Chapter 9
The bedroom at times like that felt far too small, its walls looked like if they were closing after her in every breath she took. She wanted to scream her lungs out, to escape the world she lived in, but right now, as she was sitting in the bed, the sun over a clear sky. She could see the window and the sky from where she was, only hugging her knees. Earlier that day, she had ushered her servant out claiming she felt ill, she trusted her handmaid would have told Emrys about it already. Or anyone, for that matter, rumors spread fast on the castle.
She knew the sorcerer would see her the next day at breakfast, fume for a while that she had come up with the occurrence to get sick exactly on the day they were both allowed to go out. Uther was difficult on that matter, he didn't want people to know that one of Igraine's daughter was still roaming the palace "freely", and the awareness that he had many enemies (justifiably so, Morgana often thought) made him afraid someone would try to kill him the moment Emrys wasn't around.
Morgana felt selfish, now she had shifted, curled up under the mattress. Her mouth was dry, the vase where there used to be water laid broken in multiple pieces over the ground, the small puddle over the stone floor had nearly dried. The incident made her terrified of touching anything in her bedroom that wasn't the bed. Emrys would probably be disappointed about the incident, and Uther would yet again insist to him that Gorlois' daughter wasn't someone ought to be trusted.
There was a knock on her wooden door, Morgana perked her head up from underneath the sheets, it wasn't like people had a habit of knocking on her door. She had already made a point to Winifred that she could come in and out as she saw fit and in the rare occasions where Uther had the kindness of paying her a visit, he just barged inside, her sister and Emrys were the only other two people who paid her a visit, but Emrys' visits to her bedroom were far and in between only to drop her at the entrance and it had been well over a year since she had last seen her sister.
"Who is it?" She questioned, raising her voice.
"It's... me" There was a pause "Emrys, Emrys Myrddin" She easily recognized her friend's voice, but a part of her smiled softly at the need he felt to identify himself beyond. "Miss Winifred told me you were sick, I was checking in if I could see what affection you were suffering. Perhaps there might be something I can do"
Morgana's eyes shot wide open, her perfect plan of staying in her room for the rest of her life skimmed over the fact that any illness she might be suffering could effortlessly be healed by the young man.
"Nothing you can do" She spat back at him, her voice nearly trembling alongside the table by the side of the bed, making a few of the crystals still in there fall to the ground, her eyes opened wide and her heart skipped a heartbeat as she jumped out of the bed, the sheet above her was now floating nearly a palm above the feather mattress. "No no no no no" She mumbled trying to push the soft fabric down to no avail.
"Are you sure?" His voice came once again, her breath became faster "I'm pretty sure there must be something I can do. If you find yourself indispose, I could always come back later."
"Go away" She said, raising the voice slightly, this time is was the crystals of the window that trembled.
"Lady Morgana..."
"I said go away!" She raised her voice at the top of her lungs.
The chandelier balanced on its hold, the curtain hooks fell, letting the stick that held the curtain up fall alongside the fabric, the table turned over, the crystal had also trembled and although a crack could be seen across it, there were no mayor signs of rupture, except for the door that was now barely hanging Emrys behind it, both his hands up holding it from falling above him. Morgana trembled and took a step back.
"Are you okay?" His voice was devoid of any usual teasing tone, and instead was soft. He fixed the door, moving one hand above it to put it in its rightful place while he stepped inside. She took a step backwards until she was leaning against the wall. He put his fingers above the floating sheet but made no movement to stop the action.
No words came out of her mouth, she stared at the ground while his eyes diverted across the room, whether it was to look at the damage of the curiosity of stepping her bedroom for the first time, she had no way of knowing.
"What happened Ana?"
"Please, please don't tell him" Her eyes were prickled with tears, he pressed both hands over his mouth and when he opened them the shadow of a butterfly came out and faded as the closer it got to the roof of the bedroom. "I thought I could control it, that I could hide it. It escaped my control, Emrys. I don't know what to do anymore. He'll notice the window and who knows what he'll do"
He slowly approached her, while she tried furiously to wipe the tears out of her cheeks. Then, Morgana felt a pair of arms surround her and she froze.
"It's fine." He assured passing one hand over her curly hair. Her lips curved tightly upwards for a split second. "You will be fine. Lady Morgana"
"I hope so" She mumbled.
