Chapter Nine

Sean held his hand over his eyes. It was bright enough to blind him so much so that he could see red spots in his eyes. His eyes adjusted, allowing for him to lower his hand and noticed that he had a bag on his back.

"Get up," Mark ordered. "We're getting out of here."

"Wait, you're actually helping me?" Sean asked. Mark said nothing, only walking over to Sean and tossing a jacket from the bag into his hands.

"Get up," he said instead. "We must leave before they find out." Sean grabbed the jacket and pulled it on. Mark handed him another bag. The two locked eyes with each other. Mark nudged his head toward the door. Not hesitating, Sean and Mark took off from the room. They stepped outside and, surprised, Sean saw two guards standing by. In an instant, the guards noticed, and called out to them. Mark and Sean ran at full sprint, with the guards knowing Sean had escaped. They couldn't risk waiting around. Sean glanced back as hunters scrambled in and out of all the different rooms.

"What do we do?!" Sean exclaimed.

"Get to the door. I'll deal with them!" Mark pulled out his daggers just as the hunters attacked them. For a moment, it surprised Sean that Mark wanted to save him. His heart pounded as he raced for the door. Hunters appeared before him, causing him to stumble back. Sean glanced over at his new friend and saw how much Mark fought. The sudden heat inside his body emerged, and he couldn't understand what was happening. Glancing at his hands, he saw an orange outline with claws silhouetting over his hands. Sean let it get control and fought the hunters. With a swing of his hand, he struck the hunter, slicing his throat. Blood spurted out, forcing the hunter onto his knees. Sean kicked another hunter in between the legs and sent him sprawling into another hunter. The fight went on, when things blurred, and he sensed electrical currents spreading throughout him and going toward his fingertips. He lifted his hands into the air, cupping them together. In a quick movement, he brought his hands down and electricity shocked each hunter aside from Mark, causing the hunters to collapse. Seeing their chance, Mark and Sean raced through the door, a fresh breeze hitting them the minute they left the building.

Mark pulled out his keys and called out to Sean. "Come on!" he exclaimed. Sean followed, and they got into Mark's car before the other hunters came out to stop them. Mark started the car, he pressed hard on the gas and took off away from the compound. A sigh of relief escaped from both of them and Sean leaned back.

"Thank you," Sean said the minute they turned on the road. "I thought you'd have killed me by now." Mark shook his head. They tempted him to at first, but now he looked through Sean's perspective, he realized how unfair his boss had gone.

"Now where are you off to?" Mark asked, desperate to change the topic.

"The temple of the Kitsune." Sean turned his attention away from Mark and straight back to the road ahead of them. Majority of the time Sean paid more attention to the mass amount of vegetation. He'd been thinking a lot, and it took Mark a while until they eventually stopped at a rest stop and Mark put the car in park.

"Do you have any idea how to get to the temple?" Mark asked, turning his brown eyes toward his friend.

"I dreamed about a lady," Sean said, tapping his chin. "She said that the Kitsune will show me the right path," he continued. "I was told that you've been an important key to finding this temple." Mark paused, raising an eyebrow, unsure of how to respond. Never in his life had he been told that he was the key to Sean's journey, but never the key to finding the temple.

"Why me?" Mark asked. Sean simply shrugged his shoulders and climbed out of the car. Mark opened his mouth to say something but Sean shook his head, not willing to even answer the question. Mark sighed while Sean climbed out of the car and made his way to the bathroom. Mark stayed quiet, deeply thinking about everything that had happened in the last 24 hours. Five minutes later, Sean came back and climbed into the car. Mark backed his car out of the parking lot and turned back onto the road.

Sean and Mark rode the rest of the way in silence, even though it was awkward, Sean took a glance at the rearview mirror when suddenly his eyes flashed orange, before him he could see a strange path that led off the road entering the desert. "Mark! Wait!" Sean exclaimed, causing Mark to press on the brakes.

"What the hell?! Don't do that!" Mark yelled.

"There's a path." Sean responded, watching the trail head deeper into the desert. "We should ditch the car and travel the rest of the way on foot." Mark narrowed his eyes.

"There's nothing but desert, not even a town!" Mark gripped the steering wheel while the car whirred calmly.

"It doesn't matter," Sean answered and looked over at the path. He saw a small orange fox that paused and turned its head toward them. "The fox is showing me the path," Sean unbuckled his seatbelt, grabbed his bag and got out of the car. "Are you coming?" Mark turned off his car, grabbed his own bag and got out. He nodded his head and approached his newfound friend.

"Are you sure about this?" Mark asked.

"I'm positive I wouldn't be seeing the path if it weren't for the fox," Sean explained. "There's a temple we need to find, and the kitsune stated it would show me the way." Mark reluctantly followed him and together the two began traveling along the path through the desert, unsure of how things would turn out. Sean didn't quite care because he was one step closer to the temple and he would not stop until he got answers.
