Chapter Five

Mark covered his face with his hands. The sun was beating down on him and he wanted to get his hands on the damn kid, maybe even strangle him, but standing over him was actually his best friend Wade.

"Wade!" Mark exclaimed. The man was almost bald except for a beard and hair that grew along the sides. "What are you doing here?" Wade smiled at him. Mark hadn't expected him to come around the corner and help him, however, Mark was embarrassed since he never needed help to hunt his own prey.

"Adam sent me," Wade explained. "You were in trouble, so I came to help." Wade held out his hand, allowing Mark to reach over and grab it. "Looks like you were dealing with a strong victim."

"I could handle it." Mark said under his breath.

"Yeah, sure, that's why you nearly got your ass beaten by the prey." Wade responded. Mark scoffed. He still needed to prove himself, but all he could do was wait and wonder what else was out there.

"Whatever. Let's take him back to headquarters." Mark said stubbornly. The two walked over to the limp body of Sean McLoughlin and dragged him to the car. Mark opened the door and stuffed him into the backseat. Mark looked over at wade who was deep in thought.

"Don't you think it would be safer to tie his hands together?" Wade suggested. Mark rolled his eyes and pulled out zip ties, where he then wrapped it around Sean's wrists and tied them. They closed the backseat while Wade got into the driver's seat and Mark climbed into the passenger's seat. Changing gear, the two drove back to headquarters.

In the backseat, Sean stirred. Mark looked through his rearview mirror and saw his eyes glow orange. It was the second time that Mark had seen the orange outline. When they fought each other, he swore he saw the orange eye color, and the necklace around Sean's neck was that of a fox spirit. There was also an outline of a fox. Mark shook his head and spoke with Wade on the way back to headquarters.

"Where are you taking me?" Sean asked. "Please let me go!" he begged. Mark and Wade remained silent and ignored his constant begging. "Don't you assholes have a heart?! Or a shred of humanity?!" Rather than answering his questions, Mark turned to face his captive.

"What are you?" Mark asked.

"Why would I tell you? You were going to hunt me down and kill me!" he exclaimed. "I did nothing to you!"

"We don't care. Our boss wants to see you and we're doing like he asked." Wade said in annoyance. Wade had been getting annoyed with all the bickering and Sean's yelling. "So, both of you shut up so I can focus on my driving!" Wade focused on the road ahead. Mark remained quiet until they came back to headquarters. A large brick building with red and white colors. Wade parked the car, the two climbed out and Mark walked around the side of the car before dragging Sean out by the arms. Sean struggled for a good while, but Mark kept a tight grip on him.

"How can you do this without questioning your boss's orders?! What have I done to deserve this?!" Mark ignored him and dragged him into the building at the same time as Adam arrived at the entrance. He glanced at their captive and smiled.

"Nice of you to arrive, and I see you've brought our little guest," Adam said. "Take him to the holding cell, Wade," he continued, and turned to Mark. "Mark, I need you to go to med bay so they can take care of your wounds. I'll catch up on my purpose in bringing Sean here." Mark nodded and left to go to med bay. He walked down the white hallways until he came across a door that said Medical. The medical doors slid open allowing Mark to enter. Stepping in, there were hospital beds spread out in every part of the room. Some have gone further upstairs. A petite red-head walked up to him with a white lab coat.

"Hey Mr. Fischbach," she said. "You must have taken a beating. Let me patch you up." Ashley guided Mark over to the table, where she began taking care of his wounds.

"Thanks, Ashley." Mark said. She'd been the youngest doctor in the room. Mark was always glad when she took care of him. He, in fact, trusted her with his own life. Ashley stepped away and grabbed her tools and took care of Mark's wounds.

"How'd the hunt go?" she asked, dressing Mark's wounds.

"It went okay," Mark responded, mostly focusing on small talk. Mark sucked in a breath as she touched his forehead with peroxide. "But this hunt had been a lot harder than I expected."

"Why's that?" she asked.

"The person I hunted had special powers." He said thoughtfully.

"Like what?" she asked, intrigued. Ashely dabbed the cut on Mark's lip, causing him to wince in pain.

"He glowed orange," Mark answered. "None of the other victims experienced that." Ashley rose an eyebrow and sat a cloth on the tray.

"What color were his eyes?"

"They went from blue to orange," Mark answered. "Why do you seem troubled by this?"

"Listen to me Mark," she turned around and looked him right in the eyes. "If this is true, you aren't dealing with an ordinary human," she kept going. "Your dealing with a creature that hasn't been around in years. Why it resurfaced now, I have no clue." Mark narrowed his eyes, unsure of how he should react to this entire situation. It only meant one thing: a revolution was going to start and it would involve going against the government and stopping them from ever taking control ever again. "Believe me or don't, but Sean is the key to defeating the government. And you are in the middle of it."
