Chapter 10

Rebekah stuck by Levi's side, she didn't particularly like his company, he was far too blunt and a little insulting. But, it was better than the endless questions from Armin, and her repetitive answers. As much as she loved her own work, she didn't enjoy explaining it to people who wouldn't understand.

"Hey doc, start a fire." Levi ordered her, since the others were all buying supplies from the nearest town.

"Yeah sure." The woman took out her lighter, lighting a bit of dried up grass to start it. "What?" The woman asked as Levi looked at her bewildered, that wasn't what he meant, but it still worked out.

"You got any more questions?" He wondered, but in reality, he just wanted it to be his turn to ask her a question.

"Not that I can think of." Beka shrugged finally catching onto what he meant. "Why? You got any for me?"

"What if I do? Doesn't mean I can ask it." He replied as he added more sticks onto their campfire before setting up a kettle on a frame. "Tea?"

"Sure." She answered him, thinking of a question she could possibly shoot his way. "Have you got any siblings? You seem like an overprotective older brother type." She asked him.

"Maybe I was." He looked away from her.

"Was?" She asked again.

"Your question is over." He denied her an answer. "I take it that I can ask mine now?"

"Didn't know you were so childish." The woman scoffed, she let herself be played by him, otherwise, she wouldn't have even asked the pointless question. "But if you're so desperate, then I'll allow it."

"It's must've been tricky to get all the resources for your inventions. So how'd you do it?" He asked, but Beka knew there was something very wrong with his specific question, maybe he knew something.

"It wasn't legal, if that's what you're wondering." She replied.

"I'm fully aware of that. So how'd you do it?"

Normally, she'd just answer him, but considering he'd avoided her question, she was holding a grudge. "Sounds like another question to me." She argued. "So, how many siblings did ya have?"

"You're the childish one here." He retorted, mimicking her insult. "But I guess I'll play the game. I had a brother and a sister, both younger than me."

"One of the things I didn't miss when I left, was people saying my name. All I heard when I lived with Hange was 'Beka, Beka, Beka, how did the baby get into the tummy?' That was such an awkward question to answer." She laughed, trying to relate, but Levi didn't share the same view. His relationship with his family must've been different to hers. "But I suppose our experiences are completely different, I ran away, and I assume yours are no longer with us. Sorry for bringing that up." She apologised, she often didn't do that, but she felt as though it was necessary.

"How'd you acquire your resources then?" He'd moved on.

"Mercenaries." She summed up. "Reliable ones at that. They were based in the underground and since there's a mining facility nearby, they just stole a few things for me. But I didn't even know them, faceless, nameless. I can't say the same on my end of the bargain. They gave me a time and a place, when I'd go there, the merchandise would be waiting for me. Though getting my hands on the resources has been a chore recently, more specifically, in the last 6 years."

"How so?"

"The mercenaries went off the grid. I suspect they finally got enough money to go above ground, but that had to mean they were seeing other people because I gave them approximately the amount needed to pass the stairs. But they would've needed more than just that. Food, housing, etcetera." Suddenly, the cogs began spinning inside Rebekah's head, why did he ask her that of all questions? How many siblings did he say he had? "Say, how long have you been a scout?"

"Too long."

"Let me guess, 6 years?" She wondered, causing the captain to look at her with suspicion. "What can I say? I'm a genius."

"A genius who just admitted to theft and hiring mercenaries." He handed her some tea.

"I've done worse." She shrugged, taking a sip of the hot drink. "I take it instead of worrying about housing and food, you guys joined the military. Though, I can't imagine you getting through cadet training, especially if we had the same commandant."

Levi nodded, he didn't need to explain his whole life story to a maniacs sister, one who was equally as psychotic as the younger Zoe. So he let her jump to conclusions, it didn't really matter, because he was certain that despite her words, Rebekah Zoe would soon be running from the law once again, leaving Hange with false hope.

"Captain, we bought the supplies." Jean alerted as the group approached the small campfire.

"The MP's were handing out these flyers." Armin said while handing Levi a sample. "Dr Zoe, so far, I don't think anyone really knows that you're working with us. We could use that to our advantage." He began strategising. "But unfortunately, if this is all true, the scouts will be disbanded, they said they'll be hunting for us in the mountains tonight and posting guards on all the vital roads. No one can get through them without a pass. So, what now?"

"That's quite the sketch." The woman peaked over Levi's shoulder. "Really brings out your inner child." She joked, seeing that his portrait resembled a child rather than someone her own age.

"We should hurry and find Eren." Mikasa brought her back into reality.

"He'll be fine. That gives us one day before they reach Reiss' estate and we need every second we can get to come up with a plan." Levi tossed the paper away and quickly finished his tea.

"Captain." Sasha whispered. "I hear footsteps. Sounds like someone's approaching."

Without hesitation, Beka gripped onto her guns, but was quickly warned to stop. "I'm helping." She protested, but the captain had an alternate idea.

