Chapter 2: The Black Order
The Order asks Iris to enter via the normal way, to be examined by the Gatekeeper. And so, before entering the huge two doors, she stood in front of the Gatekeeper.
Her face was cold and stern, along with her demeanor. The Order is a dark place, and Iris is away from the people she's close to. She's not going to like it here, she thought.
She had to introduce herself and it was going to be a pain with her long name. "I'm Fleur de Lis Iris Marian, I became an Exorcist of the Order six years ago and I'm back to work as one." Having the 'Marian' name made her uncomfortable, because she feels that the name brings pressure and high expectations.
"Who's that?" A man said from the black flying golem.
"Hah?" Iris deadpanned, expecting them to know who she is. It was also reasonable since she hasn't been in the Order for six long years. She is now fourteen.
The Head Chief changed, so I think no one really knows me.
"That's Marshall Cross' daughter, you idiot! There's even a letter from him here, see?!" Another man spoke.
"Oh, ahahaha! I'm sorry for that! Then, Iris, please stand in front of the Gatekeeper." The original man instructed.
I'm already standing in front of it.
The Gatekeeper examines her. As light pass through her body, she was a hundred percent sure that she's not an Akuma.
"All clear!" The Gatekeeper says. The girl didn't see the need to be examined, she's human and besides, Cross already brought her here once.
With that, the redhead enters the black tower. Cross said to see and meet and Head Chief first, and so the girl walks to his office from memory. She's only been there once and it was six years ago but to her it was like it happened yesterday.
On the way, she meets a girl her age with blue-green hair tied into twintails and she had beautiful purple eyes. Iris knew who it was without a doubt. It was Lenalee. Even if Iris met her once and they were on good terms, her cold gaze didn't falter.
"I'm Lenalee Lee, it's nice to meet you. I was about to get you from the entrance but I see you're already halfway to the Head Chief's office. If you don't mind, let me accompany you." Lenalee smiles.
She doesn't know who I am. It brought slight disappoint to Iris. Though it would be a normal reaction because Lenalee only met her once and it was brief, not to mention it was six years ago.
Unlike before, the smile was truly genuine. There was no sadness. It made Iris grin to herself. At least there some improvement on Lenalee's part, the redhead thought.
Having Lenalee as company, they both head to Komui's office. No one spoke a word for the entire time. Entering the room, the floor was covered with papers. It was basically a mess.
By the desk is a tall man in a white uniform wearing a white beret. He had dark blue hair and he wears glasses.
"Welcome to the European branch of the Black Order, Iris!" Komui greeted with a warm smile.
So this is Lenalee's brother. To think that he is in control of all seven branches of the Order.
"Hello." Iris greeted with a bow, trying to be sincere.
"Please follow me!" Komui says in a carefree tone as he started to walk going to a high-tech room.
"Since Marshall Cross took you and left the Order right after fixing your raw Innocence, we don't really know much about you and your Innocence."
The Branch Chief enters a room and Iris follows, with Lenalee beside her. It looked like an operating room for patients that needed surgery.
"I can see that the Innocence Fragment is within that sword of yours." Komui leans forward to take a closer look at it.
The blade and hilt are as black as it could be. It's grip is covered with white cloth to help the wielder for a more easier grasp. When activated, the forte and the hilt will have a glowing blue symbol.
Saying that her Innocence needed examination, Iris didn't hesitate and gave her sword to Komui. After putting it on a table, he brings out a huge menacing drill.
"What are you going to do with that?" Iris was starting to question her decision.
"To examine your Innocence!" Komui answered with a glint in his eye.
"That's not how you examine an Innocence!" Iris immediately takes back her sword and stayed at a long distance away from Komui, giving a glare.
"It was just a joke." The Branch Chief dismissed it easily as a joke, having that carefree attitude.
This guy...
After clearing the issue, Komui brings Iris to Hevlaska's Chamber. Using an elevator that has a shape of an upside down pyramid, they go further down the building.
Iris knew Hevlaska's her role and who she is, all thanks to Cross. Her father told her everything that she needed to know as an amateur Exorcist.
Halting the elevator, Iris could see people sitting on throne-like sits with their whole body covered in a black cloak. Their heads are hooded.
"They are our bosses, the Grand Marshals." Komui pointed out.
Iris refrains from making any eye contact with them. I don't want to have any interaction with them.
All of a sudden, a being picked up Iris from the elevator. It looked semi-transparent, having a color of light blue. Turning its hands, Iris was facing the being.
The redhead was calm and collected. Unlike other first timers, she didn't panic or go on a rampage. She had her muscles relax as Hevlaska would start to examine her and her innocence.
Tentacles touched Iris' arm and her black sword. There was definitely pain, but it was bearable. The feeling of being wrapped around Hevlaska felt weird and very uncomfortable. She could tell that Hevlaska was truly examining her.
