Til a Death Parts You
Remus was sweating and he wasn't sure if it was because of the fine dark blue suit he had insisted upon wearing or nervous energy that was pummeling through his veins. He suspected it was a bit of both.
James finished off knotting the red silk tie Sirius had picked out (and he had returned to purchase) and dusted Remus's shoulders off before taking a step back. He smiled. "I'm not an expert but I do reckon you're pretty handsome, Moony."
Remus's mouth twitched with the hint of a smile and then he held out his shaking hands. "I'm so fucking nervous. Why am I so nervous? I love him and I've been with him for bloody years. I've seen the worst and best of that idiot. Why am I scared NOW?"
"Dunno, I reckon it's natural before tying the knot." James turned and took out a ring box from Remus's luggage - the bands that had belonged to his parents were inside. He tucked it into his own pocket safely, and said, "I'm really very, very happy for you."
"I'm really very, very happy for me, too," Remus said. "Soon, this'll be you who's getting hitched and - well, I reckon it'll be Sirius with you and me with Lily, but you know." He smiled. "I would happily return the favor of doing your tie up if I could."
"Thank, Moony, that means a lot to me."
They shared a hug and James took one last look over himself in the mirror, then glanced over Remus as well. "Alright. Are you ready?"
Remus nodded because he couldn't form words.
James led the way out of the little hut that he and Remus were in, through a maze of foliage - big, glossy leaves with huge colorful flowers that smelled so sweet and honeyed. Remus was thankful for James being there - he felt he might be lost if he'd been alone. They emerged then onto a small beach, and there was a small assortment of people gathered there. There was Minerva McGonagall and Ephinstone Urquart, Newt and Tina Scamander with little Bradley and Rolf, and Dorcas Meadows with Gideon Prewett, Frank Longbottom and Ali Prewitt, Peter Pettigrew, Marlene Mackinnon and Emmalene Vance, Charlus and Dora Potter, and Elva Greenwood. Remus's heart flooded with emotion as he looked around, and he could hardly breathe.
Across the small beach, there floated half shell coconuts, with little candles burning in them, giving off a beautiful aroma, and there was a great deal of tiny little white flowers and bright orange hibiscus in bunches strung about everywhere, their neon color not obscuring the beauty of the white flowers, but enhancing their simplicity. James saw Remus admiring a bunch and he leaned over and said, "Lily says they're a metaphor."
"What?" Remus looked at James.
"Dunno, maybe that's the sort of plant they are?" James said with a shrug. "She was making them this morning and she said 'oh what a lovely metaphor, don't you agree?' And honestly I had no idea what she was talking about and I just agreed."
Remus laughed.
He was in such a good mood that he didn't even have it in him to explain it to James.
They were ushered up front of everyone, who took seats on various cushions and chairs that they drew up themselves with their wands (Newt kindly made a duplicate for Elva, the only muggle present). James ruffled Remus's hair so the curls hung just a tiny bit onto his forehead, and he smiled. "You're about to be married, Rey."
Remus nodded, his throat constricted.
"Remember every detail." James patted Remus's shoulder and stepped to the side, allowing Remus to stare down the cleared path they'd taken from the garden foliage. He held his breath without meaning to, dizzy with the anticipation.
Lily came out of the garden next, barefoot and beautiful, her long dress fluttering around her ankles as she walked across the sand. "Blimey," James whispered.
Remus chuckled under his breath.
And then, there was Sirius.
Sirius and Regulus, standing side by side, dressed matching in Sirius's pistachio green. Sirius's hair was up and pulled back into a knot, his pocket watch chain hanging from his suspenders and into his pocket, his face pale and excited. Regulus, too, looked pale and excited, and they started their walk towards the waiting Remus.
Regulus had never felt so important in his life as he did then, on the side of his brother, walking toward Remus Lupin. His throat ached with how much emotion was captured inside of him, and he squeezed Sirius's hand tightly with his own. "Thank you," he whispered.
"For what?" Sirius asked, voice trembling.
"Letting me do this, letting me be here."
Sirius nodded.
"I know I'm not your first choice," Regulus said gently, "But I am glad that I ended up your only choice."
"You deserved to be my first choice," Sirius admitted, "Even if I'm usually a twat about it. It should be you here. You're exactly where you belong."
Regulus thought he might just burst into flame from his joy at hearing Sirius say those words. He had to divert his attention straight ahead to keep the tears from coming. He marched ever prouder alongside Sirius to where Remus, James, and now Lily were standing.
In the seated crowd, Mrs. Potter cried into a handkerchief that Minnie had pulled from her pocket, though she looked like she were about to burst out crying herself at any moment. Normally, he would've begged her not to cry, but Sirius had eyes for no one but Remus at that moment. He had an acute case of tunnel vision for certain.
