First Year

Sirius was rushing back to the common room after serving his eighth detention within the first 3 months of school, when he heard a small sob. He frowned. It was 10 minutes until curfew, who would be out this late? He peaked into the classroom where he thought he heard the sound and saw a small red headed girl, crying her eyes out. Sirius heart pounded in sympathy. He recognised the girl- she was in Gryffindor, also in their year. Sirius went over to her and gently put his arm around her.
"Hey, are you okay? What happened?"
The girl looked startled to see him.
"I-"
"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to" he said quicky, noticing her expression. She took a deep breath.
"No it's okay, it's just my sister, she... she sent me a letter saying that, that I'm a freak and that she hopes that I never come home again and that... she hates me." She whispered the last few words. Sirius was taken aback. He knew all about imperfect families, but having your sister say all that? That was harsh.
"That's horrible Lily, I'm so sorry." Sirius muttered. "Wait it is Lily right? Right? Please tell me I'm right or I'm gonna feel like a downright idiot."
The girl shared a small smile.
"Yeah, it's Lily. You're Sirius, aren't you?"
Sirius flashed a grin.
"Righty ho then Lilpot, yes I am going to call you that and nothing you say will change that, let me tell you the wonderful story of my kind, adoring family."

And that is why, Lily and Sirius walked into the Gryffindor common at 2 in the morning, grinning from ear to ear, both with a new friend.
