allen replies with hype.

"You must be tired from fighting that Akuma so... Let me do it."

"It was just a level 2, it was easy. I assure you, I'm fine."

That's not what I'm concerned about. What I'm worried about is Lenalee seeing your drawing!

When Lenalee enters and sat by the table where Allen and Iris is, the silverette gave his drawing. Iris sweatdrops from it while Lenalee looks at Allen questioningly.

"What's this?" The girl asked.

"We believe she has something to do with this whole Rewinding Town mystery." Iris replied.

"Why'd you lose her?" Lenalee looks at Allen who was just beside Iris.

It was him who came in contact with Miranda and he let her got away. On Iris' side, she was unsure if the woman she saw was really Miranda. It was a mistake on her part that she hesitated to follow the woman.

"She was awfully fast. But I've made this sketch of her appearance!" Allen says like it's all okay.

"Sketch..." Lenalee looks back at his drawing, not wanting to say anything about it.

"Don't worry, I have a detailed description of the woman. And I can draw my own version of her." Iris assures Lenalee.

"If we use it as a lead..." Allen halts when he sees that Lenalee sighs.

"Is something wrong?"

"We shouldn't have split up."

A waiter arrived at their table and served tons of food. All ten plates belonged to Allen. Lenalee just had a hot coffee while Iris had pasta.

The silverette ate like there was no tomorrow as Iris tries to ignore the annoying slurping sound he makes while Lenalee looks at him in complete astonishment. He was eating food good for six people.

It was a bad idea to sit beside Allen. Iris' eyebrows twitched as she tries to eat her pasta quietly. She couldn't move or go to Lenalee's side since Allen is blocking the way.

It was just a matter of minutes and Allen was done eating. Iris just continues to eat her food while they're discussing. She agrees with Allen that they should watch the woman this time.

Lenalee told her side of the story in which Komui's theories was right. She tried to get out of the city but she would just end up back inside again. Even if she activated her Innocence and used it, it's still the same. They're really stuck in the city, unless they destroy the spell that the Innocence created.

"Innocence?" A woman with a cloth covering her hair slowly rises from the sit behind Lenalee, meaning only Allen and Iris can see her. She was wearing a black dress and her hair was messily tied to a bun.

Allen yells as he points at the woman. "That's her!" He leans forward to the point he was so close on touching the woman.

From extreme shock, the woman shrieks in horror and goes out of the pub through a window. Allen barely stopped her by grabbing the hem of her dress. It's such a good thing it wasn't lifted so high up that her underwear wouldn't be seen. Iris and Lenalee was just watching silently, with the twintailed girl sighing tiredly.

"Exorcists?" The woman says, catching her breath.

"Yes." Allen's arm that he uses to grab the dress was twitching.

"Why did you run from us?" Lenalee asks.

"I'm sorry, I just got startled." The woman replies apologetically.

"It's your fault, Allen Stalker." Iris smacks the silverette's head.

"Ow!"

After things have calmed down, the woman sits with the three Exorcists. Surprisingly, the three of them can fit in one seat. The scrawny looking woman has the sit across from theirs all to herself. The Exorcists are aware that she's quite sensitive and can get easily scared and panicky.

Behind the bar was a man who was ordering ten tons of rose wine for tomorrow, October 29. But it's already November and 31 days has passed already. The whole town's been repeating itself for a month.

So this is the bar eh? From my understanding and intuition, this woman, Miranda, really has something to do with this whole phenomenon.

"M-My name is Miranda Lotto. I'm so happy to meet someone else who can see that this town isn'r right!" The woman introduced herself, relieved that she's all alone anymore.

"No matter who I told it to, they just make fun of me. I was ready to kill myself! I did manage to dodge a snake though." Miranda laughed with black aura surrounding her.

All Exorcists had the same thought as they all looked at Miranda in disbelief. There is definitely something wrong with her, they thought.

"Miss Miranda, do you remember what's happened since the town has started rewinding?" Lenalee asks.