"I have a small question" He broke the hug apart, placing both hands behind himself "How long has this been going on?"
"Little over a month" She hesitated, taking a second to respond until she recalled the incident where she had turned the chimney off.
"You could have told me." He said, looking to her, standing tall above her. "I know my intelligence leaves you speechless young Lady, but I consider myself fit enough to teach the art of the movements of nature"
"Imbecile. More than your intelligence it's your stench that astounds me" She spat back, she laughed slightly when he rolled his eyes "Would you do that, teach me?"
"What are friends for if not to help you control your talents and hide them from an evil brute?" He shrugged, giving her a small wink, her heart skipped a beat and the heat reached her cheeks "I can deal with the window, but I'll teach you how to fix that jug and put the sheets down. Which reminds me, winter is coming, is that all you have to cover yourself on the cold days?"
Morgana didn't answer, instead, she fixed her view on the puddle that had almost dried.
"We need to do this quick, so I hope you are a fast learner, there is a lot we still have to do downtown. I'll be seeing you four times a week to teach you how to control your power" Morgana nodded, a smile wide in her face.
Jonathan stared at Valerie's front door for a second before walking into his own home, soccer practice had forced him to stay behind, so now it was too close to five PM and the sky was covered in dark, heavy clouds. The teen opened the wooden door, leaving his shoes near the doorway. Near the entrance, his mom was sitting on the brown L shaped couch, her feet above the footstool. In front of her, resonating in the TV was an episode of 'Downtown Abbey'.
"Hey!" She said muting the episode and turning to him as soon as she noticed his presence. "Welcome home! How was school?"
His mom, Dolores Merrick, was a woman with dyed dark blonde hair whose roots where sometimes still visible, she was almost the same height as Audrey, she had brown eyes and worked at a bakery for a living. No one made desserts quite like her and she had gotten a well-earned fame for it.
"As good as usual" Jonathan claimed with a groan sinking in the couch by her side. "Where is mother?"
"She went to buy something for that car she is fixing, she should probably be back in a few minutes" Dolores Merrick claimed. "We will probably have dinner when she gets here"
"And what if I'm hungry now"
"I would be surprised you legally changed your name since you are still a minor, but do what you want. I'll still call you my little Jo-jo"
Jonathan groaned, and Dolores let out a heartfelt laugh moving her feet from the footstool to throw them over her teenage son.
"Do you mind?" He questioned raising an eyebrow.
"I am comfortable" Dolores shrugged unpausing the episode "I need to take advantage of this before your mother comes and scolds me for putting my feet on the furniture"
"You do know she can't ever be mad at you, don't you? It would be weird if I knew her better"
"I know, that doesn't mean I like seeing her upset. Like you and Valerie" Jonathan blushed furiously, pushing Dolores' feet off of him the woman laughed loudly.
"Shut up" Jonathan mumbled keeping his eyes on the muted TV. The woman's smile remained on her face as she allowed the show to continue.
The living room had a brown L shaped couch in the middle a small footstool and a coffee table a few meters in front, at the front there was a TV and a Xbox 360 that been given to Jonathan during Christmas a couple years back. The rooms were painted a light blue and chimney was white, pictures were above it and every year, Jonathan had to make sure to remove the embarrassing ones every time there was someone visiting their house. A couple of the photos were of his mothers. There was a chair at the side of the coffee table and, a dark green bean bag that was kept besides the TV and Jonathan only moved it when he wanted to play videogames. Besides the couch, and next to the chair there was a tall lamp, a painting that Dolores claimed they had bought from an artist on the street hung int back above a table and in between two bookshelves.
Jonathan had read all of them at least once.
The episode he and Dolores were watching was close to finish when the door opened and inside walked Su-Wei Lin, holding a box between her hands. Dolores lifted herself from the couch almost instantly and rushed to her. Jonathan watched her almost leap on her way to the doorway and then greet the Taiwanese woman with a quick kiss on the lips.
"Did you find what you were looking for?" Dolores questioned, Su-Wei smiled and nodded, now that they were standing side to side the difference amongst the two of them although not big, was still noticeable with Dolores being the tallest one. Jonathan was still taller than both of them.