He was so focused on Remus he barely noticed Albus Dumbledore standing just beyond him, his hands folded respectfully and a smirk playing upon his lips as Sirius approached and came to a stop.
"Who gives this wizard away?" Dumbledore asked, peering, with a smile, down his nose at Regulus.
Regulus hesitated ever so slightly. He didn't want to give his brother away, having only just gotten him. He took a deep breath, and he nodded, too choked up to verbally reply, and took his arm out of the crook of Sirius's and he bowed to Remus in a very refined sort of way that was telling of his and Sirius's upbringing, and then turned and sat down next to Newt Scamander in the front row.
Dumbledore smiled as Remus nearly tripped over his own two feet stepping closer to Sirius, his eyes wet and threatening tears. "Don't you dare cry dammit," Sirius's voice was choked and squeaky. "If you cry, I'll cry twice as hard." He swallowed back the urge to sob and added, "You bloody told me you were going to work."
"Yeah, I did, didn't I?" Remus croaked. "Surprise."
"Much better than the ministry, this."
Remus nodded.
Dumbledore cleared his throat and Remus and Sirius both looked at him, their hands clasped before them. "I am here in an honored position," Dumbledore began, "Asked to officiate this wedding between two very, very in love souls. We, your friends and family gathered here this day, have watched the pairing of you come to fruition over many long, and steady months - and a beautiful, loving relationship blossom from... puppy love... to a loyal and passsion-filled devotion through which you have grown, learned, and depended upon each other."
Now Minerva McGonagall was openly crying. Urquart pulled out his own hankie and handed it to her and she clutched it to her face, sniffling loudly as she watched.
Dumbledore continued, raising his voice slightly to carry over the sniffles and shuffling in the crowd. "Perhaps some may say this union ought not to be, but love is more powerful than human belief, more powerful than social standards and expectations. Love is a magic with an unparalleled strength, able to decimate even the most dark of all magic, and of all human constructs. It is, then, with utmost pride and joy that I am to unite the two of you in a magical bond more powerful than that of the construct of marriage, but by an everlasting bond - an unbreakable vow of love and loyalty."
James glanced at Lily and their eyes locked and James gave her that crooked smile she loved so dearly, and for a moment she could imagine it - their moment like this would come, not that long from now. She felt a skip in her heart's rhythm, something like the flickering of a candle light, and just as warm and comforting.
Dumbledore looked to James. "The rings please, Mister Potter."
James nodded and reached into his pocket, pulling out the little box and handing it over to Dumbledore, who thanked him, and turned back to Remus and Sirius. He opened the box and drew out the two rings from within. With a twiddle of his fingers, the rings were floating there before him, directly between Remus and Sirius.
"Love is never meant to be broken, and nor is this union. You are no more two souls who have found one another, but rather one whose missing pieces have been found." Dumbledore turned to Remus first. "Dear, dear Mister Lupin," he began, "Do you, in all of your right wits and clearest mind, agree to love and treasure Sirius Orion Black for all of the days which you shall share together, in good days and in bad, with dedication, patience, and faithfulness - until one day a death parts you?"
Remus nodded, reaching up and taking the ring from the air, bringing it to Sirius's finger. "I do," he answered, and slipped the ring onto Sirius's hand - where it belonged.
Sirius smiled at it, and then up at Remus.
"And you, Mister Black, do you, in all of your right wits and clearest mind, agree to love and treasure Remus John Lupin for all of the days which you shall share together, in good days and in bad, with dedication, patience, and faithfulness - until one day a death parts you?"
Sirius nodded, dangerously close to crying. "I do," he just manager to breathe. His hands shook as he put the second ring onto Remus's finger.
"Then I, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, as Grand Sorcerer, Supreme Mugwump, and Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, with the power of the Order of Merlin First Class vested upon myself by the British Ministry of Magic, do ask for you to take one another's hand, and begin your lives together, in union. Now, you may kiss your husband."
Remus and Sirius met directly in the middle, as they, being so very different from one another, often had to do. Their lips locked and Sirius cupped Remus's face in his palms, and the wind blew gently across the beach, ruffling the foliage and trees. There might have been fireworks going off, Sirius was not sure, as he very well could've simply seen them in his mind.
"I have one more surprise for you... husband," Remus said quietly, shyly, and when Sirius pulled back he saw Remus was flushed.
"You do?" Sirius asked.
Remus nodded, and he turned toward the crowd. "Mr. Scamander?"
Newt stood up and turned in a quick, jerky motion, pulling his briefcase from under the chair. He opened the clasps and whistled one clear, true note. From within the case there came leaping a unicorn with a golden horn and hooves.
Sirius's jaw dropped and he covered his face with his palms, and, unable to hold back his tears any more, he started crying as Remus took his hand and practically dragged him over to the unicorn for their grand exit from the ceremony.
