Chapter 5: To Make It Possible
Waiting for Allen to come out of his room, Iris was sitting on the railings, playing with Timcanpy. She was so fascinated on how the golem became so little when the last time she saw him, it was bigger than Cross' head. Having a little version of Timcanpy wasn't odd, it just made him cuter.
Unfortunately for her, Allen sees her act like a child that has just received a new toy. He opened his door softly and Iris was busy with Timcanpy, meaning she really won't notice the silverette.
To the boy, he had already spotted the difference between the Iris then and now. It was not physically, but emotionally.
He noticed that that the redhead always seem so cheerful, and unlike before she's so laid-back in everything she does. When they were still together, Iris was always serious in everything she does, having a stern face. And to see Iris act like this, it was definitely something to take note of.
The golden golem sees Allen and flies to him, landing on his head. The boy was starting to get ready for a threat from Iris, but was surprised to see that she just smiles and approaches him. No threats came.
"How was your first night at the Order? Slept well?" The redhead asks.
"It was a great! I slept so soundly, I even want to still sleep but I'm excited to see the whole Order." Allen replied, stretching his arms as Timcanpy flew away and was nowhere to be seen.
"I heard you and papa were at India three months ago. Where is papa now?"
"The thing is... Marshall Cross told me to go to the Order alone to become an Exorcist, then hits me with a hammer that made me go unconscious. When I woke up, he left me with Timcanpy."
"That definitely sounds like something that papa would do. How is he? Is he still a bastard?"
"He's doing well, and he won't stop raising his debts." Allen cries, not wanting to call him a bastard because he feels that Marshall Cross will know it somehow one way or another.
"Hahaha! It seems he's really doing well. How about you? Any improvement?"
Allen told his story about having a friend in India who had a sister. The sister died and was turned into an Akuma, killing her little brother and took his form. The silverette had no choice but to kill the Akuma, to release the sister. It was tragic, since Allen rarely gets to have friends, especially with his left arm.
Iris remembered something and planned to use it to lighten up the mood.
"I almost forgot. Hey Allen, do you have the complete list of women papa flirted with?" Red horns and a red tail grew from Iris' body as she laughs with a purple aura. With her hair and eye color, she really looked the devil.
"A-Ah, wait." Allen searches for pockets and found nothing. He started to panic and looked for the list in his luggage, still not finding it anywhere.
"Aaaaaallen..." Iris says in a horrific voice.
"Wait! I'm sure it's in here somewhere! Aaah! Where did I put them?"
Timcanpy flies into the room, landing on Allen's bed. It just watched how Allen panics while Iris was looking forward to mincing his left arm. Iris doesn't really plan to mince his arm, it was just to fill Allen's head with something else to forget the sadness.
"It seems you'll have to see Komui again to repair your left arm." Iris smirks, having a glint in her eye.
"Hold on! I'm definitely sure I placed it around here somewhere!" Allen pleads, running out of hope.
Timcanpy tilts its head sideways and goes back to its original position. He then opens his mouth and projected profiles of women.
The two Exorcists sees it. It was complete, filled with names, addresses, age, hobbies, acquaintances, even drawn images of the women. Of course it was drawn by Allen, meaning it was somewhat outrageous looking.
"Tim! Don't tell me you ate the papers?" Allen bends toward the golden golem, not knowing how Timcanpy can project images. Iris started to panic a little because Allen doesn't know Tim has such a feature.
"At least Tim saved the profiles. Although you didn't need to add drawings." Iris sweatdropped.
"Why?" Allen asks, not having any clue.
Just then, the redhead realizes something and yells in horror. Allen and Timcanpy panics, not knowing what to do.
"I-Iris? Are you okay-"
"Noooo! I just made Allen a stalker! What have I done?!"
"I'm not a stalker!" Allen became embarrassed.
"I'm such an idiot! Such an idiot! Now you'll be called Allen Stalker!"
"No one will call me that!"

Seeing Allen put on his white gloves, Iris immediately intervenes. She grips Allen's hand and removed the gloves. The silverette knew why she was doing this and continued to let her do so.
"Allen, remember to love yourself. Even if it looks horrific or ugly, this arm of yours has brought you here. This arm is the reason why met Mana. So don't try to hide it." The redhead says calmly, almost sounding like a mother.