"Yes. Although everyone else seems to have forgotten."

Miranda's eyes becomes teary. "Please help me out! At this rate, I'm going to go mad!"

She holds Allen's hand as she cries with her eyes bulged out, making Allen shriek in a high-pitched voice but it was soft. "You just saved me from that monster, didn't you? Help me out from this situation too!"

Iris laughs at the sight, holding her stomach. Hearing Allen shriek like that is golden, and she plans on rubbing it on his face all the time.

"Calm down, Miss Miranda. We'll help you find the source."

"Source?"

"Something must've happened on the first and original October 28. Do you have any idea?" Lenalee felt awkward on Miranda's actions, smiling nervously.

"Or anything odd during that day?" Iris adds.

Miranda had no idea, crying it out. Allen just smiles awkwardly like Lenalee while Iris had a grin plastered on her face.

All of a sudden, Allen's left eye goes black and red. Iris sees this, since she was just beside him and Lenalee is on the far left. With the silverette sitting on the edge that leads to the open area, he stands up easily.

Akumas were inside the pub, and there are four of them. As Allen activates his Innocence, he was stating that Miranda had come in contact with the Innocence because she's unaffected by the town's repetition.

The Akumas were all level 2 and the two female Exorcists also stood up to fight. All activated their Innocence was ready to fight.

In Iris' mind, she was debating if she'll end this quickly or not. If she'll let things get dragged out too much, unnecessary things will happen. If she'll end it quickly, where and when will Allen take the spotlight?

Rumbling words similar to 'whatever' and 'I don't know anymore' in french, the redhead decided to kill a maximum of two Akumas. But, she will fight them without using her full strength and the power of her Innocence.

When an Akuma blasts at their direction, Allen uses his huge metal claws as a shield to deflect the beam. Unlike Allen, Lenalee and and Iris can't avoid being turned to ashes if they're hit by the Akuma because the decease will spread.

"Lenalee, take Miranda and leave. Your Dark Boots should be able to get you to her house before they can." Allen says, still having a polite tone.

"Don't worry about Allen, I'll stay with him." Iris assured.

"Okay, got it." With that, Lenalee jumps and manages to escape the pub.

Now, it's just the two Exorcists and three level 2 Akumas, since Lenalee already killed one of them.

"Sound Pulse!" One Akuma emits sound waves and it caused the two Exorcists to hold their head in pain.

"I feel like my head's going to explode!" Allen says in agony.

Once it stopped, Iris was the first to recover and she warns Allen from an incoming attack by one of the Akumas. With the heads up, the Silverette wasn't hit.

Deciding to let Allen fight them all, Iris avoids to do the last hit. She despised herself for being so fake. Pretending to be weak and let Allen do the rest was disgusting and despicable. But if she just killed them all then there, what of Allen? How will he become stronger if there are no dangers that will push him to his limit?

Being pinned to a corner, the Akumas started to argue with each other and who'll do the kill. The Exorcists just sweatdropped. Seeing this a chance, Allen attacked them with his canon-like arm.

Irritated, the three Akumas all charged at once. This time, Iris had made the decision to kill one of them. She was aiming for the Akuma that can emit sound waves.

But all of a sudden, the Akuma halted in their charge because someone was talking and it belonged to a girl. Iris had chills go up her spine.

Who is it? Why do I feel so intimidated and scared?

After the voice was done talking, the Akumas flew out of the pub, creating a massive hole in the roof. The two were left, wondering what just happened.

Chase? Or not chase? But if I chased them, that would mean I'll really have to kill them all. I don't want that. Allen doesn't have his kill yet.

In the middle of her internal debate, Lenalee comes back to the pub. "Where are the Akuma?"

"I heard a voice and they just went off." Allen smiles nervously.

So Allen heard it as well? What is going on here?

Iris had a bad a feeling about this whole mission. She could tell that it wasn't any other ordinary task. Something is different, and he doesn't know what is.
