The Old Man's House
"So the old man is dead..." You murmur, trying to remember his face. He hadn't been a social man, gruff, and more than once went on a drunken rant in his front yard about witches targeting him. Crazy old guy-
"Yeah, so how about we check out his things before they go on auction?" The strawberry blonde beauty closes her eye with a smile that reminded you of a Cheshire cat.
"Oh no, last time we went stealing, the best thing I got was a pretty ashtray. I don't even smoke. I'm just using it as a paperweight." You deadpan, pointing to the said object.
"Come on! He's been here since the town was built! Even a legendary Mage Hunter! We're bound to find some good stuff! Even with your picky taste!" She gushes.
"What do you think Robin?" You look to your other roommate. She closes her book and stands up with a soft smile.
"I'm in." She hums. Dammit...
"Alright, we heading out now?" You guess, peering at the clock as you start to change.
"Yes!" Nami bursts dashing to her room.
"She's been eyeing that house for a while." Robin comments.
"Yeah, I figured, but that old man always put me on edge," You shrug, pulling on your stealth clothes.
"He did have that effect on many." She muses walking out to her room. You finishdressing, going to your window and peering out through the blinds at the house two streets down.A frown crosses your lips before you grab your backpack and go out to meet the other two.
"Off to the creepy house on the block." You give a thumbs up. Nami gushes again and leads the way out. You and Robin trail after, taking in thenight air.
"Nice night to steal." Robin hums.
"It'ss not stolen if it doesn't currently belong to someone." Nami giggles.
"I'm concerned about your logic." You sigh as a breeze brushes over you. Tonight was nice at least and definitely felt like a mischievous night. "Maybe I'll go see him tonight." You smile a bit to yourself.
"Ugh... You're still with Dellinger?" Nami tosses you a slight frown. "You can do so much better."
"Mmm, I don't see why you don't like him Nami." You sigh.
"I just don't trust him, he seems off." She shrugs. You look to Robin for input but she just offers a small smile.
"Anyway, let's find out if the back door is going to open." You change the subject, climbing over the wooden fence and unlatching the gate for them. They brush by, Nami smiling cheerfully before going to the back door and working her skills. You look up at the house again, remembering one of your few interactions with the former owner.
The papers are ripped from your hands by a gust and you stop to watch them flutter away with a blank expression. Those papers had killed your spirit, you had actually felt some relief when they flew away.
One catches the old man's leg and he rather quickly retrieves the papers as they went by. You blink back, frowning when you realize you hadtaken a wrong turn home. "Oh, sorry Mr. Sakazuki." You speak up, approaching him as he looks over the papers with a stern face. He looks to you as you stop a bit away.
"These papers do not determine what you become. You do." He states before promptly burning them with his lighter. You blink at him in surprise as he tosses them to the ground before shuffling to his mailbox, muttering to himself about the idiotic new age or something.
A smile creeps onto your lips, the only words you could think of for the weight being lifted off your shoulders was. "Thank you Mr. Sakazuki."
"It's open!" Nami chimes, drawing you out of your flashback. You peer in as she eases the door open.
"Alright, let's go see what we can find." You hum following her in. The house was dark, though you had assumed it would be. The only light filtered through slits in the curtain from the moon outside. From what you could see, everything was immaculately clean and in a precise order. Glass cases lined one of the walls, each shelf lined with artifacts that you could only imagine seeing in a museum.
"I knew this would be great!!" Nami gushes with stars in her eyes- or maybe those were dollar signs...
"This is lovely, and no security, he must've been confident with his ability to protect his home." Robin murmurs softly, taking everything in.
"No security that we've found." You hum, peering into the cases to see antiques that looked hundred of years old lining their shelves. You shift your gaze from the cases to a bookcase on the opposite wall. Furrowing your eyebrows, you tilt your head in slight confusion. Something seemed off about it, but you couldn't quite place it. "Hey Nami, wasn't he a Mage Hunter? Where is all his stuff?" You question the strawberry blonde as you make your way over to the bookcase, eyes roaming over the shelves trying to figure out what was wrong with it.
"Yeah, good question..." She murmurs, looking it over as well.
"The Mage Wars..." Robin takes out the old book to look it over and the bookshelf slides open.
"As always, Robin found a way." Namismiles. You glance through the hole that the bookshelf had uncovered, looking for any sort of alarm, but finding none.
"Well, I guess you were right. No security." You murmur, stepping into the darkened room.
"Told you so." Robin breathes as Nami leads the way in and down the stairs to a rather large room that lights up when you reach the bottom step, revealing numerous old weapons and armors, newspaper clips cover the wall, anything magic related was on them. On the furthest wall, an old map, that looked hand-drawn. Perhaps from when the town was first built, before the mage wars?
You walk through the room slowly, your eyes roaming over the different things in the room before they land on the map. You stare at it for a few seconds before carefully pulling it from the wall and rolling it up. "I want this." You say holding it up briefly before tucking it under your arm.
"An old map..." Nami sweatdrops, "I can understand Robin and her books but..."
"I think it's cool, shows how much the town has grown since before the wars." Robin smiles, taking some of the old books that sat on the desk and places them in her bag. Nami just shrugs, grabbing some trinkets and some jewelry.
You chuckle, looking over a few other things that lay strewn about in the room, but don't really find much else of interest. Sighing you turn to the other two women. "You two ready to get out of here?"
"Yeah! I can make a great profit with this!" Nami chimes happily.
"And I am excited to read these." Robin hums lightly.
You glance around the room one more time before slipping back through the hole in the wall, sliding another book in the others place so the shelf would slide back over the hole. "No need in anyone else finding that." You hum, turning to leave the home.
"They probably will once they start to prepare for the auction." Nami points out as you three go back out the back door and head home.
"Mm, I want to watch a movie tonight," Robin states lightly.
"Please, not another horror marathon..." Nami pouts.
"Maybe romance then?" Robin giggles.
"Movie sounds great. I'm up for whatever." You tell them, unlocking the door to your house and pushing it open. "I'll start on popcorn, just let me go put this in my room!" You tell them, going to your room to place the map on your desk. You unroll it, glancing over it quickly before going to the kitchen to grab popcorn for the three of you.
Robin grabs some blankets while Nami makes some mixed drinks. "I don't know why, but I'm in the mood to watch fluff, you know?" She hums.
"Fluff is good." You laugh, settling down onto the couch with a large bowl filled with popcorn. "So fluffy romance it is."
Robin hands you a blanket while Nami sets the drinks on the table. "Alright, I have just the movie saved." She breathes before turning it on as they both settle in on either side of you.
Nami hadn't been wrong when she had said she had a good movie. It was adorable, completely fluffy and romantic. Once the credits roll, you stand from the couch with a yawn, placing the empty popcorn bowl on the coffee table. "Well, I think I'll head to bed. Night guys." You tell the two, giving a wave over your shoulder as you retreat to your bedroom.
They say goodnight to you and you stretch as you enter your room, peering at the map thoughtfully. You pause, eyes landing on a blue spot on it. Was it... Moving? No, it was late so your eyes were playing tricks. You change your clothes for bed and climb into bed with a yawn, falling fast asleep.