She throws the gloves onto the table. "I know it's hard going around with your scar, white hair, and your left arm... But try not to think about other people's opinion about you."
Allen smiles, feeling nostalgia as it warms his heart. "You really haven't changed, Iris."
Since things have calmed down, Allen and Iris goes to the cafeteria with full of energy thanks to the redhead's doing. Stopping in front of Jeryy, the chef notices that there's a new guy in the Order.
"Ooh, a new boy~? And what a cute one you are!" Jeryy had sparkles around him, looking at Allen while holding out chopsticks. Jerry's close to everyone, and people would go to him for comfort.
"Nice to meet you! My name is Allen Walker!" The silverette bows a perfect ninety-degrees, making Iris want to kick his butt so he'll fall.
"How nice and formal! What'll it be? I'll make you anything you like!" Jeryy says.
Hahaha, I hope Jeryy won't regret that because he'll be cooking nonstop.
"Anything? Hm... Well then! I'll have a Au Gratin potatoes, french fries, fried curry, mabodofu, beef stew, meat pies, carpaccio, nashigoren, chicken, tuna salad, some scones, a kuppa, a tomyank, and rice. Then for dessert I'll have a mango pudding and some roasted dumplings, let's say twenty sticks of roasted dumplings!"
Iris shakes her head sideways with her lips curved upwards as she puts a hand to her head. Allen is still a big eater. She's so jealous that Allen can eat a ton without getting fat, it's so unfair.
"Can you really eat all that?" Jeryy sweatdrops.
A voice boomed in the cafeteria, making it echo slightly because the room is enclosed. "Just say that to my face again!"
Looking at the source, it belonged to a Finder who confronted Kanda. Iris simply sighs, knowing where this is going.
"Hey, stop it Buzz." One of the finders tries to stop the buffed Finder.
"Shut up. Don't lurk around talking about your dead friends while I'm eating. You'll ruin my appetite." Kanda was arrogant as ever, it becomes worse every year.
"Is that how you treat your allies?! We finders work beneath you exorcists supporting you at the risk to our very lives! And you say that ruins your appetite?!"
Buzz throws a fist towards Kanda but the Exorcist evades it and strangles the Finder with one hand. "You support us?" The swordsman had a smirk on his face that will really make everyone hate him.
"No, you can do nothing but support us! You were unfit to be Exorcists. You're just losers whom the Innocence refused to choose! There are plenty of replacements available for you finders. If you don't want to die, then get out!"
Offending every Finder in the room, they were ready to attack him, but someone grabs Kanda's hand. It was a red hand.
"Stop," Allen says calmly. "I hate to barge into an argument in which I have nothing to say, but I think your tone is simply unnecessary."
Iris walks over them and halts behind Allen. She may be looking stern right now, but internally, she was facepalming.
I think I should've told Allen about Kanda. Iris' eyebrows twitched.
"Let me go, beansprout." Kanda glares at Allen, still holding Buzz by the neck.
"Beansprout? My name is Allen."
"No, it's Allen Stalker." Iris whispered as she waves her hand sideways, gesturing that she dismisses Allen's last sentence. She was unsure if Kanda or Buzz heard her.
"I'm not." Allen whispers back with veins popped in his head.
"I'll remember that if you make it a month without biting the dust. Many die here like maggots under a blowtorch, like them." Kanda looks at Buzz and releases his neck.
The Finder falls to the ground, pale. Some of his fellow Finders tried to hell him.
"That tone is unnecessary." Allen says, face-to-face with Kanda.
"Don't touch me, cursed one." As if on cue, Allen releases Kanda's wrist.
After that, the swordsman looks at Iris who was standing behind them, exactly in the middle. "What are you doing here?" He asked, still stern.
"I was about to order food but there was this ruckus so... yeah, making sure no one gets hurt." Iris replied nonchalantly, like talking to Kanda was normal.
Iris disagrees with Kanda's way of thinking sometimes, especially that he's arrogant and somewhat selfish. But Kanda won't be so annoying if you just let him alone or if you don't do anything that will annoy him. The redhead had all his dislikings written down so she won't piss off the swordsman.
Although there were times that Iris would intentionally annoy Kanda because she has nothing to do. The redhead is crazy. Case closed.