"I did, and thank heaven, because I wouldn't want to have to go to London again just for one piece"
"Or we could have used the opportunity to have a little family vacations"
"Speaking of family" Su-Wei's voice resonated "Where is Jonathan? Is he back from practice yet?"
"I'm here" Jonathan's voice came louder than he expected, the woman peaked her head into the living room.
"I'm going to warm up the food. When I call you, I want you to come, understood?" The woman said, Jonathan nodded she gave him a quick kiss on the forehead. "And take a shower"
The first thing the teenager did was walk to his bedroom, jumping out of the couch. Once he got there, he was still able to hear his mother's laughter resonating all the way to his bedroom.
His bedroom didn't consist of anything overly exceptional, there were posters on his walls from bands that went from Queen to Five Seconds of Summers; Michael Jackson was also there carefully hanging between Slash and Ed Sheeran, there was a desk placed on the side of the window so rain wouldn't touch it if he ever left the window open on accident. His closed was perfectly organized, he had a small vanity that he could never let be as carefully arranged as the closed, he had a trash can in between the bed and the desk; the bed was placed there so the morning sunlight wouldn't hit him. The walls were painted mint and the wooden door was kept closed most of the time, on the door there were various hooks where he hung whatever he wore to warm himself, it was placed after he had forgotten his raincoat a little too many times. He had his laptop on the desk next to a printer, in the vanity he had a picture of him and both his mothers, in a goofier version of the picture that was left for exhibition on the living room, in the desk, there were also two pictures of him with his grandparents and lastly one with friends from his class. He kept a picture of him and Valerie taken on a booth she had convinced him to get into hanging in the mirror of the vanity.
Opening his closet, he took a pair of shorts and a dark blue shirt with a pun about math.
He tried to take a short time on the shower. His mom constantly complained about the fact that he took a long time every time he took a shower. His mother would simply shrug it off and say that when he was a child, he cried every time he took a bath because he refused to leave the water.
When he was done taking a shower, he walked downstairs, hair still wet, dragging his bare feet over the floor. The plate was already served on the table, Jonathan took a seat mumbling a quick thank you.
He stared at the plate of beef noodle soup, the table was made for no more than six people, so Dolores, usually sat at the top, with Jonathan and Su-Wei at each side.
While the meals they took in family were hardly ever quiet, they also weren't particularly loud, sometimes, Dolores would talk about a particularly difficult costumer who wanted an impossible or extremely specific cake and she had to make mental math so she could fit all of the requests.
"Wouldn't it be nice to invite Moira and that guy that now lives with her? Jonathan, what is his name?"
Jonathan's eyes left the bite of food he was about to eat and stared at Dolores with eyes wide. He froze for a second blinking a couple times, both women were staring at him, waiting for an answer. For a second, Jonathan wished his mother was talking about her job, recently she hardly ever talked about it, or Dolores made sure to change the topic whenever it came out
"I don't think that would be the best idea" Jonathan interjected; Su-Wei raised an eyebrow at him. "Merlin is a very complicated person" even with the choice of words, it would probably be an understatement.
"Merlin is quite the unusual name" Su-Wei muttered.
"I think it's important to give him a warm welcome to the neighborhood" Dolores began, taking Su-Wei's free hand between her own, "I'm glad Moira has gotten herself someone to keep her company. Everyone needs a friend sometimes, and a roommate truly does cheapen the expenses, do you know how they met each other?"
Jonathan tilted his head furrowing his eyebrows thinking they overestimated how much he meddled in Morgana's life when he went to Valerie's house.
"Who knows. That Merlin guy is probably just shy. Maybe I could bake them brownies, remember those I made when Robert and Mariana moved?" Dolores pointed at Su-Wei, as if the light of realization had hit her.
"They were really good" her partner nodded. "I still remember how nice they both were, and Mariana did prepare some delicious food and desserts"
"We might as well go tomorrow, if they have the time"
"It's only been a couple of weeks mom since Merlin arrived, and trust me, he is not particularly friendly, or fond of people for that matter" Jonathan rolled his eyes trying whatever he could to avoid any interaction between her family and Merlin.