"We'll lure them into a trap, we're not exactly looking to rack up a kill count here." He advised.

"Fine." She put her guns away.

"I think I have an idea." Armin suggested.

Ultimately, his idea was live bait, which was coincidentally the only person who wasn't a scout, in other words, she was the last person they'd shoot at if it came to it. But that didn't put her mind at ease, neither did her shiny armour concealed beneath her beige waistcoat, because in retrospect, she was a sitting duck, waiting for the enemy to get close enough for the others to intercept.

"Don't move." One of the MP's ordered, she could tell he was a few inches away from jabbing his gun into her back. "Turn around slowly."

Rebekah raised her arms and turned to face them, but they were shocked to see a civilian smiling back at them. "Easy now, I was just getting some samples."

"You're the mad scientist, aren't you." The feminine MP accused, being spot on.

"Ye-"

"Not a sound, don't say a word." The boy interrupted, still pointing his gun her way, it was strange, they weren't supposed to know she was with the scouts, but then again, she was still technically a criminal. "Listen and do exactly as I instruct."

"Yeah, I'll pass." The doctor sighed.

"W-what? Can't you see my gun?"

"Yes, very impressive." She replied passively. "Though a gun is the least of my concerns." She added, seeing her new acquaintances in the treetops. "Anytime now." She rolled her eyes before both Levi and Mikasa jumped from their positions and held their swords against the military police's throats.

"That's the way." Levi taunted. "Now hand your weapons to the lady in front."

"Shame, I no longer see the gun in your hand." Rebekah laughed at the boy as she removed his weapon. "Oh and Levi, next time you use me as bait, at least try to be punctual."

"I'll keep that in mind." He replied as he took away the MP's jackets, finding their ID's in their pockets. "Now then, you're Stohess district military police, private Marlowe Freudenberg. Same assignment, private Hitch Dreyse. We'll need to dispose of you." He informed, forcing the two to shiver in fear, but Hitch decided to speak up, obviously holding a somewhat grudge.

"Because of what you did, Stohess was a graveyard. Over a hundred people were killed. You bastards, I bet you think you're some kind of heroes of justice, but you're not, you dropped dozens of families straight into hell on that mission of yours." Hitch accused, but Rebekah wasn't around when that commotion was occurring, she was happily renovating her new gear, residing inside Mitras.

"Yeah, we did." Levi agreed.

"Hey you." Hitch changed her target, realising Levi didn't particularly care. "You were in the southern cadet corps, right? So you trained with Annie Leonhardt? You a friend of hers? No, she wouldn't have made friends there either, too gloomy and unapproachable for that. She was just afraid of people like a scared little kid. Now I'll never get the chance to learn anything about her. She's officially listed as missing, you know why? It's because one of your titans turned her into an ugly red stain on the streets!"

"Actually." Levi countered. "It's because the titan we captured was Annie Leonhardt herself."

"And the plot thickens." Rebekah chimed in, though sensing she was sort of an outsider in the case of Annie Leonhardt.

"Goddammit, it makes me sick, nobody knows a thing about this world, except for the bastard at the centre of it all. We're letting you go." Levi decided. "But we'll need to give ourselves a head start on you."

"Hey! Captain Levi, please let me join your cause!" Marlowe begged. "I believe that the military police are in the wrong here, if there's anyway that I can fight this worlds injustice, then thats what I want to do." He continued.

"Easy, calm down." Levi ignored, he didn't exactly trust the military police.

"I swear I wont let you down sir."

"No." Levi denied again. "I have no way of telling that you have enough resolve to make an enemy of the state. Let's go, take them deeper into he woods and tie them up, Sasha."

"Maybe they could help us? They were friends of Annie, right?" Jean asked himself, his aloud thinking lured the scientist in, she didn't know much about Annie, but she did enjoy studying people.

"I think it's entirely possible." She answered for him. "However, can and will are two completely different things."

"What do you mean?" He asked her.

"Bowl-cut doesn't seem to be lying, he does want to help, but Levi's right. Just how far are those two willing to go in order to aid our victory?" She raised a few questions, visibly seeing Jean reconsider and run up to Levi.

"Hey captain, would you let me do it instead?" The scout asked, it was clear levi was sceptical, but with a curt nod from the doctor, he allowed it. After all, Jean was a capable scout and could defend himself against two unarmed prisoners.

"Knock yourself out." He agreed, causing the scout to hurry away to catch up with Sasha. "Doc." He then turned to the scientist. "You're plotting something, aren't you?"

"What if I am?" She quirked a brow.

"If my squad are harmed because of your recklessness, I'll see to it that you face the same fate." He warned, but the woman simply smiled in return.

"Relax, Captain. I know what I'm doing." She replied. "Don't you trust me?"

"Trust needs to be earned."

"I expected nothing less from a mercenary. But don't worry, I'll strive to get on you good-side. If you have one, that is."