The older Exorcist looks back at Allen with narrowed eyes. "You'll die young, I hate your type."
"Well, I return your sentiment." Allen countered.
"Okay," Iris claps her hand once, catching everyone's attention. "I had a dream last night."
She was referring to her second dream, the one she had during her second sleep. Because the Finders know Iris, some backed away and covered their ears while the rest stayed in their positions, wanting to hear her. Iris always had crazy, ridiculous, and outrageous dreams that will make everyone wish it won't come true. But the first dream she had last night was different, it kept on repeating and it meant nothing. Nothing can be explained from that dream, Iris says to herself.
She's just only ignores and rejects the idea.
Even after Kanda heard Iris, he stayed and had a glaring contest with Allen. Sparks were flying everywhere as all the Finder back away for sure. The sparks became a flame, showing how heated it was. Iris looks at them with an expressionless face, letting them glare at each other.
"Guys, looks can't kill. If it can, you two would have died just a moment ago." Iris pointed out.
"There they are, Captain Reever." Looking at the entrance to the cafeteria, Lenalee and Reever can be seen. The girl was holding her usual clipboard while Reever was holding a stack of thick books.
"There they are. Kanda! Allen!" Reever yelled as they were glaring at each other.
Catching the two Exorcist's attention, they turned to Reever, who was now bending his knees behind Lenalee.
"Go to the commander's room. You've got a mission." He yelled.
The two guys followed Reever and Lenalee while Iris stays behind. The redhead sighs, not knowing what to do.
Allen already receives his first mission from the get go and of course Iris is not a part of the mission. She can just leave the building without anyone knowing and follow Allen, but it would surely cause her trouble when she comes back.
That's where she decided to talk with Komui after Allen leaves. Iris will have to hope that Allen will be okay on his first mission, and she's giving Allen a chance to really do things himself without anyone pulling the strings around him.
After Allen and Kanda received their mission, Iris meets up with them in the waterway. Kanda and the Finder were already on the boat while Allen was with Komui and Reever.
The redhead sees that Allen wore his uniform as an Exorcist of the Black Order and smiles to herself. It suits him.
"Do I have to wear this?" Allen asks as he looks at his coat.
"It's something like the badge of an Exorcist. It's made for battle, so it's pretty tough." Komui pointed out.
"Or you can just go into the field and receive thrice the damage." Iris laughed.
From Allen's sleeve, Timcanpy flew out of it and started to fly freely. "Timcanpy! Where have you been?" Allen asks the golem. Of course it can't answer.
Allen gets into the boat with the rest of his team, ready to leave. Iris stays with Komui and Reever to see them off.
"I had him show me your past." Komui says all of a sudden, catching Iris and Allen's attention.
"Timcanpy is able to record images into himself. See you!" Komui smiles with a thumbs up. That was able to answer Allen's question to how Timcanpy can project the profiles of the women Cross flirted with. Iris had a calm expression but she was starting to ask a lot of questions because it's possible that the Chief let Timcanpy show Iris' past as well.
"If I hear that you lost to some Akuma, I'm gonna stab your left arm!" Iris jokingly threatened Allen.
The team left to Martel, a deserted place in Italy. Finally, Iris was alone with Reever and Komui.
"So, what do you want, Iris?" Komui asks kindly but with a hint of being serious. Reever stands there, watching and listening their conversation.
The redhead turns to Komui with a determined look. "It's about him." She meant her father.
Understanding the situation, the two had a talk in Komui's office. If Iris trusted anyone in the Order if it concerned her father, it would be Komui. He knows Marshall Cross and the two are good acquaintances with each other.
Iris tells the situation, that she needs to keep watch on Allen. Of course she knew that it wasn't going to be Komui who gets to decide all of it, it's going to be the higher ups. She had a gut feeling that she's going to encounter Leverrier.
Allen and Kanda's mission would take four to five days, and Iris needs a decision within that time span. And so Komui and Iris left the Order immediately to head to Vatican, where they will receive and wait for an answer.
Just like what Iris felt, they encountered the frightening inspector. He was the one assigned to handle the request. It wasn't going to be easy, and Iris needs to make sure that she won't do anything to dismay Leverrier, so she'll be allowed to have joined missions with Allen. This is not the second time they met, they have crossed paths a lot of times.