"You are quite confident of yourself." Hevlaska commented, surprising Iris.
As their foreheads touch, the spirit-like Exorcist calculates Iris' synchronization rate with her Innocence.
"Five percent... Twenty percent... Fifty-five percent... Ninety-one percent." Hevlaska backs away from Iris.
"Your highest synchronization rate with your weapon is ninety-one percent. Remember, the lower the synchronization rate, the more chaotic its activation and the more dangerous it is for its bearer."
The spirit-like Exorcist puts Iris back into the elevator gently and the redhead was glad it's over. Since Hevlaska acts as the Order's prophet, she has foreseen something in the future of Iris.
"Fleur de Lis Iris Marian, you are loved by both good and evil. You will either become humanity's last resort, or humanity's destruction. It will depend on your choices." Hevlaska prophesied.
Komui suddenly claps with a carefree and laid back smile on his face. "That was quite a prophecy, but in any case... I congratulate you for not panicking when encountering Hevlaska! Her predictions are often correct, meaning... you get to know a small gist of the future."
Loved by both good and evil? Humanity's-
"As an exorcist, you must fight to protect and save the world from the Millennium Earl. Fight! That is your purpose! Your duty!" A Grand Marshall spoke.
After finishing his talk, they vanished into the darkness along with their thrones.
Tch. My purpose? I'll gladly fight those Akuma and stop the Earl as long you won't restrict me from doing anything I like or forcing me to do something I don't want.
"So, welcome to the Order, Iris." Komui gave another smile as he reaches out his hand for a handshake.
Iris reached out hers and they shook hands.
"May God be with you, Iris." Hevlaska says.

It has been two weeks since Iris' stay at the Order. She met people from the Science division, Jeryy the cook, and some finders. People here wouldn't stop talking about her being Marshall Cross' daughter and it made Iris quite irritable.
After receiving her escargot from Jeryy, she finds a table and sat there to eat. Swallowing the first snail, she could see from the corner of her eye that at the table beside hers is Kanda eating his soba.
The redhead deadpanned at his food of choice. He's been eating that for two weeks now.
Turning her head away from Kanda, someone sits beside her. Looking at the person's face, she sees that it was a male. He had red hair that was let down. His left eye is green while the other is covered by a black eyepatch.
"I'm Lavi, nice to meet you." The male smiles.
"You're one of the new Exorcists from yesterday. I'm Iris." The girl tried to stay neutral, neither mean nor friendly.
That smile? Don't make me laugh, he's faking it. No matter how friendly he looks, he is still a Bookman.
Analyzing him, she came upon a result that made her grin. He gave up on mankind. It was obvious now, his smile clearly says so.
"Ho? You despise mankind? Well, I despise the world. Do you think the both of us will get along splendidly?" Iris had no intention of hiding her knowledge and quick-mindedness.
If Bookman Jr. decides to keep an eye me, I won't mind. He won't find anything interesting in me. I'm just an Exorcist with a complex past.
Lavi was taken aback from her words. She saw right through him and he didn't like it. He's talking with someone intelligent as well. It was going to be a clash between brains and mind games.
"I think we'll get along." Lavi replied, bringing back his smile. To Lavi, Iris is someone interesting to be around with, and she's definitely going to be a challenge. Lavi would have to be careful around her. He thought everyone in the Order were all fools.
The two ate in silence for the whole time and Iris finished her lunch first, leaving Lavi in the dining room. She had no intention opening herself to others within the Order.
This place is just a workplace for Exorcists.

Lavi, Bookman, and Iris had yet to receive their first mission. Lenalee is busy as Komui's assistant while Kanda was on a mission.
Having nothing to do, the two brains had a battle in the dinning hall. Free Finders who had nothing to do and some scientist from the Science Division were spectating their so-called psychic powers.
"Your age would be sixteen!" Iris says with confidence.
"You're correct, and I know that you're fourteen years old! Ha! Take that!" Lavi was also brimming with confidence.
Iris started to analyze Lavi more. The male does the same.
"Your least favorite food is Wasabi!"
"How did you know that?!"
"When you annoyed Kanda the other day, he threw his tray at you. A spoonful of wasabi almost landed on your mouth and you sighed in relief, and you fell to the ground from weak legs!"
"I know that you're favorite food is pasta, to be specific, pesto chicken!"
"One of your hobbies is sleeping."
"One of your hobbies is writing!"
"Now how in hell did you know that?!"
"I would occasionally see you in quiet and isolated places with papers and a pen!"
Both Iris and Lavi gave up on their battle of the brains, exhausted from thinking and yelling, especially yelling. The crowd was astonished by their observation skills and analyzation in order to know one's self. The Science Department felt at a loss that neither of the two can join them to at least make their work easier.