"I still think it would be nice to see her" Su-Wei added. "Remember I have to take the car to the buyer tomorrow early, so let me know when you plan to go and we go together. It would be quite rude if you were the only one to go. We should also invite Moira out sometime, it's been almost a year since the three of us hung out"
Dolores switched the conversation topic, something Jonathan was grateful for. That day it was his turn to do the dishes, and once he was done, he went to his bedroom, the sound of an old movie in the TV slowly fading with every step he took. Once he was inside, he was able to hear the drops of rain falling outside, he opened the window just enough so the smell of rain would enter and laid on his bed, phone in between his hands.
'Hey Ree, are you, Morgana and Merlin free tomorrow, my moms want to have dinner with the three of you'
He left the phone over his stomach, until he felt it vibrate, followed by the sound of a bell.
Reemajesty: what? Mate, that's... I haven't talked to Merlin for a couple days. I could ask Morgana, though. Don't you have training with them in the morning?
I'm supposed to hang out with Audrey on the morning, tho.
So, no promises, I will ask anyways.
Jonathan typed a quick response before beginning to search for something to watch.
-.-.-.-.-
When Jonathan thought of Saturday mornings, he related them to waking up late, or just barely early enough to arrive to a game almost dragging his half-asleep eyes and listening to his coach scream at him for not taking soccer "seriously enough". Which was truth, he had only signed up for it due to Dolores' insistence he needed to do some sport to be healthy and he ended up stuck there. Now, his Saturday morning was made stark by yet another man frustrated at him for doing something wrong.
Merlin had decided the best way to spend a Saturday morning was to dedicate it to seeking knowledge, and Morgana had decided to tag along because Audrey and Valerie wanted to go out together now that Audrey finally had some free time from ballet practice. Given the chance, he would have gladly pleaded them to be included in their bff's hangout.
Right now, he was envious of Gabriel and how he was probably still snoring in bed. Wanker.
"I don't understand you" Merlin said groaning, both hands wide open in front of him, eyes looking the boy up and down "Morgana told me what you did at your school. Then how come is it that you just can't create a simple shield. I'm not asking you to begin telling me divinations of the future or change the weather or boil a river, I'm not asking you to summon an old spirit. Just a simple shield. Or make a flower bloom, that also is pretty easy, or it should be"
"Leave the poor kid alone Merlin" Morgana said, standing next Jonathan, ruffling his hair despite the fact he was a couple centimeters taller than her "Everyone struggles when they first discover their powers"
"I didn't"
"Well, that's because you are a weirdo Merlin"
"Look who's talking"
"We obviously won't make any progress today, I want to go home" Jonathan pleaded, interrupting their impromptu bickering.
"The reason why we haven't been making any progress is because the idiot over here doesn't quite comprehend the problem at hand"
"And you do?" Morgana raised an eyebrow, putting both hands in her waist.
"At least better than you" Merlin spat before rubbing the bridge of his nose
"Are you sure?" Morgana questioned "For starters, Jonathan is not you, and he is not me. The magic I sense from him is different than yours, and therefore, he probably needs a different learning approach. Second of all, you need to explore the scientific method"
"The what?" Merlin furrowed his eyebrows.
"Recreate the circumstances under which the incident happened, something like this"
When Morgana's blue eyes lit up, complete darkness surrounded Jonathan. He froze in his place trying to rub his palms to see if he could manage a light to come out of it to no avail. He mumbled curses under his breath.
Then, everything lit up and he found himself remaining in the middle of the woods, Morgana and Merlin were no longer around. A pair of hands went over his eyes.
"Who am I?" The voice had a fake deepness to it, he furrowed his eyebrows, taking the hands away holding it between his own before turning.
"Aren't you supposed to be with Audrey?" He questioned.
"She had to leave to eat with her family, and my aunt already told me where you would be, so instead of staying all alone at my house I thought it was better to see how were you doing" Valerie took her hand away from his, and leaned against a tree, standing still.
"Don't worry, you won't even notice I'm here" Valerie said
Jonathan nodded, standing still. There was a cracking sound, the previously still tree moved, its branches twisted like two long arms, when Valerie turned around the tree had turned into a knight, armor of wood and, but there was a dark air in him.