Just like before, the two sat across from each other. Behind the inspector were CROWS, and behind Iris was Komui.
"It's quite unthinkable to imagine that you, Iris, is right in front of me asking a request." Leverrier had a smirk on his face. Iris is now in his territory, and she's going to please the inspector to have his permission.
"Well, I have no choice." The redhead's voice didn't shake or weaken. Memories from a year ago started to flash and she shrugged them off.
"No choice indeed." The man was smiling at Iris' state, and he noticed that she was remembering the incident.
"Thinking of the old times, Fluer de Lis Iris Marian?" He smirked. "Let me have you know, you are still in my debt."
"You don't have to remind me every single time we meet."
"And here you are, hoping that I would agree on whatever it is you request."
The redhead tries ignores the fact that she'll be owing Leverrier twice now. It felt frustrating, especially that Leverrier is a despicable man.
It looks like Leverrier will play around, so in order to get the conversation going, Iris gets to the point. "Will you permit me to have joined missions with Allen Walker from now on?"
"I'm still undecided."
Tch, I really have to please him huh?
"Okay, I get your game. Ask me questions and I'll try to answer them." The redheaded curses internally when she sees how Leverrier gets things to go his way.
"From the very moment you were born, was Cross Marian by your side?"
"No."
"By the age you were able to understand words, was Cross Marian introduced to you as your father?"
"No."
"At what age did you know Cross Marian was your father?"
"Six."
"Ah, six. At least you spent half of your childhood with Cross, right?" Leverrier was mocking Iris.
"But he is my father."
"How sure are you?"
"A hundred-and-one percent."
"Did Cross Marian admit that he is your father?"
"Countless times."
"What if he was lying?"
"If he was lying... I might as well drown my sorrows with alcohol like he does. Like father, like daughter." Iris meant what she said. For a long time now, she has decided if ever she turns out not be Cross Marian's daughter, she'll just drown all her disappointment and sadness with alcohol even if it means destroying her insides. As long as she'll feel ready to move on, she'll drink nonstop.
"What a determined girl."
"Determined? I call that 'planning ahead'."
"Why do you want to watch Allen so much that you even came all the way from the Order Headquarters and confront me?"
"It's because I want to protect Allen."
"Oh? I don't sense any determination from you when you said it."
Iris wasn't lying when she said she wanted to protect Allen. It's just that she doesn't want to protect him in this kind of way, but she has to.
"It's because I miss Allen." The redhead tried again.
"Finally being truthful now are we?"
"Don't get any wrong ideas, he's my friend."
With a glint in his eye, the inspector grins. Iris immediately knew what it meant.
"What if I did permit you to have joint missions with Allen Walker? Wouldn't it just raise the risk of another repetition of the incident that happened a year ago?"
"Don't play dumb with me Leverrier. I know that you so much want to see it happen again."
The inspector's grin widened. He just admitted it.
Leverrier permitted Iris to have joined missions with Allen but it came with conditions. Iris must follow orders coming from the Central Agency whenever they say so. She also agreed not to become like her father, which are not coming back to the Order and not reporting missions. Iris must also give up on attempting to leave the Order or to stop being an Exorcist.
In the end, Iris got she wanted but there had to be sacrifices on her part. With the approval of the inspector, Iris and Komui had no reason to stay any longer and headed back home to the Order.
On the way back, Komui had his lips formed in a frown. He wasn't able to do anything for her to at least lessen the conditions.
"I'm so sorry Iris, I wasn't able to do something about the conditions. You gave up almost all of your freedom." Komui apologizes.
"Head Chief, no need to be sorry. Just make sure to help me during times where I need it the most. And besides, I'll stop the contract once Marshall Cross makes his appearance or when I'll become General."
Iris says nonchalantly. She was ready for this from the start and the redhead thinks it's worth it, for Allen, Cross, and herself. And if Marshall Cross tells Iris to watch over Allen, it means he's perfectly aware that his daughter will have to talk with the Central Agency. Even after knowing this, he still lets Iris do so, meaning he's sure that everything will be all right.
The redhead sighs tiredly.
"Komui, I'll rest for a bit. Wake me up when something happens."