"I underestimated you..." Lavi says, gasping for air.
"Yeah, me too. Bookmen are not to be taken lightly of. " Iris admits.
"I told you, we can get along well." Lavi grins. Being with Iris was definitely something else.
"From now on, I'll be calling you Red Riding Hood! Or maybe Red for short." Lavi decides.
"Ha?" Iris gave him a questionable look. "Red Riding Hood?"
"Sa~ Because of your hair color!"
"But your hair is red too!"
"I'm the one who gives the nicknames. Don't question me."
"Haaar! Yhe pirate decides the nicknames, haaar! I scourged the savage seas for my booty!" Iris teases Lavi with a mocking grin, imitating a pirate.
The two had another brain battle but it was now composed of trivias and riddles. Iris never thought that she would show so much emotion here in the Order.

"Lady-like manners? Well... During occasions and formal activities, I would behave like a lady." Iris pointed out, answering Lenalee's question as she helps her with putting back books on the shelves.
Although I only act like one to impress my father and to make him avoid flirting with other women. Iris had a purple aura round her as she laughs to herself. Lenalee sweatdrops.
"And Marshal Cross prefers that I should not behave in such a way because I am an Exorcist and manners doesn't have anything to do with it." She added. "If anything, behaving in such a manner would be a hassle since you need to think of the proper etiquettes."
Iris doesn't want to call Cross "papa" in front of other people when he himself is not there. So, she calls her father "Marshall Cross" or just "Cross" ever since she joined the Order officially.
"Is it hard being the Marshall's daughter? I mean, the expectations you receive."
"Cross' training is hard and he's so strict about it, that's one of the hard parts. Having a womanizer as a father is also hard, which is very irritating and frustrating. Plus, his debts just keep on stacking and stacking. If he ever had any expectations from me, it would be my fighting skills and how I would conduct myself as an Exorcist."
"Is he overprotective?"
"Yes." Iris replied with a vein popped on her head. "He made sure no guy would talk to me."
Although there is Allen, but it can't be helped since he is father's student and we three travelled together.
"I know how that feels." Lenalee remembers her brother Komui. She sighs tiredly. But Komui having a sister complex is what makes him Komui.
"Though it has it's advantages. I would interact with boys whenever Cross has plans to flirt with women! I always manage to make sure he'll see women less and less." Iris was proud of herself and how intelligent she was, laughing in victory.
Finishing putting the books back in their places, they decided to walk around the Order to pass the time. It was then where Iris realized how much she opened up to a person, especially that it concerned her and Cross. It was odd for her.
Turning to a corner, they entered the hall for Exorcist's rooms. On their right was Kanda who just came out of his room. Like the usual, he looked menacing and stern.
"Oh, Kanda you're back. How was the mission?" Lenalee asks with a smile and a tone filled with concern.
"None of your business." Kanda responded, brushing it off. It's the same as always, Kanda being grouchy and aloof.
He notices that Iris was with her. It was a perfect timing.
"Hey you, let's spar. Your Innocence is a sword, right?" Kanda said to Iris, wanting to know how strong she is. Also, he has nothing to do ever since he came back from his mission.
"It is a sword, yup. And I decline to fight you." Iris plainly rejected the proposal.
"What?" Kanda felt irritated at her reply. He became even more angrier when he asks something from someone and they don't comply. He rarely asks someone for something and this is what he gets in return, to be declined.
"What are you, a coward?" Veins were visible on his face.
"No. I just don't feel like sparring with someone. Maybe at a later date, or at a later later date... Or maybe even at a later later later date." Iris wasn't joking or mocking Kanda when she said this. Her face and tone depicted seriousness but Kanda sees it as a joke.
She can't afford to show her strength here inside the Order where it could be reported to the Centra Agency. If ever they see her as a strong and powerful Exorcist, Iris would be treated as a tool even more. She would have no will or freedom at all.
Kanda unsheathes his sword slightly, angered from Iris. He wanted to attack her then and there, but he's inside the Order and Iris is the daughter of a certain someone. Kanda wasn't that dumb to wish for a death sentence from Marshall Cross.
He lets go of his sword and turns his back at them with a frustrated look. "Tch. You shouldn't have joined the Order six years ago." Kanda walks away, trying to restrain himself from attacking Iris.
Ho? He remembered me from six years ago?
When Kanda said it, Lenalee thought of something and just had a sudden realization.
"I heard you joined the order years ago and became Marshall Cross' disciple, being away for six years. Did we meet at that time?" Lenalee asked Iris.
"You really forgot huh? You were with Kanda during the time, and we only talked for few minutes because Cross came to get me."
"I don't remember, I'm sorry!" Lenalee bows, apologizing. She tried hard to remember meeting Iris with Kana but nothing enters her head.