Valerie took the bracelet to draw the sword in it, but the knight managed to grab her arm preventing any further movement from the teen, his sword high ready to strike the deadly blow without giving the girl a chance to hold defend herself.
Upon his eyes realized Valerie was about to be attacked, his eyes glowed golden before a shield appeared in front of the offender, alongside a series of vines to stop any further movement, forcing the knight to remain still, the knight still held Valerie's hand tight. Jonathan walked to them, holding the knight's arms with his hands, his eyes shone and the knight hissed before letting go of the girl's hand.
When the illusion faded his eyes were caught by the sight of a statue made of dirt that turned into dust in the ground under the weight of the vines. His cheeks turned bright red when he saw the smug smile on Morgana and the exasperation in Merlin's face.
"We could have gotten a clever one. But no! We got him!" Merlin waved his arms pointing at the teenage boy "An Hormonal idiot"
"Wow Merlin you know the word hormonal, good for you"
"At least we know his trigger. He had to be a man, why do I have to be the only clever one, they are all the same, they all think with the..."
"The main one" Morgana interrupted "We know the main trigger of his magic, we need to find the rest and teach him to not be dependent on them"
Merlin sighed defeated, noticing Morgana's roll of the eyes when he placed himself apart from the rest of the men.
"Take your shoes off" Merlin turned to Jonathan, who frowned before slowly removing the pair of converses off his feet, afterwards, he removed the socks with the small spaceships, the grass felt ticklish on the plants of his feet.
"I need you to close your eyes, boy" Merlin spat, Jonathan rolled his eyes following his orders.
"Do you know what magic is, Jonathan?" Morgana's voice was the one to come up afterwards, her tone was sweeter compared to Merlin's usual severity, Jonathan stood up straight, tapping the side of his thigh with his fingers.
"A source of power?" He hesitated, furrowing his eyebrows and raising his shoulders.
"Wrong" Merlin sentenced, Jonathan then felt two hands on his shoulders "Magic is an extension of nature, it lives, it breathes, and sometimes nature is kind enough to lend the magic to a few of us so we can use it. Do you understand?"
Jonathan nodded quickly.
"Good. Now I need you to feel the grass under your feet, and the dirt underneath it"
"Without looking use the magic in you to find the apple seed I put somewhere in the ground and make it a tree"
"That was... an attempt" Merlin sighed, his voice coming out disappointed
"It was pretty good Jonathan" Morgana cheered, he smiled in gratitude.
"Now Follow me. Eyes closed" Merlin commanded, Jonathan was able to hear his steps walking far away from him as he stepped on fallen branches or rocks.
"Great idea, I'm in the middle of some woods with my eyes closed and I have to follow you, what could possibly go wrong?" Jonathan said out loud to make sure the older man could hear him.
"Your issue, not mine" His voice was further away, Jonathan groaned.
He felt a hand over his shoulder, it was a simple pat, he assumed it was Morgana. Jonathan took a deep breath surrendering, if he opened his eyes he would have had to deal with Merlin scolding him about the importance of following the lesson down to every single point.
Jonathan hesitated to give the first step forward, cursing when he felt the sharpness of a pebble sticking on the sole of his right foot. Jonathan took a deep breath wondering if maybe, he screamed loud enough he would be capable of using echolocation to find Merlin and Morgana. It shouldn't be possible, but he was willing to consider any possibility, Merlin could have transported him to an abandoned cave in Scotland. He continued to walk forward, until his hands touched the trunk of a tree, then he took a turn to the right. Since the incident with the pebble, his feet touched nothing but the grass and the dirt as if the ground had suddenly cleaned.
It was hard to keep track of the time with his eyes closed, but after a while, it felt like if he had been walking for hours. He sighed, leaning against a rock, sinking until he was sitting on the ground. He resolved that if he took long enough, maybe at least Morgana would take mercy on him and look for him, he didn't rely too much on the belief that Merlin wouldn't let him die alone in the woods.
Touch the ground, tell the sky and the water what you're looking for
The voice that resonated within him was faint and almost had a melodic ring to it. Jonathan's breath got on his throat, his heart taking a leap on his chest. Careful, he got down, until both his palms touched the grass, there was a brief gush of wind, and he questioned Merlin's whereabouts.
