Marauders' One Shot/Headcannon 2. Sirius' Boots
Sirius was raised in a very strict pureblood household, which obviously had extremely pointed ideas about how the members of their family were supposed to portray themselves. This included how to talk, act, and even dress.
The classic uniform that showed status consisted of the dress robes in only black or varying shades of dark blues and greens. Hair was to be neatly combed, and shoes were meant to be dressy. Flats or heels for the ladies, and nice, freshly polished dress shoes for the men. It was classic, elegant, and was sure to flash your status whenever you walked through the streets of Diagon Alley.
Sirius Orion Black, of course, was the biggest exception to this rule.
When he was forced to return to his home for holidays, he made sure to do the exact opposite of what his parents would tell him to. His hair was long, and though he took excellent care of it, it was always styled messy. Ruffled up and occasionally tossed into a ponytail that rested at the nape of his neck. He wore the muggle jeans that Remus always got him around Christmas time for that exact purpose, and a T-shirt referencing a muggle band that Peter listened to, and had gotten for him at a concert. It was a size to big, since Peter had mentally misjudged his friend's build, but that just made Sirius love it even more. A leather jacket from James completed the image of his mother's disapproval, but Sirius' favorite bit of the whole outfit, were his boots.
The boots were knee high, brown, worn, and caked in dirt. He'd stomp around in them obnoxiously; set them on the sofa, even up on the dining table when it was just him and Regulas in the house, who would never admit to quite liking the unique sense of style his older brother had developed. He'd received those original shoes from Lily for Christmas. It was a tradition in the Gryffindor house at the time to do a secret gift exchange, and she'd drawn his name. They were supposed to originally be a joke, but Sirius had fallen in love with them, and wouldn't take them off for weeks.
Through more of an accident than anything else, Sirius' favorite place to store his wand, became his boots. They were they perfect length for him to be able to reach down and grab it without any incident, and he'd be seen wandering the halls with it still poking out from the top. McGonagall had gotten after him for it once, saying it could fall out or break if he stepped wrong. What if he left it in those shoes and didn't wind up wearing them?
James had proceeded to shout across the room, "he sleeps in those bloody things, Minnie! I don't think we have anything to worry about!"
Over the years, Sirius developed a massive collection of boots. His preferred style were the knee length, but he had some thigh high ones. Unfortunately, Sirius had rather small feet, and after he moved in with the newly wedded Potters, there were some mixups between him and Lily concerning who's shoes were who's. She liked to get her footwear for around the house a half or even a full size bigger that what she actually wore, so Sirius was easily able to wear her shoes out and about. He wasn't the tidiest person, and Lily didn't often have the desire to clean up after him and slowly joined in the mess. Her ankle boots would get thrown in with with his taller ones, and if either of them were in a huge hurry, they'd grab the first matching pair they saw and bolt out the door.
One specific time, Sirius had been relaxing in the home, listening to the radio an not doing much when a patronus from Remus zipped into the room, alerting him of a Death Eater attack happening not far from where he was. Sirius, out of habit, grabbed a pair of shoes, threw them on, shoved his wand into them, and bolted out the door. Attempting to grab it out of the shoes proved difficult, and ended with Sirius flat on his face after hopping on one foot to reach his weapon, and a good deal of laughter from both Aurors and Death Eaters.
Sirius returned home an hour after James and Lily had gotten back from a mission of their own, and promptly began sorting through the pile of shoes by the door. When Lily inquired why, he snapped his gaze to her, glaring slightly.
"Because if Kingsley ever catches me in a pair of your bloody Uggs again, I think I might just fall flat on my face again and actually kill myself!"