"Don't apologize, it happened a long time ago. It's only natural that you won't remember since you were eight at the time while Kanda was ten." Iris pointed out.
After saying that, she just realized that she and Lenalee have the same age. No wonder they get along well. Though Lenelee is older by more or less eight months. She was born February twenty while Iris was born November seven.
As the two girls continued walking, exchanging more stories, a black golem flew towards their direction. It catches their attention and it played an audio. "Fleur de Lis Iris Marian, kindly follow the guards at your front. Thank you." The voice belonged to Komui and he sounded serious, alarming the concerned girl.
The redhead looked to her front and sees two guards. She knew what's going to happen.
Iris notices that Lenalee looked worried, not liking the announcement at all. Even though they only knew each other for almost a month, Lenalee sees Iris as someone close to her. She's already part of Lenalee's family.
"Don't worry, I bet it's just some question and answers thing. Oh, can you do me a favor and try to convince Kanda that I wasn't mocking him? Tell him that I would definitely spar with him, just not now. Lenalee, I'll somehow make it up to you okay? See you later." Iris smiles, hoping it would lessen Lenalee's worry.
She tried to keep the twintailed girl busy so she won't be worrying about her, thus asking Lenalee to convince Kanda. Iris knows very well how motherly Lenalee is.
The redhead joins the guards and follows them to a dark hall. When they came upon a double-door, the guards halted and gestured Iris to enter. Doing as told, she enters the room.
In it is Malcolm C. Leverrier, a high-ranking inspector of the Central Agency. Standing behind him were two CROWS. Iris guessed right, it was the time where they would interrogate her to look for Cross.
They didn't give me my first assignment because the locations of Marshall Cross comes first. I was already expecting this, and I have no intention on spilling anything.
"Take a sit, so we can talk." Malcolm says as he puts down the tea he was drinking.
Iris sit across from him, having determined eyes. Going against this guy will be insane and crazy, it's almost the same as admitting being executed. Feeling nervous, she fiddled the necklace her mother gave her. After all this years, she still has it. It kept her calm during times like this where she would panic or become very anxious.
"I'm Malcolm C. Leverrier, an inspector from the Central Agency sent by the Vatican." He introduced himself with a stern look. He always looked displeased. That look of his was not helping Iris' condition.
"I'm-"
"No need to introduce yourself, I am perfectly aware of who you are, daughter of Cross Marian."
I swear if he cuts me off the next time around...
"I called you here today concerning your father but first thing's first, let's talk about you."
The redhead didn't like where the conversation is going. This whole thing with Leverrier is to her disliking.
"Are you really the Marshall's daughter?" Malcolm asked. Iris was greatly offended, feeling anger. Though she asked herself the same thing, was she indeed Cross Marian's child?
"I am." The redhead answered with assurance. They have the same wild hair but Iris' hair is less wild than her father's. Her mother, Lily, even said it herself that Cross is her father.
"Was Cross introduced to you as your father since you were born?"
"I refuse to answer. You are already asking personal and family-related questions." Iris says, not showing any signs of fear of the inspector. Just stay calm and collected... Calm and collected.
"Then, I'm going straight to the point. Where is Marshal Cross?"
"What if I told you he's currently in Europe? Or maybe in Afghanistan. What if I said he's in the Middle East?" The redhead had no plan on telling his location, no matter what.
"Are you sure you want to be answering me that way?" Leverrier narrowed his eyes, showing a more stern expression.
"Even if I told you his location, it was a month ago and I doubt he would be in the exact same location right now." She ignores his threat.
"Are you aware that we could use you to lure Cross out?"
"Use me in any way that will have me injured, Marshall Cross would definitely show himself. Though he will surely kill someone."
"Do you think he scares us?"
"Yes."
"He does not. We always have the choice of using you."
Iris can't determine wether or not Leverrier was indeed scared of Cross or not. It was bugging her to no end, and thus she becomes restless, tapping her heel continuously on the floor.
"Hurt me and I'll escape the Order and stop working as an exorcist."
"Then you have failed God and will become a Fallen One."
"I doubt."
"Hm? Why are you so sure?"
"That's a secret." Iris grinned mockingly.
It's because my Innocence responded when I made it clear that I hate the world. Simply leaving the Order is nothing compared to my declaration of hate.
Nothing came of the meeting. Iris was successful in not betraying her father, and she wasn't restrained or tortured. Leverrier on the other hand expected this result and didn't mind that it became this way. His goal was to observe and to know Iris, Cross' daughter. And he was successful too.
So this is the person who is loved by both good and evil, loved by God and Death, Leverrier thought.
The inspector leaves and Iris was relieved to know he and the CROWS were gone. Days later she received her first assignment with Lavi and Bookman after all they're all beginners.
Iris spends the next two years of her life in the Order. Although there was one point in time where she was restrained and locked in a cell for three months.