His eye remained completely closed, yet, it was almost as if he could see path laid down in front of him just to take him to his destination. Jonathan smiled proud of himself, making a mental note to thank Morgana for the help she had given him.
This time, the road was significantly slower. He could hear the water running,
"You took your time" Merlin said, voice dripping with mocked indifference, Jonathan leaned against a tree nearby.
"Be glad I made it here" Jonathan spat back. "Had it not been for a miracle I could have died.
"I was about to look for you" Morgana admitted, Jonathan didn't need to look to know the kind of look Merlin had shot her way. "Don't be a crosspatch Emr...Merlin, you were also worried about the boy"
"Keep walking ahead of you" Merlin commanded Jonathan, interrupting quick before Jonathan could have any possible question about the hesitance in Morgana's voice when talking to the older man.
Jonathan obeyed, until his feet touched the water, it was cold, and he regretted not pulling up his pants so they wouldn't end up wet.
"Now your feet have touched water" Merlin commented, Jonathan remained quiet "There is more than we know about water, so much depth and so much beyond. Not even the strongest can survive on it for too long. In my time, people used to say it served as a portal between our world and many others. Feel it passing through you, feel every bit of magic that has ever touched it touch your feet, think about all of those who have wandered into it, think..."
At some point Merlin's words felt like if they were told from another room, far away from where Jonathan was. The teen took a deep breath, the water felt like if it was crawling through him, yet not a single part of his fabric or him had gotten wet. He began to feel a bunch of small strings taking turns in pulling at him, once they were done, there was a moment of calmness until he felt a shockwave run through him, snapping his eyes open.
Jonathan's eyes were glowing a bright golden color, and then the soft waves at his feet suddenly stopped and where pushed away until his feet were standing on dry ground. With a movement of his hands the water passed above him and Merlin like an arc before the illusion disappeared. Merlin and Jonathan were now in front of Morgana, while Jonathan's eyes remained unchanged.
There was a new movement in the wind and trees grew around them. Reaching nearly as tall as the sky, Jonathan began muttering, the world around them grew quitter.
"What is he doing?" Morgana questioned, but not a single word came out of Merlin's mouth.
When his knees touched the ground his hands began drawing a circle that seemed to shone golden and almost blinding when looking at it from too close, Jonathan seemed unbothered by this. Merlin and Morgana looked at each other before he took the first steps towards the boy touching his shoulder.
"Young boy, I think..." but when Jonathan raised his head, Merlin was pushed backwards, Morgana being the one who stopped him from colliding against a tree.
Helping Merlin up, Morgana began muttering, her eyes glowing blue as she moved the plants to make Jonathan stand still, but as soon as they touched him, they froze and refused to obey Morgana's command.
"Jonathan!" Morgana screamed taking careful steps towards him. She leaned above him, careful enough so he wouldn't notice her presence noticing the clear view of a castle as see from above. She furrowed her eyebrows, unable to identify the place
"Jonathan stop this nonsense!" Merlin stood next to Morgana before moving to the side. Morgana kept trying to talk sense into him while he moved with certain steps towards the front of the boy.
"Jonathan Merrick. This is enough!" Morgana continued to try, using her own magic to hold the boy's hands back.
"Young man, listen to me. Stop this before you do something you might regret. Listen to me Jonathan. Stop this"
"Noah, I don't think you can reverse whatever you are doing once you complete it. So think this carefully" Jonathan's hands moved hesitant, the pace wasn't as certain as before and the mumbling was more dubious now.
"Jonathan" Merlin began, taking both of the boy's arms, stopping any further movement, "Listen to my voice, and think about everything you have ever held dear in your life, like a painting, understood?" While Morgana continued talking, Merlin began muttering something she was unable to fully understand, but once he was done, the boy's eyes were no longer golden and he felt backwards, Morgana being the one who stopped him from hitting the ground.
"What did you do?" Morgana questioned, as she watched the boy now carefully placed on the ground. She removed the hair from his forehead, he now looked peacefully asleep, unaware of what he was doing.
"I reminded him to think about everyone he loved, then told him a lullaby"
"A lullaby?"
"Someone taught it to me, a long time ago. Never thought it would be useful" Even as he spoke, Merlin's eyes remained on the boy whose chest rose and fell.
